    Professor Green Math thank you for a lengthy and incredible video/lecture on How to Solve Algebra Word Problems. In the beginning of this video, I found a majority of the Word Problems easy to solve, however in the middle of the video, some of the Word Problems are problematic. Toward the end of this video, I found the problems were simple to solve and understand from start to finish. This is an error free video/lecture on KZread. I will rewatch this video.

    Your videos are great, they really are, but for someone like me unfortunately (I have ADHD, among other things) I find it very hard to stay focused and even absorb the information when so much of it is repeated and repeated and repeated. 😢 For example; "let x= the unknown number. Once again, for completeness, let x = the unknown number. X is the unknown number.) Every two seconds and I am only 15 minutes into the video. I did understand it the first time, so much so that I am worried that's all that will be drilled into my headby the end of this though 😅❤❤ I know it's a me thing though it's just very hard to get through. However, since I love everything else so much, I think I'll keep coming back anyways 😂 just thought I'd share my experience.

    The set up for word problems just comes from lots and lots of practice. The problem types keep coming up over and over again. Each problem type has a very specific strategy. I have a video that follows this one in the playlist with lots more examples if you want to check that out. Otherwise you can search for "applications of linear equations" problems online and see what you find. If you work around 25 of each type of problem, you should a full understanding of the set up for each problem.

    In question about Steve and Larry, is it possible that you may have gotten wrong. I have got Larry 60, Steve 26 and Max as 45. I think that you may have divided 60 by 3 rather than x by three leading you to get 20 +9.

  • @Greenemath

    @Greenemath

    The answer in the video is fully correct. Larry is 60, Steve is 29, and Max is 42. This is checked at 58:50. Your answer given is wrong. You said that Larry is 60, Steve is 26, and Max is 45. Think about the first sentence in the word problem. It states that 9 years ago, Steve was 1/3 of Larry's current age. By your calculations Steve is (26 - 9 = 17 years old) 9 years ago and that is not 1/3 of Larry's current age, which you stated is 60. I think you are missing the "current age" part for Larry, not his age 9 years ago.

    @@Greenemath I have a question for you. So I got the following answer: m=36 s=26 l=51 According to the constraints, my solutions also works. For example, when I plugged in my solutions to my first equation (s-9=1/3l) 26-9=1/3(51) 17=1/3(51) 17=17 //True Now, the second equation (l-s=m-11). 51-26=36-11 25=36-11 25=25 // True Here is my work: s-9=1/3l l-s=m-11 1/3l+9+l+l-1/3l+9+11=131 2l+29=131 l=51 s-9=1/3(51) s=26 51-26=m-11 25=m-11 m=36 Now the weired part is that when I tested this for the third constraint, it does not add up to 131. 51+26+36=113 Not sure what I have done wrong.

    The difference between two odd numbers is also 2. So you need: x, x + 2, x + 4, so on and so forth. 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 are all 2 away from each other. In your modeling you are not finding the next odd number. If x was 1 let's say and you wanted x + 1, now you have 1 + 1 or 2. Think about it for a while and try to work the problem again.

    Is this also for 8th grade algebra?

    It could be used for anyone studying word problems. The grade level wouldn't matter too much. Some of the quadratic and probability stuff is more at the end of Algebra 1 or middle of Algebra 2.
