How to skim coat using paint roller trick- Getting rid of Knockdown Texture

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this skim coating video two part series I’ll show you how to do the first coat and second skim coats on a wall to get rid of an ugly poorly done knockdown texture. This how to skim coat trick is a great way for anyone from DIYers to contractors to apply a skim coat to drywall and plaster walls or ceilings. I’ll be using the paint roller method with a 1 1/4″ roller nap (cover) and I thinned down the all purpose joint compound with water. For skimming I’m using a 14″ drywall taping knife and mud pan to smooth out the mud that was applied. I highly recommend this skim coating with the paint roller trick to any contractors or even Do it Yourselfers for covering up an ugly texture, looking for a smoother finish on their drywall or plaster walls and ceilings, or even after removing wallpaper!
I think this how to skim coat trick saved me several hours of work by not having to take the extra time to try and keep the mud thickness as consistent as possible which means less sanding and mudding.
Tip: If you’re trying to cover up a knockdown or skip trowel texture, be sure to use at least a 1″ to 1 1/4″ roller cover when applying the first skim coat. Then a 3/4″ nap will work fine for the second skim coat of all purpose joint compound to the wall or ceiling or skim coating.

    You are a savior! The house we bought 10 years ago had all glossy white orange peal on every wall. 1500 sq ft. I have asked at lowes, home depot, and painters I know and no one could tell me how to fix it. I kept saying there is no way in hell I can ever match it if I punch a hole in the wall. I started doing this with thinned out d.w.c. and a 3 inch knife. Working on patches I could get to, since emptying a room we all live in was not practicle. With this technique I can most likely get a room done in a day and sanded, ready to paint in a weekend. I watched this with my jaw hanging thinking holy cow! that really worked!!Thanks again, really.

    Paul, I was watching a video where someone was using a hopper gun and I remembered something from 15 or 20 years ago. A contractor added paint to drywall compound. It was a slight gloss off white paint. The ceiling was already painted a light blue. The contractor then used a knock down knife on the texture. The two colors made an interesting ceiling. Just a idea for business.

  • @JohnGlen502
    @JohnGlen502 Жыл бұрын

    Thank you for posting this. It helped a lot. For the ceilings I found using a wide wallpaper brush worked well to apply in 3' by 3' sections from a plastic dish pan, then skimming before moving the ladder. The results are very favorable. With practice you get a feel for the blade. As a novice it would be hard to apply directly from the blade so getting it up there in the right consistency for what you need to fill is important. In one area I used a wide chisel to scrape off some very hard painted old texture so there wasn't so much to fill. Other tools were not sturdy enough.

    Hi Paul, I appreciate your knowledge and the videos you are sharing and I want to say thank you. I am working on rehabbing the kitchen of my house that belonged to my late grandparents. They had blue plastic tile on the walls. I have used your skim coating and it works awesome. When I removed the tiles from the interior wall the adhesive was dry, dark and hard. As I got to the wall near the stove, which is exterior wall, the adhesive was light colored, flexible, and I am able to peel parts off the wall. I have scraped the wall to get the most of the flexible adhesive off the wall that was loose. I am wondering why the adhesive is flexible after being on the wall since the 70's or earlier and is there anything I need to do to the wall/ adhesive before using the skim coating technique. My concern is if I skim coat the wall and put up 18" square tile backslash around stove area will the dry wall encapsulate the adhesive or will it pull away from the wall and ruin tile. Thank you in advance sir.

    Looks like he’s using ready mixed drywall compound (mud) . He should have at least hour before it would set up - maybe longer. So while still some wet in it he is dragging knife thru it. He’s pretty good with the knife and not leaving lines. If you leave a few lines I guess just do a bit of circular sanding and brush wall down (once mud dry) with damp cloth before painting (obviously leaving time for mud to dry - probably about a day or more ? Paul).

  • @codymoore1223

    @codymoore1223

    No. It is not necessary to sand before applying skim coat. Also he should tell you that it takes more than one coat. This will shrink back exposing the deeper pockets in the previous texture. Also after the next couple coats of compound the mud will have small bubbles from air escaping. Always a pain on paint!!!!

    I appreciate your professional video as well as your company name on your shirts.I'm in the restoration business here in Port St Lucie and handle and write estimates for water damage losses and submit to insurance companies. Anytime a drywall patch is needed or if walls are damaged or in need of texture in anyway I always list on the estimate to skim coat the walls, that way customers can not see the seams from a drywall patch etc, insurance companies gladly pay for the extra quality work.Before and after pictures sent to adjustors also help. Thanks Guys

    Thank you Bob! Yes I think having company shirts is a very important part of being professional. It also helps identify what company you're from on larger renovation projects. Agreed on the skim coat on entire wall when it comes to matching texture. Whenever I give an estimate on water damaged drywall repairs, I always give two options. #1 Repair drywall and skim coat the damaged wall or ceiling corner to corner to get a perfect texture match. #2 Repair damaged wall or ceiling and match the existing texture as best as possible. (with the disclaimer **I'm very good at matching texture,. But if you want it to be perfect the area will need to be skim coated and completely re-textured to get a seamless and unnoticeable repair). Appreciate your compliments Bob! Sounds like you're very good at what you do. Take care, -Paul

    Rather than all that sanding, you might try this. Spray, then wait about 1/2 hour or so. Take a trowel and lightly smooth it out. You will probably need a trigger sprayer bottle of water and mist it before you trowel. If it is not smooth enough, mist again and go over it with the trowel as many times as you need. It will save a lot of sanding later. If you trowel it once or twice, it will give the appearance of an old plaster wall. I have used this on plaster walls, and people can not tell where I have patched.

  • @PaulPeck

    Hi Lisa, The first skim coat probably needs about 8 to 12 hours to dry. What type of texture will you be going over? And is it a painted surface? The second skim coat usually dries a lot faster like 3-5 hours because the joint compound absorbs into the first skim coat and the second skim is not as thick. Hope that helps, -Paul

Then do any touch ups as needed. Wipe down and then prime with a good latex primer. I like using Zinsser 123 primer because it really seals the surface up nicely and the paint just glides on after priming with it. Let me know if you have anymore questions. Take care, -Paul

    Hey, Paul! Great videos! We have old plaster walls (with wire mesh lath, not wood) from which we removed tile. In addition to a few holes that need patching, there is still yellow-brown mastic dried onto the walls (and a little paper backing from the tiles). I've started to remove the mastic (heat/scraping--it's not water soluble), but it's VERY slow going and messy. Could I use your method right on top of the mastic once I repair the holes/knock off loose bits? The contractor who removed the tiles walked out on us and other contractors seem uninterested in taking over with the walls in their current condition. We will tile over one portion of the wall (kitchen backsplash over stove and maybe sink), but planned to smooth/paint the rest of it. Please advise if that changes your recommendation. (sorry if you've answered a mastic/plaster question already--I read through most of the comments and didn't see my particular question asked, but may have missed it!) Thanks!!

  • @PaulPeck

    @PaulPeck

    Jenn, Yes you could sand them. But it will take a lot of elbow grease. Especially if the walls were painted. If the skip trowel texture on the walls wasn't painted? You could just take a wet sponge and go over a small section at a time and scrape it off once the water loosens the texture up. Let me know you have any more questions. Take care, -Paul

Took a long time just to remove that old wallpaper, then spackling to repair where the wallpaper tore off chunks of drywall, not just the paper surface. Oh, scraper gouges. Paper cutting tool holes, nail holes, etc. Then sanding. Etc etc etc. This will be useful for kitchen.

    Hi Paul, many thanks for sharing your expertise and insights. Following up on an earlier commenter, I'm curious to know more about the process for spraying the mud in lieu of rolling. I have really heavy texture -- and by heavy, it's actually ceiling-style popcorn, not knocked down -- on the walls and would appreciate some guidance: (1) given that the texture is really heavy, is it even worth it to spray or should I start with a non-thinned out (or lightly thinned out) rolled-on base coat; (2) if I were to spray on the mud do I have to thin it out -- and, if so, what's a good ratio of water to a 5 gallon bucket of green top; (3) do you have any upcoming videos that might show the spray on process? Cheers!

    If I could add a suggestion for these tutorials. Watching you guys trowel the mud on the wall board is fine. What would really help me is explaining the wall board compound you selected and why. Which mud to use for the application. Skim, settlement, hole in the wall, corners repairs, new install, etc. The troweling part is a learned skillset. Hopefully the more you do it the better. Selecting the right type of mud I would think is the majority of a good and lasting job. Watching you guys trowel is wash, rinse, repeat.

    Hello and thank you for your video. I’m about to take the leap and start with my powder room... first timer. I’ve watched the video several times and feel confident, however I am unsure about the dust from the sand. How to I do this without it going through the house and my skin. I have allergies and skin sensitivities. I do I have a shop vac to clean and I thought of connecting it to my rotary sander, but . I was told to save rotary sander for the pros. Any advise would be helpful. My powder room is empty and I’m ready to go

    Hello! If I'm doing this in the bathroom where there's high gloss paint, do I need to sand down the wall first before adding the mud so it sticks? Thanks!!
