How To Sketch A Shimmering Sea - A Sketchalong In Ink & Watercolour
Ойын-сауық
Hello Sketcher,
It's hard to think of a blank page as an essential part of a watercolour sketch. For example, many watercolourists struggle to leave highlights untouched.
But what if half the page were untouched, and left blank? That's how you depict light when it comes to watercolour paintings. By doing nothing! Well, not quite. The darker you make the object next to the highlight area, the more the light shimmers. It's like magic!
In this sketchalong tutorial I show you how I do exactly that during an afternoon's sketch session at the seashore near me. I have a beautiful new electric bike with a basket in front, that I got especially so that Reuben can come with me on sketching jaunts. He loves it: I have put a very luxurious dog bag inside the basket (it was a bit small),securely tied in, so he can hunker down with the zip closed over his bac k, with just his head peeking out, and feel the wind in his hair as we zoom along.
All members of my online sketching community have the sketch sent to them via email, starting today, 24th June 2024, so if you like to print something out, or look at a reference sketch on another device as you work, then be sure to join. Not to mention that you get access to nearly two hundred 90-minute classes when you sign up...covering every topic I could think of. Just go to my website and follow the steps. It costs €19.99 per month - for access to literally hundreds of classes, with more to come. I guarantee you a busy summer if you try to do them all!
I love your comments here on KZread. They mean a lot to me so please share your thoughts.
And happy sketching!

Love this piece Roisin - beautiful interpretation. I have a Rosemary & Co grass rake brush from their travel range. It can be very good for painting fine 'shimmers' on water. I love their travel brushes, I have eight of them but I definitely can't afford or justify buying their large travel squirrel mop you have there, currently around 43 quid a pop! 😬

Mine is the limited edition one and they’re all sold out so you’re safe. I would LOVE that one you mentioned. I was given the squirrel mop in recognition for the promotion I do but I’ve bought all the others (or been sent them as gifts by my very generous students). They’re brilliant!

Beautiful! Nice tips! I was just out sketching at the beach where we are vacationing on the Gulf of Mexico side of Florida. I grew up coming to this area as I was growing up because my Mother grew up here. So I had lots of cousins and aunts and uncles and grandparents in the area. It still tugs at my heart! Today I only sketched with 2 of my fude pens (Urban Grey and a blue) because carrying my watercolors and brushes and water along with chairs and towels etc over very squishy sand is rather difficult as you sink in with every step! I took reference photos and little light pencil notes for adding paint later. But I find your painting and tips were along the same wavelength of my thoughts as I sketched in glaring sun under our rented umbrella. Then and only then did I venture out into the surf which even though it was fairly gentle, it's doing a bit of tug under the feet. So we had to be very careful
