Hi Chinwendu. I'm Nigerian as well. I wanted to ask about how your journey in Industrial Design is going. Are you based in Nigeria? I am. I don't know what the job market is like for this field and that's why I'm asking. I just started a degree in Architecture but I've never really been interested in studying it. Would you say a degree is necessary to get a job?

To be a well rounded industrial designer, you need to be able to product quick "ideation sketches", which don't take much time, and can be pretty ugly. But once a direction is chosen, you should be able to do a more detailed rendering in photoshop, and potentially a basic 3D model. Nice drawings DO sell ideas though, so it's worth the time to keep improving.

These are the tools that we mostly need for our digital drawing assignments:) i think product design is more harder than regular art major, i'm not trying to scare u but this is the reality and no one warn me about this. but if you love to learn and this is what you wanted then it will be worth it i promise:) oh yeah and always seek for industrial inspo, it will be much help for ur creativity:) p.s we will be doing a lot of counting measures and scales on our drawing!

Hey Jimmy! Here's a shortcut to the problem @ 3:50 1) scan the page 2) loosely lasso each drawing and paste them into a new layer 3) since it's a white background you can multiple layers (no need to cut out the background) 4) organize layers as desired. Optional: you can use automation to export each layer to an individual .png with a transparent background.

Actually, I'm wondering if those various concepts were sketched on the same 'page' to begin with. As a mechanical design engineer, I often sketch several mechanism concepts or variations on the same page, and sometimes they overlap -- That approach helps my 'brainstorming' objectives. Also, I've seen industrial designers do the same on a single page, with overlap, etc. So, that may be more of an ideation 'page' example, not something that we would usually show to a client since it's too overwhelming and presenting too many choices to a client is not recommended. Thank you for the great content, though -- I love your channel!

Hi Jimmy! Love the video. One question, how much do the tools matter here? What I mean is, I really want to learn how to sketch like this, but what am I best off using to do it? Photoshop with a Wacom? A tablet with maybe an active fine-point stylus? Maybe I should really just get a stack of actual blank paper and a regular HB pencil and start that way? I especially like the look of the sketch of the umbrella crutch around 6:36, but I can't tell if this was actually done with pencil or if it's digital. Also, I've seen that some people do the effect like at 1:16 where they overshoot the lines a bit. Is there a purpose to this, or is it purely aesthetic?

The fluidity available with pencil sketching is rarely matched by the devices you mentioned. The tools like modelling and visualization softwares have utility only AFTER you have generated concepts. They can never be a substitute for the complex flow of thoughts you are deliberately thinking in order to generate ideas. They are not tools for designing. They are tools for representing and communicating design ideas.

And here I am, thinking about the best way to hold a pen. When drawing, do industrial designers: 1. Float their hand? 2. Touch the paper/wacom with only finger(s)? 3. Touch the paper/wacom with the entire underside of their palm? 4. Do they rest their elbow on the table? Etc. I'm having calluses on the tip of my fingers by practicing like mad but I'm still struggling between straight line/eclipse accuracy and control, and smudges, or fighting the edges of the paper.

For people that CAN draw well, you're already there. Art school with just two theories on perspective and color theory and you're good to go. The classes are for people who picked up drawing late and trying to make up the gap. It's just like music lessons or playing sports. If you've done it since u were a kid there's not much more school can teach. Now schools do need to make a little money but not take 4 years of my tuition money for something I can do already.

Back in 1989 my sketching would be about 20 to 30 percent. I would spend about 40 percent time trying concept modelling in plaster, wood, plastics, metals and even clay to assess aesthetics (proportions, radii, merging surfaces and overall form). Balance 30 to 40 percent time would go towards spray paint work, mockups and technical drawings. Back then we didn't have any 3d modelling and visualization softwares.

Hello, I am a new industrial designer who has been working for more than two years and is considering changing jobs. When I was preparing my portfolio, I was confused. The portfolio during my university time required more to show your design thinking ability, the production process, etc., and the rendering and final model were only a part of it. However, when I observe the portfolios of many professional designers, I find that they choose to include more beautiful renderings or videos, and the hand-drawn or production process will only be included in a few or not at all. And in my current job, I don't complete the whole project like I did in college, usually only responsible for a part of it. So when making a job-seeking design portfolio, which type of form should I follow?

Hi I study industrial design and have drawing classes. Drawing the product has to be fast, but you must have an amazing skill to do it. You don't actually draw it - you construct it on a paper with geometric shapes. Plus perspectives, grids, etc. It's about showing that you understand the form, not about adding some lines to a sketch

Hi Jimmy. Good u made a video on something really important like sketching. Tell me something, most ID sketches are either digital or made with markers and pens. Do you think just a pencil is a good idea for industrial design sketching? Is it just the form and style or medium of sketching also plays a role?

For me, the main goals is to convey the idea of the product to others. It's not the media that matters, but the situation and context of it. If the sketches is intended as main image for formal presentation bring the best you can digital and manual also can be combined and time still matters. But if you just want to take notes on the idea that flash in your head, a pen and napkin is adequate.

industrial designers should learn to make their designs in 3d so they can see just how bad some of their drawings translate when they arent heavily stylized with edge weights or fancy exaggerated rendering.

So you didn't explain how to sketch. You just emphasised that they can be basic. Also...removing the background from a scanned drawing, time consuming? In photoshop: blending options > blend if > this layer.....spread the whites with alt. Next layer.

He explains that you need to draw simplistically and create a drawing where it is easy to tell what the product is. You seem to be wanting a completely different set of videos, such as videos over how to actually draw. He doesn't touch on the basics because the main subject of a video is how to do things that are specifically like an industrial designer.

and don't forget about mockups... All these sketches on sketchbooks or notebooks are just some sketches put together (close to each other) and then layered on a mockup, so it looks like a professional photo of a sketchbook (wich in real life would not has this good quality if you don't have a really good camera) ;)
