Whenever I try to ski down moguls, I get going way too fast and feel completely out of control. I'm going to try this technique and see if it helps.

Hi Steve, my question is, can you use this mostly-side-slipping technique even on nastier/bigger/cliffier bumps? It would be great to include a few more examples about what this survival skiing technique looks like on different types of bumps. I'm trying to picture this and imagining myself getting stuck in ruts or basically falling straight down the back of a larger bump and landing unpleasantly at the bottom of the bump. Maybe that is expected with this technique --- it's survival, not necessarily graceful --- but it would be great to see more examples because the bump at 4:51 is relatively small and friendly (gradually sloped) compared to the bumps of my nightmares!

This is a great question. The nastier the bumps get, the more I rely on this survival technique. Sometimes you can get several feet of drop from a badly rutted bump. In this case I side-slip, but have to really bend to catch myself so I don't go squirting out the trough. I'd put some nastier bump video in, but frankly, I don't have time to take video on the nastier ones, cause I'm busy fighting for my life :). But I have used this technique in very steep bumps with maybe as much as a 10 foot drop (of course even on these really nasty bumps, the top crown of the bump is a little rounded, so even though the drop of the slide is a good 10 feet, the vertical drop near the bottom is probably no more than 5 feet). I remember finding some really scary bumps and doing this, and being pleasantly surprised at how well it worked! But start by practicing on more manageable bumps. Once you get the idea of how it works, you can try it on bigger moguls.

@@SkierSteve great, thanks! I'm up at Palisades today and tomorrow, I expect there will be plenty of bumps to experiment with 🙂

Your lesson look great besides one issue- useless and annoying musical background. For some reason majority of instructional video add music which makes it difficult to listen to explanations. Maybe people think the video looks more professional or attractive but it is not.
