How to sing higher with more resonance - forward placement

From an ‘ng’ sound to an open vowel sound
First, find your ‘ng’ placement.
Back of your tongue and your soft palate come together. Say the word ‘Singing’
The ng at the end of that word (a digraph) sends the resonance into the ‘mask area of your head and face, releasing tension in the throat area (your Larynx)
You’re trying to create an effortless placement for the sound in and around your nasal cavity and mask area, giving you more forward placement and resonance.
Exercise:
On an ng sound sing up a scale to the fifth starting on a comfortable note and down to the tonic. Make sure that the tone and dynamic is constant all the way up to the last note.
Sing it again, but this time release on your top note into an open sound on an ‘Ah’ vowel. Make sure that you’re again open and relaxed in the throat ad that your sound is supported.
Try the exercise on different vowel sounds and gradually get higher in pitch (in semitones)
Keep the ng placement light and supported. This will keep the vocal folds thin and allow the resonance and energy to transfer from your chest into you head register.

I sincerely appreciate your detailed explanation. I never thought to try and “mock sing” while practicing this. It is extremely helpful in teaching muscle memory and proper coordination. It’s like learning to play piano with both hands instead of one at a time. It brings you closer-in and greatly assists in pre-singing confidence because you’re connecting the mouth shapes and actions to the correct placement beforehand. Thank you!

With the forward placement, wont more sound come out of the nose? My vowels change abit when pinching the nose with forward placement like this. I do however not sound nasal, but still as my voice sound nothing like a professional, i am obviously doing something wrong somewhere, so would appreciate an answer to wether i should still block ALL the air coming out the nose even with forward placement.❤

It’s a combination of keeping your Larynx flexible finding more back space, keeping the folds thin, and blending into your mixed voice. However, you might not beed or be able to find that note depending on your vocal range.

Another video about singing in the false mask. Yes the nose is the FALSE mark. The real mask in the forehead. Nasality is not good for proper singing. It results in a small constricted voice.

You cannot sing in the forehead…it’s through the nose or mouth

  • @marcelbureau2753

    @marcelbureau2753

You are absolutely right we cannot « place » the voice in the forehead. The voice comes from the larynx, the throat and the mouth. But with a good breath support and a good position of the tongue and the soft palate the voice automatically « goes » to the forehead especially when you sing above the passagio. You dont’t place it there, it goes there. There is so much sound in the mouth that the vibrations go up and are carried to the forehead. As a result the voice gets much bigger and carries much further. Nothing should ever go to the nose except for a split second for the consonants N, M and GN. Of course this is the old technique of singing when the singers did not use microphone. Nowadays singers can manage singing in the nose and producing a small constricted voice because they use microphones even in opera houses.

Listen to the student in this masterclass:kzread.info/dash/bejne/jH2WybypaMfFedY.htmlsi=aS7_Pm83xypRwoMS. He was trained to sing in the nose and hear the result. The voice is extremely nasal, small, pressed, pushed and squeezed. Jaroussky gives him all sorts of comments and advices but nothing about the nasality. He thinks it is perfectly fine. It is not. Maybe it adds resonance but it is bad resonance. In a small room with piano accompaniment it may seem loud but in a big hall with orchestra this kind of singing will carry only to the second row of seats. This student has a good voice and good potential but the voice is muted by singing in the nose. The voice is underdeveloped. It could be much stronger with much richer resonance if he had a proper technique.

@@marcelbureau2753 i barely sing with a mircophone(bonaok g50) lol and a blast the music to where i can hear it and just sing…but me having a smaller nose my sound will always be nasally sounding. But here’s the thing…i place my high notes forward and my low notes forward…the only time my high notes go backwards is if i fully do my head voice with complete resonance. I dont know how to keep my high notes backwards without muffling the sound a little.
