How to sound like David Gilmour on a budget - Boss BD-2
Музыка
Is it possible to cover multiple David Gilmour tones with just one easily available non-boutique pedal? The Boss BD-2 is perhaps one of the most popular and versatile overdrive pedals on the market. In this video I'll demonstrate how you can set the pedal up with a tone that allows you to cover a lot of ground, by manipulating the guitar volum control.
In this video
Guitar: Fender Stratocaster CIJ 54/65 with D Allen Voodoo 69 neck and middle pickups and Seymour Duncan SSL5 bridge pickup
Amp - Laney Lionheart L20H, Laney LT212 cabinet with Celestion V30 speakers
Mic - Sennheiser e906 mic

I got 4 of them. Keeley, Waza Crap, Alchemy modded and stock. The Alchemy is on my board cause it has a good dirt sound at low gain. With 3 drives on my board, I tend to keep the gain low so the noise level is bearable. The Keeley and Waza are very clean with little gain. The stock is more noisy than I would ever believe. Also I got all these used and cheap compared to most prices I see on Ebay or Reverb.
What’s even more amazing is the smooth playing. Getting the Gilmour feel right.

Been using this pedal for 21 years and it’s been rock solid. For me as a family man, it’s a great time to be a guitarist with so much affordable, good sounding gear out there.
I gotta say when I stumbled upon your site and videos when I was painstakingly searching out everything Gilmour tone related, I felt like you were a godsend! Literally everything I’ve wanted to know you have documented and explained. Thank you for that. You are my Google for Gilmour lol. Your playing is amazing and I appreciate all you put out. Cheers!

@@BluesPre If you want your pedal to break, that is. That being said, it does sound great at 12v
What I do with my BD2 is I push the tone all the way up, but I turn the tone knob on my guitar all the way down. That way, all the high ends coming out are from the pedal and it doesn’t have any shrillness. Very rich and full! Gives me a very Santana-esque sound.
The only thing better than the gorgeous guitar tones is your playing. You do justice to any video about David Gilmour. Thanks. I might just buy a BD2 and the other pedals only because of your playing.

I've had my BOSS BD-2 for over 20 years. I haven't used it much lately, but after watching this I might have to dig it out. Remember, before there were boutique pedals EVERYBODY used BOSS, Ibanez or MXR etc. because that's all their was as far as mass produced effects pedals goes. I've become somewhat of a boutique pedal snob too, but I will never spend more than say $180.00 on any one pedal. There is too much good stuff out there at reasonable prices to pay much more than that...and I wont hesitate to buy used since I'm always on a budget. Anyway, Nice video Bjorn! Love your channel. A must for any Gilmour fan...

gilmourish riis Hey Bjorn, Thanks for the reply my friend. So last night I did in fact break out my old BD-2 for the first time in a while...and I really liked the results in getting a "budget Gilmour tone". Two things I did though which tones down some of the fizziness associated with a Blues Driver. First, here was my simple signal chain. American Standard Strat (Dimarzio Area Pickups)>Barber Tone Press Compressor>Boss BD-2>Xotic EP Booster>Reason Bambino Grande amplifier (20 Watt setting). The Tone Press running before the BD-2 and the EP Booster running after the BD-2 really seemed to tame some of that fizziness with the Blues Driver that you spoke of. I also kept the tone knob on the Blues Driver on only at 9:00. Anything higher it sounds a bit shrill and nasally. I didn't use any delay at all or a modulation pedal, but it was still good enough to capture a decent Gilmour overdrive sound similar to "Time" and "Money" from Dark Side of the Moon. So there you have it. My version of Gilmour on a budget. All 3 of the pedals used were VERY affordable... Cheers!
Great help. Cheers.
Congratulations. You've just convinced me to go out and buy this pedal

So beautifull i love
I finally got a chance to try out your tip and was really pleased with the results. BD2 to a Peavey Classic 30. Playing a Standard Telecaster. Nice 😀
The BD-2 is an awesome pedal. It is always on of my boards (or a close relative such as the Keeley super phat mod). I like it best for light overdrive but the high gain tones are also great and the touch sensitivity lets one play so nicely with the volume knob. Nice demo again Björn!

@franknguitars7671
5 жыл бұрын
I really don’t know since I have never played a Keeley modded BD-2. Compared to the stock BD-2 the SP is more smooth and gentle and far less noisy. I guess the Keeley mod also involves some component upgrades ... but zu am only guessing. Maybe somebody has first hand experience here?
It's just so versatile.
The second best part of this video is BD2's sound. The first best part is the musical skill to bring out all the minor licks or gilmour into a relative major scale.
Brilliant.
Thank you for this demo; it made me a believer that that awesome tone was achievable at an affordable price. I recently purchased one of the better (imho) BD2 clones. I am shocked at how good that pedal is. You can get that range of a slightly dirty boost to an almost fuzz sounding tone from one pedal. I’d been looking for a while now for an alternative pedal to the Powerboost, one that’s budget friendly and low volume/bedroom friendly. The Blues Driver, or any of it’s good clones, does an amazing job at nailing those awesome, glassy Powerboost tones from DSOTM or WYWH. It also can do the Tube Driver thing pretty well, too, and plays nice with both the classic silicon Fuzz Face and Big Muff. A must for Gilmour enthusiasts and guitarists in general.

Very nice .
I’m more of a fan of the Marshall Bluesbreaker pedal, but the BD-2 is a fantastic piece of kit, and well worth checking out for anybody who needs something below DS1/D+/Rat levels of gain.
Very nice looks like I'll have to do some shopping :-)
I've been following your shit since I was like 12 years old. I'm an adult now and I have always thought your channel and website were great. Instead of asking myself why you always reviewed expensive pedals I worked my ass off and bought a colorsound power boost and a fender twin. I figured out how to work them and I sound great now.
