How to Sound like a Turkey w/ Ray Eye | Ep. 111 | The Ozark Podcast

If you google 'Ray Eye'...it'll tell you that he is the most famous turkey hunter in the world! Despite his fame within the field, Ray is an extremely humble guy. To this day, he teaches turkey hunting tactics to the next generation with the singular goal of preserving one of the Ozarks most valuable resources...turkeys.
Oh! And he doesn't mind getting on a few birds himself.

I bought Ray's book and cassette tapes of him when I was learning to hunt turkey and they helped me immensely. When he told you guys to get away from the parking lot on public land that is obviously sound advice but I want to share the story of the only turkey my son ever killed. It was opening day of the youth season here in Missouri. We were on a 400 acre public property. I had roosted a tom in a line of trees 250 yards from the parking lot a week earlier. But he was not there that morning. Another father and son had walked past us, so when we heard gobbling in the direction they went we didn't want to go that way and risk ruining their hunt. We sat there trying to decide what to do next when a gobble came from about twenty yards from the parking lot! Two vehicles had parked right under him, and four hunters had walked past him, but there he was. I did a little soft tree calling and he gobbled right back. I was afraid late arriving hunters would scare him away, so I shook a hand towel to immitate the sound of a hen's wings and gave a fly down cackle. He gobbled and flew down into the access road we had walked in on and headed our way in a hurry. He gobbled as he came and when he came into view he was strutting spitting and drumming. Noah didn't shoot him as soon as I would have but when he pulled the trigger that tom dropped maybe 70 yards from the parking lot. I don't remember now what he weighed but he was so big I looked up the state record and he was just two pounds under it.
