    This video was a lifesaver. I'm writing, co-directing, and editing a short film for the first time ever and preproduction is extremely overwhelming, especially on a budget. Videos like this keep my afloat. Thank you so much!

    This video is really gonna help me! 3 months back, I started to shoot a short series as a Director with my team. Due to less budget, we had to shoot it with 2 cameras available with us, Cannon 80D and 200D. And most of the time, we had to manage with only one camera. I faced a lot of questions while shooting. One such question was- How to shoot the scenes with a single camera? Although I took the shots but those shots were not that satisfying. I was disappointed with myself. But after seeing this video, I think now I know what I need to do.

    I have seen several YT videos explaining this technique, some are quite slick videos in themselves but yours with just yourself in front of a whiteboard with a dodgy sketch is by far the best in terms of explaining it. (btw red and blue shows up better than green on a white board).

    This has really helped me Michael !!!. I am a movie enthusiast and always wondered how the DOP is able to switch camera so fast between the dialogues and also take close ups and wide angles all in 1 take . LOL :D . I never knew it would take so many takes and hours to shoot a scene . Thanks again !!!

    Firstly, i can totally relate to ur frustration about the brand new pens that ain't working :) Good video. You practically shared what is typically my current filming experience. Until I am able to get more cameras to shoot with, this has been my most recent approach - ONE CAMERA, for filming not only dialogue scenes but virtually all scenes... some required awkward actor-blocking can make it even more difficult to shoot with one camera but with a bit of endurance and easy-to-work-with actors, it is doable. Sometimes people don't know what goes in a film shoot, all they see is a finished/polished product, which may have taken countless takes, hours on set, flipping a single camera for every scene, endless editing sessions in post production, etc. The most difficult part in my experience with shooting multiple scenes or angles simultaneously with one camera, is getting the actors to replicate the same body posture within the same spot that the previous corresponding shots were taken.

    ok so if you do 2 different takes with 2 different angles and record the audio for both, in post production you need to sync up 1 audio track, but there are 2 scenes, what if one of the actors lines are off by a second or two, would that not ruin the whole scene? I apologize for not understanding.

  • @MichaelRoninTV

    @MichaelRoninTV

    6 жыл бұрын

    Well you could plug a mic directly into the camera if you wanted to but the best way to go about it would be to get yourself an external sound recorder (Tascam, etc) and a boom mic if possible. That way it doesn't matter where your camera is, you record the audio externally and sync it up later in post. If you are on a strict budget then you could just plug a microphone directly into your camera and do it that way although the results are not as good. I hope that helps :)

    Very helpfull.. Also i wanted to know that if a scene is long and the actors keep changing positions in the room, so do we need to take the masters for the full scene? cause its a long dialogue scene and the actors may not wana repeat the dialogues again n again. so can we just shoot a movement only(actors walking form one place to another) instead of the whole action?

  • @MichaelRoninTV

    PLEASE HELP! How do you film a scene with one camera but have the audio of the dialogue seem as if the clip isn't cut, How do you make the audio seem as if the audio is flowing constantly and not cut!?!?

  • @MichaelRoninTV

    @MichaelRoninTV

    7 жыл бұрын

    If possible use the one audio clip (this only works if the audio syncs well to the video) if not use crossfades between one clip to another to make a smooth transition between the two. Also, it helps to have an atmos track which is basically a 'silent' part of the audio from where you filmed, have this track run the whole length of your scene so that when you cut from one audio clip to another there is no harsh cut as there will still be some sound from the atmos track there. Does that all make sense? Lol i hope it does

  • @TigminiTv

    @TigminiTv

    7 жыл бұрын

    +Michael Ronin Yeah makes sense ive tried it. But the audio cut always overpowered the silent track, I bought a better mic so indoors can get better but outdoorss?! Yikes idk the next solution besides another camera

  • @MichaelRoninTV

    @MichaelRoninTV

    So have you also tried to crossfade the audio tracks? This will make it a smooth transition between both and won't be a rough 'cut'. What software are you using to edit?

    +Michael Ronin Plus What if it picks up a sound that is noticeable and its half way through it like a car going by, then it would only have half the sound of the car making the audio clip seem obviously cut? Sorry hard questions but im on a small budget

    The same way you would do the video although I usually use software like Audition to do it. Audio is very hard to get right, it helps to have background sound/Atmos track and things like that

    For operating the boom, should the mic just be on the actor who the camera is on or should we move the mic to each actors mouths as they are speaking?

    Yes, moving the boom/mic to whoever is speaking is a good idea as you might end up needing to use that audio if it works out better than the audio from another take :)

    how do you do it when you want the audio to start for the other actor when the camera is on one actor. Like when the dialogue for one starts early and then when the angle switches to the talking actor for the audio to continue without a weird break or change like the back round noise cuts noticecably. Sorry I had a hard time explaining this. Please just understand the question

    You can do what is called a 'J cut' and this basically means you start the audio on the first video clip (to do this you trim back the second video clip and the first sound clip and then move them together so the cut is shaped like a 'J'). I hope that makes sense, I might actually do a tutorial on this shortly. The best way I have found when switching audio clips from shot to shot is to crossfade between them, there is a audio transition in premiere for this that I use and it's called 'constant power' or you can even use 'exponential fade'.. Basically this just fades them together nicely. Most of the time though when you are filming you will record some 'room noise' or 'atmosphere noise' and you add that in to your scene and make it play the whole way through, this helps when there is cuts in your dialogue audio and things like that. I hope this helps and all makes sense, it's kind of hard to put into worded text lol :)

    Would there be another general effect that would do this that's not exclusively in adobe premier. I am using Hitfilm 4 Express. It had this audio fade transition effect. Do you think that could possibly get the job done?

    +FlipFilms yeh I think that should work. There is also just sound editing software such as Adobe Audition or Audacity that could work as well :)

    Give it a try, phones are capable of pretty good video as long as your lighting is decent and you're able to match your footage pretty well from the other camera. Give it a test and see what you can do :)

    The best option would probably be to buy some sort of microphone that you can use with your phone. Most phones have pretty bad audio recording but I guess you could still just use the phone by itself. Rode make a great microphone for phones, I believe it's called the SmartLav. I hope that helps :)

    If they aren't in the frame it doesn't matter so much but it does help the actor in frame 'act' better in my opinion when the other actor (even out of frame) goes through their scene. I hope that makes sense

    What if it is an action scene with lots of change in angles and activities, do I have to cut and continue each angle or do I film one angle, and then another and another and another?

  • @MichaelRoninTV

    @MichaelRoninTV

    7 жыл бұрын

    Yeh so this is really going to come down to how good the choreography is between the actors.. if they can reenact the scene perfectly over and over, you can just film the whole thing from one angle and then keep changing angles/shots and repeating the scene. Even if they don't do it perfectly, you will still be able to do quick cuts so it will look like it is all continuing nicely :)

    How many cuts do Actors take in between delivering a dialogue scene? For eg if an actor has to deliver a one minute long dialogue,will he memorize all of it a say it in one go,or he will take 6 to 7 shots to complete it (i am not asking about retakes)

  • @MichaelRoninTV

    @MichaelRoninTV

    A good actor would have usually learned their lines to be able to do it all in one take but the good thing about shooting multiple shots is that you can change to another one to hide a cut where they may have forgotten their lines. This doesn't always work of course so it's always best if an actor can remember their whole scene
