DUDE! Watching this in April 2024 and you just saved my bacon! I've watched more hours of backup camera install videos than I'll ever admit and cut wires I had no business cutting and this is the ONLY video that ACTUALLY showed me which wire to tap into for power. Thank you SO MUCH! I thought I might have to call in the pros. Appreciate you!

Agreed, I just watched a bazillion videos that left me more unsure of what I was doing- now I’m back in the game

Finally somebody who actually shows what the heck you're supposed to do. Other people i've watched just assume that you know what to do just from watching them do it from a bad angle once and with no explanation as to how it works. Here you can clearly see everything. (Talking about the splicing part)

yes exactly. my instruction paper says just 4. Connect rear camera and thats hecking it. it doesnt even suggests to connect it to any wire

0:56 if you don’t have a multimeter and you can’t find the hot wire to connect to; just pull the parking bulb out and you will see 2 terminals inside the bulb socket. Connect camera wire directly to those terminals one at a time and see which one triggers the camera on screen.

What do you do with the negative wire off the back up camera monitor wire. I know you put the positive to the reverse light but where does negative go?

I would think the negative off the camera gets grounded to the vehicle directly. Pretty important step for them to leave out. :-/

The black wire right next to it is the ground. Im guessing the Sylvania camera grounds somewhere else in the system. You can use the black wire while you're there.

@@noligion I think any unpainted metal surface on the vehicle frame, with a bolt. Wrap the wire around the bolt and tighten it.

Great video! I have a Tacoma 2021. The rear camera not turning on when car in reverse. Can you do a video on how to diagnose problem. When I go to Settings on the display and look for Camera, the camera spot on display is greyed out.

from the reverse light i see get (+) posive for rear camare... and from where ger negative (-) ???

It’s usually the wire that is not black.

Am doing this now, it hasn't worked trying to ground the neg of reverse light housing, double checked my guide and It says it has to be negative chassis ground so hopefully it'll work tomorrow when I try that

They usually come with the camera I'm not a big fan of those unless the area is sealed off I'll usually use a shrink wrap tube 1st ill cut the wires and strip the end 1/4-1/2" on each wire slide them through the electric shrink tube 2nd I'll twist the wires together really good and slide the shrink tube over the twisted bare wires and heat the tube up using a heat gun or lighter holding the flame away from the tube 1-2" so it doesn't melt that way it stays insulated and water proof

My backup camera has only 4-pin connector and a red wire. If I am connecting the red wire to the reversing light my reverse lights go off. Head unit does not switch to reverse camera. otherwise camera works fine i can switch to it manually but that is not how it is supposed to work. When i am disconnecting backing camera from head unit and restart the car i do manage to get mu reverse lights back. Without red wire connection, only camera connected to head unit backing camera works fine just without automation.

Where does the ground wire go? And maybe dumb question, but how do i run the wire from the camera on the dash to the lights??

You need to do the same thing for the ground wire using another tap connector.

does anyone who watched this video know what is the name of the connector that connect the rear mirror wire to the backup light wire ? where I can buy it? Thanks very much in advance!

What if you want the cam to always be on

What if there is a split wire with a ground for the camera?

No ground wire?

Is this a weather resistant connector? Otherwise you are gonna have future electrical issues

Same problem after installing backup camera

Long story short, i got a dash cam with a back up camera feature, i got the power line for the reverse lights cut and when i splice the cameras back up wire to the reverse lights 12v line, the back up lights turn off and the backup cam turns on.

great video but this kind of splice is going to fault over time because very small contacct area. beter to cut the wire and make 3 way crimp or solder the joint.

Never use connectors like this. Always tap directly into the wire and soldier with heat shrink!

My revers light turns dole when in revers bud the cámara works fine only the side i spliced for the cámara

Apparently no auto electrician worth their salt would advise using the tap connector. Be sure to keep a fire extinguisher close by, by all accounts

Good video until you put the volt meter straight through the wire. That's a huge no-no. Then if you put a cut or hole in the wrong wire you'll have to fix it
