But there is such a thing a buying things what you need like food, replacing clothes or things. Best to have no debt, no car, no mortgage and at least some money in reserve. Plus medical insurance and paying taxes.

Before you buy: 1. Is that an impulse? 2. Why do you want to buy this? 3. Don’t you already have this? 4. Is that a need or a want? 5. Can you afford it? 6. Is it within your budget? 7. What are the intangible costs? 8. Does it bring value? 9. Is it just a trend? 10. Have you done your research? 11. Is it within the list? (usually for groceries) 12. Does buying sale items save money?

When I was young, while my father picked me up from school, used to buy groceries and vegetables on few days, and he always used to refuse the plastic bags to carry the stuff and used to load up what he bought in my backpack... A backpack can be really useful when you buy a lot of things and can be used to work and school too 😁

I think you can def find the balance through time. We are Farmers & don't shop regularly, prepping is important to us, not from a weird conspiracy theory place, it just makes sense, we grow about 80% of our food so recently have been prepping & buying up Canning & Preserving jars as we are really hoping for a good fruit harvest this season. Being in Australia we DEF buy toilet paper in bulk now, I never want to go through that again. I think prepping as a Farmer is very normal as you don't know how the harvest will go each year, its really important to prep for lean years, eg cut extra firewood, grow extra vegetables, preserve 1 extra jar of fruit. I think this attitude can definitely be applied to other lifestyles not just farming, eg plan for the predicted worldwide recession due to (the thing), what do you not want to run out of, what will most likely get more expensive..... you can get that stuff in quantity now, and still use sparingly & with respect, we are investing in ethical good quality farm clothes at the moment, yes we will buy extras & store them as we may not be able to afford them in 2 years, so its and environmental & financial choice, that's prepping, but they are items we need & will use & are a conscious choice. I also practise CK's Wishlist strategy, I even have a special notebook for it, if I want something that isn't a basic needs requirement I write it down in that month tab. I don't buy it for 12 months, then I review the following year, often I'm finding I no longer want or need the item, something else made do, or it just stopped being interesting (the Dopamine hit of gratification). This has taken me 2 years of discipline though, it was very hard at first, but I am so much better at it, so now if I do buy/acquire something I really value it, use it, love it. Good luck, you will get there, its the thinking about it that helps, being aware.

@@A2Zandeverything I agree with what you're saying. I use to work on a farm in the summer times and understand how some years are more bountiful than others. So far I've been decluttering my clothes which I'm finding to be difficult because I work in an office which is usually business casual but I sometimes need to go fully suited. I also live in a place that experiences all four seasons. So I have come to the realization that my minimalist wardrobe will contain more items that most KZread's wardrobes. As far as prepping goes, we have implemented a nice rotation of the items we often eat which all have a shelf life of between 3-5 years. Next on the list is to take it to the next level and plan on my bulk items that I can store for 25-30 years. I do think that most people often think of prepping and only think items and for get about skills. I think that it's more about the skills you have to survive than the tools you have. So that's what I'm working on now.

Beeing a dad with two children, my wife and I made the rule to wait at least one week. In case of a persistent urge and need, the partner that wants to buy an item, has to write a pitch document. This should contain alternative products, alternative ideas, upgrade strategies and also things to sell before buying the product.

My mom has a shopping addiction and her strategy for that is this: Amazon Wishlist. You can add a button to your browser to add something to it from literally anywhere. I personally use Shoptagr because it helps with coupons and things but wishlists are an invaluable resource. She doesn't open hers until she has let at least a month go by and often finds she doesn't even want whatever it was or it's sold out by then. Seems to be helping she hasn't spent much money these days.

Think it is not good to budget on food - I always look for what is Bio, healthy and in season. Only buy unpackaged and not wrapped in plastic. Mostly buy loose from smaller family businesses or at one of the local fresh market foodstalls. This is very possible in Switzerland. Food here is always fresh and good quality. But it is an expensive country.

As a teacher, whenever I see something different and appealing, I can't resist but I buy them thinking (i know this is just an excuse) that I will give them as a gift to my students when they are good at something. However, during quarantine days, I am not personally together with my students. Thus, it is just a temptation that I need to find a way to stop😑😑😑

Thanks. Yes, the "indirect" costs you talked about, about 5.5 minutes in are something that most people do not consider. It's amazing just how your money can multiply when you don't go into stores even if you don't make very much money. Like I always say, if you don't go shopping you won't spend anything. This has always helped in my purchase history. Plus, if you put money in the bank it increases especially with compound interest. I've really enjoyed watching your editing techniques. I used to be able to do this with video tape but then got out of practice when media formats changed. I can understand the concepts such as layering images because this has been done for years, but electronically it is a different process and I hope to catch up one of these days.

I’ve seen similar strategies scattered among other minimalist channels, but you’ve summarized them all here very well-thank you for that! Great tips! I love the idea of changing the mindset from just checking the bank account. Because just because there is money available, it doesn’t mean I have to bring in unnecessary stuff. During the pandemic I have been utilizing online shopping mostly from Amazon. It became too easy to order something and have it delivered within a couple of days. I am not setting a limit of one monthly online order from Amazon. I will add things to my cart as I think of them but do not immediately purchase them as I did before. Then when it’s time to do the monthly order I can decide what I really want to purchase and what can wait until next month or even be taken off the list.

This video made me realise I've always lived the minimalism lifestyle due to my mum outlook on quality over quantity but I've splurged and lived in maximalism at the lowest state of mind I got periodically. Now the clutter and the financial goals make me want to go back to healthy habits I find through a minimalistic approach, which is hard when living with a maximalist compulsory buyer! I write my Needs and Wants once a year, and look at how balanced the Wants and Needs are. Even when being a strong minded non-mainstream personality I do tend to buy more Wants than Needs while I could buy ten times the needed items with the amount of money and effort put to purchase the wanted ones.

Regarding buying food.....I think it's ok to splurge every so often because it's still less expensive than going out to eat. Also, if you know that you are going to use/ buy an item often .....and it's on sale, ...... stock up on it (but not go crazy) it will also save you money because when you need it and it's not on sale, you will pay top dollar for it!

I am grateful for the help I've found so far..your vid is very professional..I just desire for more ..for instance I feel like I'm a maximalist minimalist & extreme minimalism is the closest to a decent explanation.. personality is so unique..& so is minimalism

My 'To buy' shopping list and my Wishlist are on my Google Notes (mostly because it's easy to update them instead of writing it down and having to tear off pages from my notebook). Before every trip, I look around to see if certain things are running out (like detergent or moisturizer) and put it in a to-buy list, so I won't be scratching my head trying to remember what things I need when I'm out there. Been trying so hard to save money for a new phone, but unexpected expenses come up. Hope I can buy the one for me by the end of the year.

I am guilty of buying a bit too much lately, from being home during the pandemic. Luckily no clutter, and I making use of everything I buy with so much free time. I bought presents for others, too. 🙃 Experiences used to mean more...than objects...but home too much.

I have always hated shopping. Hanging out at a mall is a waste of time and energy (unless it has a bookstore!). I much prefer to go grocery shopping by myself (also less expensive). Can you tell I’m an introvert?
