In this video I attempt to cram a lot of music theory and guitar theory into a span of about 20 minutes. The ultimate goal is to think differently about the fingerboard while you're soloing. I'm hoping the visuals help do a lot of the talking haha.
We start by talking about the hidden chords in the Pentatonic Scale and how to overlay them on top of the scale. The shapes are so transposable and usable that once you get the hang of it, your guitar solos will change forever and you'll get to be more specific.
Practice Method #1:
Just arpeggiate the shapes over the chord progression to get used to to the extra info in the pentatonic scale.
Practice Method #2:
End your phrases on notes that are part of the current chord. Keep it simple, maybe come up with a phrase that you know will end on a note thats part of the chord.
Practice Method #3:
If thats feeling easy, try to START and END phrases on notes that are part of the chord. You don't need to be perfect at it, its just about learning to be aware of the chord shapes.
Practice Method #4:
Very loosely just have fun with it. When you're on a note that is part of the chord, you can jump to another note thats part of the chord. This isn't a hard and fast music theory rule, but its a useful method of practice.

I basically never comment youtube videos, but I just wanted to say, that this is legit one of the most beneficial guitar channels on KZread, for me at least who is a beginner to music theory. Not only is the lesson really good, but the way you show the fretboard with the blue and orange dots and also fading your hands is actually genius. Keep it up!

Right?? I've been making music for years now and just didn't understand anything from these videos trying to explain scales and solving. For the solos in my songs which I recorded I'd just spend a couple minutes seeing which notes sound nice in the song and try to play them. But I watched his video on the pentatonic scale last week and since then I have learnt and understood so much. He just explains it simply, and straightforward. Even the best youtubers don't compare, because I always watch one of their videos and get overwhelmed and then forget about it.

You’re a genius. You literally just unlocked the pentatonics for me. For those wondering how to do the conversions, here’s a graphical tip: draw the major pentatonic shape you want to practice on, and starting from the root label each note with a sequential number (the major pentatonic goes 1-2-3-5-6, then it cycles). You’ll start to notice funny stuff: each note (or number, if you will) forms one of the 5 CAGED shapes, and by knowing this you can start to apply conversions, so that you can “shift” your thought to a different form, by still playing in the same shape!! Example: C shape - roots on 2nd and 5th strings A shape - roots on 5th and 3rd strings G shape - roots on 3rd, 1st, 6th strings E shape - roots on 1st, 6th, 4th strings D shape - roots on 4th, 2nd strings In standard tuning, these are all the possible shapes that can occur on the guitar. Notice how they chain together nicely. Now, let’s say you want to practice the G shape of the major pentatonic over a I-ii chord progression, like in the video. If you draw the scale diagram with the numbers labeled, you’ll see that: - the 1s form the G shape (as expected) - the 2s form the A shape - the 3s form the C shape - the 5s form the D shape - the 6s form the E shape Notice a pattern here? Now, when the ii chord comes, move your thought from the G shape to the A shape (1->2). This will allow you to quickly identify the root notes of the chord playing in the backing track, and you’ll notice that starting and ending your licks on those notes kicks some serious ass. If you were practicing a I-V progression, for example, you’ll start thinking in the D shape instead, following the conversion above. Now, as for finding the other two notes of the triad, I recommend experimenting yourself a little. Personally I reason in intervals, finding the third and the fifth based on where my root notes are, but whatever works for you is good. The brain is amazing at adapting to patterns, so just stick in there and eventually you’ll fingers will know where to go without you thinking about it. You’ll notice that you might need to go outside the pentatonic and borrow notes from the major scale (like SPJ said in the video): the G major pentatonic is missing the C note (4th) for instance, which is part of the A minor chord (A-C-E).

Scott, like the previous comment...I also don't comment much on KZread. A sax player growing up, I just RECENTLY took up guitar. I've been playing for a couple years and moving into lead playing and improvisation. As a sax player, understanding the fretboard has been my biggest hurtle. I used to short circuit trying to tackle it. But as I progressed, I had a "feel for the pentatonic scales" and could improv fairly well, but mostly by ear. I'm an art director as my main job, so visual training is how I understand things better. In fact when I set out to learn every note on the fretboard, I ended up making my own layered Photoshop file so I could see it clearly for myself. Your combination of concise scripts and amazing visual aids... well its just opened the flood gates for me. I can SEE it now... THANK YOU for spending all that time. I sincerely LOVE your teaching style.... and I am so glad I found your channel. Thanks again Scott.

CAGED lesson was an epiphany for me. It will make a Lot of people better if ya ask me, because understanding it seems to be the real trick behind pentatonic application. It also helps for use with capo, which is limiting to many guitarists but it seemed like that would be very useful in unlocking many more potential jamming efforts.

I'm no expert but I think its the same way. you just find the chord shapes. Notice the d shape lines up with the E shape pentatonic scale that follows the G scale (caged system). Alot of blues licks slide into that area. CCR's Green river for example.

This is fantastic, how do i now figure out where the right notes are in other pentatonic shapes? For example what notes make the 1 chord in the A shape. Maybe an article on your site explaining how to work them out ourselves it will make good practice for learning the notes Ps any tips for memorizing the notes of the fretboard? By the way these lessons changed my world man

@@TPintad Try to run your fingers on one pentatonic like E-Minor ten times up and down, and then jump out of one note (make a half-tone error on one note) you will see the sound is bad (not fit at all). That is your ear got trained to a perfect sound stream and it now knows how to detect the error. Of course, there is formula to determine then next note in a pentatonic scale, but don't use formula during your play (too slow to think through the formula). It's your ear and your practice will make perfect after time. I don't remember when I picked it up, but now I know right away when I make one note off its tone. Hope it helps. :)

  • @rklewis2

"Sloppiness is what makes music awesome." There are a whole lot of guitar players that can whiz through three note per string diatonic scales, and they just...never make a mistake. For me, personally, I find that kind of boring. Technically, they're doing what they're supposed to be doing, and I appreciate it, but it almost sounds...mechanical. Much of pop music sounds like it's computer generated. Even so much of the vocals are fixed in the studio. Not so much because the vocalist can't sing the song, but to save money on studio time, eliminating multiple takes. Music, to me, is an organic, human experience. Sloppiness, or the chance for a mistake, can add a dimension of tension to it, and makes it more interesting for me to listen to. It's why I enjoy live recordings and music so much. The artists and bands are walking a tightrope for you, where a mistake can happen at any time. On the technical and theoretical end, I know or understand everything you're saying. However, you've presented it in a way I never thought of before, thus you've helped me out a great deal. Your groovy R&B leads over the chords have opened my eyes on starting and ending notes. You've given me what I consider to be THE missing piece in my own lead playing, which is to become more melodic using notes from the chord shapes within the scale. I'm going to start working on this one, right away. Thanks again.
