How To Sow Achillea / Yarrow / 7 Varieties I am Sowing This Year

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Today I am sowing 7 different varieties of Yarrow (Achillea). Achillea can be sown in late summer through the autumn, or, between February and May. I have had great success growing achillea in my heavy clay soil, but it is important not to overfeed your yarrow, otherwise it will become tall and floppy.
I hope this has been useful and interesting but do let me know if you have any questions.
It’s difficult to know how to express myself on social media when there is so much sorrow and devastation in the world we live in, particularly in Ukraine. My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Ukraine.

Apparently Yarrow goes floppy if the soil is more nutritious, it prefers poor soil. Just watched another yarrow video where this was mentioned. ❤ It was a video by the channel Epic Gardening if you are interested

Hi Sarah, yes, that is correct - I don't feed my yarrow and I try to encourage Richard not to mulch around them either. Epic Gardening is great!

That's great 👍. I love the white ones. And they are so useful in the garden and in cut flower arrangements. 💚

Its so easy to use too many seeds when they are so tiny. In my mind I think the smaller the seed the less likely it is to germinate but that isn't true.

Gorgeous colors!!! I have the species white and a pastel mix. I love them so much! Have you used yarrow for its medicinal benefits? I was going to dry my foliage and roots and flowers for tea this year 🫖

Hi Nicole, no, I haven't used it for medicinal purposes yet. Thanks for the suggestion...sounds interesting... 😁. I might well give it a go, although, I'm more of a coffee drinker! 😄

I planted the love parade yarrow this year, and I have a white and yellow yarrow around 2+ years old. The parade yarrow does not grow regular yarrow leaves, and im curious as to its medical properties. God is good, shalom family!

@@cottoverdi it might be a good idea to learn this stuff, because yarrow should not even be touched by pregnant women or children under 5. Very powerful. It got its name from the myth Achilles. Its a constricting, healing, antibiotic, antibacterial, antimicrobial, reduces inflammation, just an all around band aid of a plant.

I've read that hybrids often don't regrow true to their hybrid colors, but instead revert to the species color, which is off-white for all of the Millefolium varieties. When you've grown these colorful ones before, were they true to the original color the next year? Thank you fo your help and inspiration. (from Port Angeles, Washington, USA, on the Canadian border)

Hi Judith - so exciting to hear from someone in Washington state! Thank you. All mine come true each year but I have only ever sown from seed that I've purchased from reputable suppliers. I believe that if you collect your own seed, and then sow it, that this is when you may find the plant has reverted to its natural form. Hope this helps. 💚🌱

Thank you Annette. I have three types of yarrow. Don't ask me the names just now. I have the tall and strong yellow yarrow. I have a salmon coloured one, which fades quite quickly and a red one which the colour doesn't last. I mixed the three types together. That l believe was a mistake as the density of of the leaves on the salmon and red is not as robust and the yellow dominates. It is magnificent. Is it better to sow different colours in separate beds? And why do the Salmon and Red colours loose their colours comparitively quickly compared to the yellow 🤔🤗

Hi Penelope, it sounds like you have a great collection there. I believe the yellow achillea is one of the earliest to bloom so it could just be that it is taller first and so dominates in that sense. The other colours do fade as they age but I think this adds to their charm. Definitely try separating them if it suits your scheme better - they are super easy to propagate and I find they spread really easily in my garden. 💚😁🌿

I've grown most of them before, either from seed or plug plants, but not the Pearl - so I'm hoping for some success there, although germination looks very patchy at the moment. 💚🌸
