how to size a solar power system for your home

in this video you will understand the different types of solar power systems, and you will be able to size your system based on practical numbers.
In this video I sized an off-grid system which is the more complex than on grid system sizing. So, you should have no difficulties sizing an on-grid system.

Whole-house systems usually use 48V nominal batteries in order to reduce current and thereby reduce resistive losses in wiring, or allow thinner and cheaper wires to be used. High voltage charge controllers similarly allow solar panels to be wired in series using longer strings, thereby reducing current and also reducing resistive losses. The latter is particularly important if your solar panels are not on a roof, but some way away in a field. Shame the text-to-speech converter can't pronounce "lead" properly.

One can have a 4th type of system as well. Create an off grid system to run 50% of the house load; lights, computer, radio, refrigerator, coffee maker. Use a bank of Generac generator transfer switches to engage the selected circuits to either the grid or the battery/inverter. One can install a plug on the end of a wire from the Inverter to a generator receptacle to power the transfer switch bank from either the battery powered inverter or a generator. Connect the solar panels to the batteries with a separate charge controller. Why go through the mess of using a grid tie inverter with the inspections, upgrades and contracts with power companies? One may not have to go completely off grid to save money and to have strategic emergency power in the house.

I may do that 4th here in the Philippines. Too many brown outs, like every day, and a typhoon? None for a month or longer. If I can afford it, I'm going completely off grid, but, if not, I will put lights and the exhaust fan in the kitchen on the grid, and in a separate panel, everything else

Thanks for the exciting presentation. Please what should the size or watts rating of the solar panel be if the solar panel simultaneously charges the battery and supplies power to the load inverter at the same time ?

Thanks dear. Panel array size depends on your requirements; that is in how many hours yiu wanna charge your batteries and how much load you wanna take directly from sun during sun hours. Lets say you wanna run an oven and refrigerator with some lamps. That should be around 2000 watts load. Your panels (assume 500 watt each), then you shall have at least 5 panels assuming 0.8 effieceincy. But also you wanna charge your batteries at the same time, so doubling the array size means you are taking 5000wattx0.8 approx 4000watts. Then you can consume 2000w and charge your batteries with 2000w. If your batteries are 200Ah 24V (4800w) you will be able to charge them within 4 hours.

Following you since long. I want to run 2, 50w fans and 6, 15w lights. My objective is to get 10 hours backup using 200 amps lead acid battery. Should I go for AC or DC system? I believe AC is much more lossy due to conversion losses . What do you say?

  • @AMJEngineering

Yes you are right, if you could use DC load directly you can save the conversion losses.

Hello, first of all great content. I have 36kw of solar panels, ground installation. It must be limited on 23kw cause that will be max grid will accept. I 'm in dillema of choosing inverter between 25kw SMA or some 30 or 33kw Huawei. I'm closer with SMA cause they are more premium brand but i have concern about power. They do not offer anything between 25 and 50.

Is there a software you can calculate for?

  • @henrivanbemmel

Frankly, you would be better to learn properly how all this works and write your own Excel spreadsheet. If not and the software is wrong or does not consider everything you come up short. Learn how to model the sun incidence on your panels based on the sun angle and time of day and the various efficiencies of the inverter and solar charge controllers etc. Doing this 'homework' yourself puts you in a great place of knowledge so you know what you are talking about and some contractor doesn't fool you. Remember, there lots of additional charges. Shipping, the heavy wires, utility boxes, breakers, large fuses, shut off switches, permits, etc. Gotta know it all and even then it'll probably cost more. If there are gov't incentives, you usually have to buy new as the gov't cares more about stimulating the economy than the environment. If you can sell electricity to your utility for a profit, that might stop after the best election unless your contract is airtight.

It depends on the solar hours in your area. You may not require batteries if you can fill during sun hours. I suggest to consult solar specialist.
