How to Skimboard with East Coast Champion Johnny Weber: Learning The Monkey Drop

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Johnny Weber is one of the most entertaining skimboarders on the planet( @johnnywebergrills on IG). Growing up In Dewey Beach, Delaware, Johnny learned how to skimboard waves in an area where beaches are a bit flatter than those in California. He Learned how to drop his board using a technique called the Monkey Drop or Monkey Crawl. This technique has proven to be very beneficial for conditions in California as well. The Monkey Drop allows Johnny to drop his board in deeper water than the traditional skimboarding drop. Often times when John drops his board he is running in water that almost reaches his knees. When you are able to drop your board in deeper water that is further from the shoreline you are able to have a leg up on those who drop their board on sand or in a thing layer of water.

Blair is a freaking Cheetah running with his skim board out to a wave. That's one reason he's so good at Skim Boarding. He's also very light on his feet. He naturally glides on the surface really well (which relates to forward motion and technique). His speed of entry and lightness skimming puts him right where he wants on a wave. Then it's just pure skill in how he maneuvers on the wave. Lots of practice and muscle memory. People say you learn from your mistakes, but it's more about learning when you do something well. You go "Oh, that's how I need to do it" and remember to do that the next time. You learn from doing things correctly and remembering how you did it. That's how I learned to skate and surf. I just practiced and when I pulled off a trick I instantly put what I did into memory so I could do it again. Then it become habit and you move on to another maneuver.

I've seen you struggle in your other instructional videos conveying your instinctual motion and years of experience to others. In this age of instant gratification, folks miss the benefit of time spent on the beach and in the waves. So happy to see the young dogs being groomed and incorporated into the community. All the best and thanks for having us all along for the adventure.

This could be really handy in the UK. Lots of beaches that may have been good for skimming I've previously ruled out as the sand is so rough, mixed with stone and grit. This technique may help and so open up more spots. Thanks for sharing😀

Monkey dropping is great on east coast waves for getting more momentum and power into your turns since there isn't as much force in the wave itself. I cannot water drop worth a lick but I can monkey crawl and it saves my sessions on windy days. Great vid😎

When skimming and dropping do you throw your balance foot on first? Like I ride goofy for most things, mostly because growing up that was how I would ride a scooter but would I be better off riding switch (regular) on a skim?
