I truly believe that learning how the strings sound when strummed/plucked at different points SIGNIFICANTLY improved my overall tone and made my playing way more dynamic. Great tip!

@@cattocat4037 You can try raking your pick through your strings at different positions and at different intensities. Switch to your neck pick up, close your eyes and strum softly near the neck pickup and then continue to move up and down while changing up how hard you're strumming. See how the sound FEELS as you're moving. Then try it again with a different pickup. It's all about how the tone makes you feel. Is it warmer? Is it sharper? Then, translate it over to an actual song.

Couldn’t agree more , I’m happy I couldn’t afford pedals when I started off because it forces you to try to make the tone your going for with just an amp and a guitar , really helped me learn the instrument

Yep, the closer you play to the elliptical center of the string as it vibrates, depending on where it is fretted, you get these very warm, bell like round tones that are so pleasing to the ear.

Exactly!! Very true that he played up on the neck like that. He was actually a kind of R&B and Soul guitarist during the years that he was a hired gun for Ike and Tina Turner, The Isley Brothers , Curtis Knight, Little Richard etc . He played a lot of triad inverted chord structure and with melody. By the time he recorded with the Experience he was obviously injecting that Soul guitar playing chord style from the early 60s into what was becoming Psychedelic Rock. It seemed that it was mainly him doing that and that he was innovative in that way. Especially on 1983 A Merman I Shall Turn To Be and earlier stuff like Wind Cries Mary and Wait Till Tomorrow. Later on he got much darker with songs like ASTRO MAN, IN FROM THE STORM, ISABELLA..etc...which seemed to be an approach more evident on early albums by Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush and Robin Trower. New Rays Of The Rising Sun is a very dark Hendrix album. Some of the style and sound in the writing reminded me of Space Rock in the early 70s by bands like Guru Guru, Amon Duul II, Ash Ra Tempel, Gong, Hawkwind, and some guitar work on Popol Vuh

In my experiences, the placement of the right hand along the entire string length (nut to bridge) while either picking, plucking, strumming and/or finger picking, adds a distinctive woody sounding, emotional element to your tone. I've never figured out why a lot more players haven't taken advantage of it. Especially, while playing single coils into amps just on the edge of breakup. BTW, great playing!

You go on to play guitar better than anyone and you are a pivotal musician in the 1960's, changing music forever. 4.) You pass away September 18, 1970 after taking 9 Vesperax pills.
