Advice for anyone concerned about falling over is to wear pads and a helmet. Coming from someone who snapped my wrist skating 6 months ago I now will not skate without my knee pads and wrist guards at the very least and if I'm trying something new I always wear my helmet. I can't explain how much more confident I feel wearing them. At first I didn't want to wear them because I thought I was going to look stupid but it wasn't until I snapped my wrist stepping onto concrete that I realised how much they can save you. Never again will I skate without my pads purely because of the confidence boost I get from wearing them. Hope this helps someone.

How do you overcome the fear of catching one of those little pebbles on the street or tripping over a crack in the cement? Especially backwards! I think it’s the “mental” part of it that hinders me sometimes

wrist guards + knee pads, stay low to the ground, and practice stopping on your toe stop when going backwards! if you fall, you fall forwards, so it's actually a lot easier to catch yourself. I feel you though, the mental part is really hard for me too!!

I know this is an older video, but I thought I would say that the explanations do help a lot. Like I can see how your supposed to move, but figuring out how to make my body do that just by watching someone else do it is not that easy for me. You do a great job of describing what is actually happening. I haven't been on skates since I was a teenager, I have some arriving this week. I can't wait to be comfortable enough just going forward to actually try going backwards. It will be amazing when I manage to be able to do something I always wanted to know how to do but never had anyone to show me when I was younger. I could move backwards but not really in a controlled way unless I had a friend to help direct me around the rink.

Been taking my son to the rink for years, and can do the basics, not too fast, or fancy, just going in circles. Watching people whom have better skill is both beautiful to watch and admire. I have come to the point where I am ready to start practicing and strengthening my muscles for this. This is a great place to start, Thank you. I am going to browse your videos because you have a gift!! The drill exercises are fantastic. Keep up with those, as repetition and muscle memory are most beneficial to me.
