    I'm just learning to snorkel, about 3 weeks now, mainly because I'm going to Jamaica from the end of June to the beginning of August, so decided that I might as well learn how to snorkel in order to view under the sea whilst enjoying swimming as well. So far I'm enjoying it but now I know I prefer the ultra dry snorkel than the one I'm using so I'll be getting one before my holidays. I just haven't mastered blowing the water out when it gets in, but I guess with practice I'll get better. Maybe one day who knows I might have the courage to enter the cold British sea to snorkel in but for now I'll continue in the pool or warmer climates🌞.I'm 63 and I'm just now learning to snorkel don't know why I never thought of it before, but as the saying goes " better late than never".🇬🇧🇯🇲

    I recommend some seac shout fins off amazon for budget options. They are a great place to start and being freediving fins they will give you a lot more power from your finning stroke. Mask should just be whatever fits your face best. But avoid the full face alien helmet ones like they have covid, they are terrible. Snorkel - the more simple the better, just a straight J tube. Never dive with your snorkel in your mouth, always take it out your mouth as you begin the dive. Wetsuit, any well known brand, but just make sure you pick the one with the best fit. Gloves, socks and hood recommended. It also protects you from jellyfish, there are a lot of them about. If you plan to dive down below the surface a weight belt and a few kgs of lead will help you massively to offset the buoyancy of the wetsuit. Always make sure you have a surface marker buoy or a spearfishing/swimming float to alert boat users to your location. You don't want to get hit by a jet ski. Also you NEED a diving knife at all times, if you get caught in fishing line/rope/your own float line you must have a way to cut it. Ps, either vaseline or shave your top lip to help mask seal. Great video mate, a very good jumping off point for people new to it. There is so much to see out there eh! I need to catch up with you and take you for a spearfish one day soon.

    Thanks for all this mate. I could’ve done with this script for the video 😆. All great tips though. I went out with my weight belt today and it was so much easier but I don’t tend to use it too often as if I’m hiking with camera gear and snorkel gear I try to keep the weight down a little bit if I’m parking up at a beach I tend to use the belt quite often. Yea give me a shout if you fancy a dive mate 👍

    A lot of good advice. Thank you. I seldom snorkel but when I do, like on vacation, I love it. I use the half divided mask. My most important issue is that the mask must not get foggy :) It is so irritating if I have to rinse it all the time when I am in the water.

  • @LoveSundays

    Thanks Torunn. I normally run a little bit of saliva on the mask to stop it steaming up that tends to do the job for me. You can also use toothpaste to rub on the inside of the mask but I have found this makes my eyes water so I stick to saliva 👍

    Very good video shaun you explained everything very well the full face masks are a big no. I use a 4-3suit until November then full 5mm until April. I tend to use a cressi mask and snorkel and cressi full foot fins. I only use a surface marker bouy if there is boat traffic about. One other item i find a big must is a weight belt makes diving down a lot easier and gives you more time on the bottom. Thanks again for another great video. 👍

  • @LoveSundays

    @LoveSundays

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yes I’m the same with the float. If there’s no traffic I don’t really see the point. Yes I agree weight belts are great I went out for a quick dive this morning and used my weight belt but only really use it when I’m parked near by. When I’m carrying camera gear and snorkel gear the weight belt is a item I would normally leave behind but a must when I’m just popping out. Glad you enjoyed the video Nigel. Great video. I snorkel in the north east of Scotland where I need a 5mm wetsuit even in the summer. I use a low volume Mares viper mask and a basic snorkel with no valves. My issue is how much weight to use on my belt. A 5 mm wetsuit is like swimming whilst wearing a life jacket. I’ve used 4kg last year which wasn’t nearly enough. I’ve added a further 2kg but haven’t tested this so far. The question is how do you now the ideal weight other than trial and error. The fear is you’ll add too much and sink to the bottom 😂

  • @LoveSundays

    @LoveSundays

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi Gary, they say you should use 1kg per 1mm of thickness of your suit. I used to only have 3kg on my weight belt but like you felt it wasn’t enough. So then I added an extra 2kg and it works much better now. I suppose it is a little trial and error unfortunately but maybe just test it in a calm environment. Hope this helps 👍

    I use a cressi action mask. Tried the full face but got out of breath. I also don't like how you cannot remove a full face quick or pop it off your face and rest it on your forehead so I prefer a traditional mask. Snorkel I use a typhoon one, wife has a cressi. Fins we got elcheapo open foot TwoBareFeet. Just got neoprene socks to wear as my feet get cold and stones inside. Looking at getting some full foot fins aswell. Also just bought our first wetsuits but 4/3. Learnt to wear a rash vest when I got frazzled in 2015 at lulworth cove,,very ouch. Going to start snorkeling from our new RTM midway kayaks (when i get my driving licence back when DVLA stop striking). Thinking of getting a dive flag bouy aswell to let boats know. Although it's more the yobs on jet skis you have to watch for.

    Looks like you’ve got a fantastic set up. I think we’ve all been there with the sunburn. It’s easy to forget that because you’re in cold water you can still burn 😆. We don’t have many jet ski yobs around Cornwall thankfully. It’s more people on yachts or small boats but I normally stay pretty close to the coast anyway so that’s why I don’t tend to take one.

    The full face mask you can see water in as you dive down, the one with valve is rubbish, the full face mask with marble valve etc is likely to give you a pounding headache if you snorkel for a long time because you will keep breathing in some of the air in the oral nasal in mask, that is full of CO2, it's that CO2 build up that gives you the pounding headache. Don't bother with snorkels with valves in they fail and give a gob full of water which is exactly what you don't want after after exhaling all your air to remove water. Bottom line is stick to a half mask and open snorkel no valves, tested and proven for 50yrs.. everything else is a gimmick.. .I would add that spend that little extra and get a good mask, if you have a good mask from day one your much more likely to have a good seal, good visibility and more likely to enjoy it and carry on the hobby....agree, good tip on staying relaxed.👍.....professional diver 30yrs and diver medic.

    @@LoveSundays potentially those cheap full face masks could give a good experience, if you got no water in, if you get no exhalation inhalation resistance they have all the hallmarks of potentially giving a good experience, BUT... you need to have complete proficiency with a half mask and know the proper mechanics of it all, only then will you be completely relaxed, and then would be the time to try cheap full face masks, because an experienced diver would make them work foibles and all, a novice won't.....99% of public wouldn't have a clue that there's a lot more to snorkel techniques than just putting a mask and snorkel on and breathing through it.
