How to Spin : The Spin Entry

Спорт

In this video we are going over the very basic spin entry for your spins. Believe it or not, once you master this basic entry, you will be good to go on all your other spins. The entry is the same, its the position that is different!
Just please remember, DO NOT spin on your TOE PICK. Those are not for spinning.
I will be having other spin videos coming out soon as well so stay tuned for those.
In the comments below, tell me if you know what edge you are on during the entrance to your spin? :)

    Thanks you! I finally got my entry, i struggled so much and couldnt get around my edge. Turns out i just wasnt making my circle gradually tighter (cause no one ever told me thats how it is supposed to be done). I enjoy working on my spins so much now❤

    Thank you for the top angle! It seems to support my theory and self experiments: I slowed down several spinning videos and for some reason nobody mentions the heel/foot angle during the spin, i.e., as you demonstrated at 3:18 when your left foot enters the spin the ankle enters inside so the foot points away diagonally. Just tried it today and it fixed a lot of redundant "scratching" of the blade side, while beforehand even if I did my best to stay on the ball - it still felt a very stubborn turn. The angle of the ankle seems to control the amount of speed/scratchiness and radius, so the angle most likely should adjust according to different speeds and contexts (wide/slow spin vs fast/narrow). I believe this missing part is very significant and is the reason 2-footed spin doesn't magically get you to spin on one leg, unless we develop some different variation/instructions how to take that ankle/foot angle into account.

    Follow-up on my previous findings, figured out that when I bring my heel inside - the spin feels much cleaner because the spin is actually done on the outside edge, opposite to how I perceived the spin (meaning it's not a small "turn", so the technique is different). I suppose it's either on both edges or the outside edge, because doing it on the inside edge - digs the front part of the skate into the ice too much, creating a "bad" scratch with the side of the blade.

    @@DimaPavlenko This spin should be done on a back inside edge, not an outside edge. A spin on a back outside edge is done on the opposite foot with a forward inside 3-turn-esque entry.

    I am having the HARDEST time with scratch spin & this video reminds me of the entry that I am working on for that. I just cannot get over the awful feeling of putting my leg out in front of me while spinning & forget crossing it over! I badly want my leg close to my body. I cannot garner enough power going around that hook because it’s scary. So frustrating.

    Coach Shelly, Thank you for the Videos. I can now do Forward and Backward Single leg Spin Entrances because of your videos. I have been taking Figure Skating Classes in Japan and I sometimes do not understand the lessons because I am not good at Japanese. That is where your videos are really helpful. Anyway, for Forward Spin, should I be spinning on the Rocker/Ball on a FLAT (both edges) skate or on a BACK INSIDE EDGE? And for the Backward Spin, FLAT or BACK OUTSIDE EDGE? Thank you very much.

  • @ShellySkates

    @ShellySkates

    You should be slightly on the outside edge for both. It’s very slight. So it’s going to feel like your foot is more level on the ice.

    I really don't seem to get the spin going - it usually is one rubbish spin and skid ....fizzle out. Anything you can think of that comes to mind to help me get that spin really going. Am I not forward stroking strong enough into the curve? Not leaning enough into curve. The curve my coach draws out is half the size of what you have skated too.

    The department edge with the hold of the forward stroke position is key. Also ensure you have a good knee bend while doing that edge. Keep the core strong as well

    Hi! I would say for a beginner, start with the pivot. Once you get the pivot more comfortable then I would start trying this! This entry with the forward outside edge is how you will be doing your spins as you move onto more difficult spins :)
