How To Sow Lithops and Other Small Cacti & Succulent Seeds

Hi everyone,
In this video I share with you my method for sowing Lithops, Conophytum, Titanopsis and other small cacti & succulent seeds.
This method has been in development for about 2 years and is the result of lots of trial and error.
I am happy with the performance of this method and hope you find it helpful too.
This video is about the back story of the method and also the practical demonstrations, the next instalment will be focused on after care and include things like how much and when to water cacti & succulent seedlings.
Part 2 we will also take a look at the ideal conditions for the various stages of growth and also the ideal time to plant the different genus.
Growing cacti & succulents from seed is the most economical way of building a collection and is often the only way of acquiring certain plants.
I am very happy to also share with you one of my favourite seed vendors Oz Lithops.
Nearly all of the seedlings in this video are from Oz Lithops seeds.

Some of the smallest seed I have ever worked with was Crassula barklyi and other small Crassulas. It is like dust and can easily blow away if you are not careful.
Where this seed germination happened ? Inside greenhouse or outside ? If inside greenhouse what was the temperature ?

This looks like a very interesting way to sow Lithops. I tried before and I lost most of them but I'm willing to try your way with the tissue paper. Do you need to sterilize the soil before? Thanks!

I do not sterilise soil for lithops & other mesembs as they do not stay in the humid environment long enough for pests and diseases to become a problem. Good luck for your future sowing, would love to hear how they go..... Happy Gardening!
For those of us using takeaway-style grow methods in the house, would you see this working or is it the ongoing top watering that will help to dissolve the tissue?

Hello, The tissue will dissolve quite quickly regardless of watering method, it is very much a temporary barrier. I use tissue with the baggie method (similar to takeaway tek) and the tissue dissolves but just a bit more slowly. Thanks for watching & Happy Gardening!
Anytime I use perlite it grows algae over time. It's the worst. I have recently switched to pumice to avoid this. May I ask what the point of the tissue is? I have never seen this before. Does it help with damping off? Edited to add: I'm unable to find part 2, do you have a link?

Yes, algae can be a problem with perlite. This can be avoided by using a top dressing that is just gravel / stones. The purpose of the tissue is to provide a temporary barrier so seeds do not fall too deeply into the substrate. I use a mix very high in gravel so this causes quite deep pockets even if the surface is pressed down. Part 2 is still in production.... stay tuned. Thanks for watching & Happy Gardening!

In what condition do you keep the sown seeds?

High humidity for 4 weeks and then slowly introduce to normal conditons. Baby lithops require fairly strong light even when young or they stretch and don't grow properly. Happy Gardening!

Yes, Echeveria seed is very tiny! I don't even collect the seeds from my echeveria, just too much work. Thanks for watching & Happy Gardening!
