How to shoot better pictures in harsh light

A quick demo from a workshop where I show you a few options to combat harsh direct sunlight. If you know your gear and lighting, shooting at the worst time of the day can create great results. Apologies for the poor sound quality at times, this was shot during a live workshop under difficult, windy conditions. I trust that you find value.

    Great Tutorial. Amazing how the quality of the photos increased to the beautiful dreamy dramatic high speed sync. Shots with scrim diffuser and silver reflected were great affordable option. What size reflector did you use? I assume you could have also used a 6 stop ND filter to bring f/16 to f/2 without high-speed sync for the same dramatic shots in the end.

    The 6 stop ND filter would also reduce the flash light reaching the camera, so the flash would still struggle to overpower the sun. You could move the flash very close to the subject and try a ND filter, but the flash would still need to be softened with a light modifier. All light modifiers cost some light-usually 1-2 stops, sot the speedlight is always going to struggle. Maybe find some shade to shoot in where the ambient light is less. O find a speedlight that has High Speed Synch function.

    Nice video with the softbox was stunning. It seems for larger families the best option would really be multiple speed lights sun behind or just lift shadows in edit?

  • @Brettflorens

    @Brettflorens

    Spedlights in daylight won't have much effect - they are around 50w/s and this Quadra is 400w/s - so 8 times more powerfull than a speedlight. The off camera flash would be the best option for a family. Lifting the shadows in post is a last resort. Thanks for the comment

    There were some complaints about the noise, oh well, the information was very much worth putting up with a little noise. THank you very much. I do have a question though. I see in another comment you do not use speedlights. The big softbox I assume had studio lighting that uses wall outlet electricity 115/230 volts and you had some big batteries. Have you used or considered the Godox small Ad200 through Ad600/1200 (which can compete with the sun) flashes that use onboard battery and are light and portable? I have seen some very good results from these from some professional photographers and wondered if you tried them and have an opinion on the quality and usability of this type of flash over speedlights or studio lighting.

    Thanks for your comment Carlos, I don't use speedlights because of the lack of power and I shoot for high end clients and what the client experience to be one of a commercial or fashion shoot. That is intentional. The big softbox is portable, they are battery powered, small and lightweight. www.elinchrom.com/battery/elb500ttl.html I haven't used the Godox range. Have a great day!

    Brett Florens Thank you for your reply! So I have a follow up question: when you took the next few theatrical, stylish looking shots with the Elinchrom all you did was move your aperture to f/16 to decrease the flash power and help it blend with the natural light better? I like how the images pop more once you made that adjustment.

    ISO 400 in that mid day sun light at f2.8? Way throw away the color bit depth? And dynamic range, when you don’t ned to? You have al the light you ned at ISO 64... if you can’t hod the camera sturdy at 1/800sek get a tripod!

    @@Brettflorens Oh wow, how unprofessional. So you make a video, pretending to "teach" others something, and if another person tells you you're teaching the wrong method (because it sucks and looks fake) you snap back and say "well my clients like it"? Good luck with your business buddy. But don't pretend to be a professional who can teach others how to do it.
