How To Shoot A Gun With Both Eyes Open with Navy SEAL "Coch"

Спорт

In this quick video, retired Navy SEAL Mark "Coch" Cochiolo addresses a challenge many new shooters encounter--how to shoot a gun with both eyes open.
For some shooters, it comes naturally. For others, it doesn't.
Here's something you can try that might help if you struggle to shoot with both eyes open.

I’m left eyed dominant and right handed. I still struggle with this. I see two images all the time and I just needed to train myself on which one to look at. It’s become easier the more I practice, but still have a long way to go. Best thing you can do is dry fire and practice a lot.

Just keep your head straight and move your pistol to the left to have it before your left eye. Don't turn your head. Eye have the other problem...I never see the double image except on long range sessions. I'd like to know how I can go back and forth between both cause there are drills with covered sights and so on.

Just train, when I was a kid and in hospital I couldn't use my right hand so after two weeks or so I was drawing and writing with my left same as with my right arm before.. Later when I got out I've forget to use the left arm again (but two weeks without getting out of the bed with only a pencil and a paper as toys they gave us you can imagine how much I have tried to do something with my left arm)

So how I fixed this was on the advice of I think T-REX arms channel. I am cross dominant, left eye dominant and right handed. What I do is shift my head slightly so my left eye is in line with my sight picture. it becomes pretty instinctive after a while if you haven't solved it since the years ago when you posted this comment. I can now get my shots to hit generally where I am aiming as opposed to being way off (a common symptom of aiming improperly). I struggle with consistency however I have been only shooting for 4ish months.

Adrenaline forces both eyes to stay open during a dangerous situation. Last thing you want to see is two images of the target and not know which one to acquire. Great video.

You get two superimposed images - one per eye. You can train to sight using both at the same time and use the average, or sight using just one of the pictures. There are three positions to use left, center, and right, and you can play with them by winking either eye. Center is the easiest to get right using both eyes.

Here’s where I struggle. Initial target acquisition with both eyes open is generally clear. Follow up shots are terrible, unless I drop my firearm and re-acquire the target. Maybe my eyes are having trouble transitioning from front sight to target, then back to from sight. I now also wear corrective lenses with is a big change.

A tip is to look at your target beyond your sights, both eyes open - to see the target with your direct vision. You’ll then see your sights blurry with your peripheral vision, and then you can “look down” (still with your eyes open) over to your sights with your direct vision and you’ll see them very clearly with both eyes.

I never see the ghost image when I try it or seeing past covered sights. Either my right eye dominance is distinctive or I'm doing something wrong. I've seen it before at 25-50m range, but it would be helpful if there is a sure way when my eyes are forced to it so I can access both.

  • @CG-jm2zp
    @CG-jm2zp3 жыл бұрын

This is great information. I’ve found that regarding “ghost images,” the right-side ghost image in my sights is my left eye’s focus point. And vice a versa.

  • @denisdegamon8224

You may be left eye dominant. Make smal triangle with both hands extended out in front and place an object or target inside said hand openning. Now with both eyes open Close your right eye....if the target seems to be outside of yoyr hand sight, your right eye dominant. Without moving, close your left eye and the target will be inside your hand openning.....verifying your right eye as being your dominant eye. The opposite is true if your left eye dominant, just do the same drill with both eyes. In that drill the target will appear as if it moved when you close your left eye. Easy peezy.

@@denisdegamon8224 I'm left eye dominant, and problematically, that means there is nearly no sight picture of the gun if i have both eyes open, the main one just ceases to exist. It kind of does, but hardly, it's like shooting while near blind.

I picked up and shoot my first gun a couple days ago. I tend to close my non dominant eye/hand and I’m pretty accurate. But I was also told keeping both eyes open was a better practice. I feel like I’m crossing my eyes when I have them both open, and when I try to look at my target through the iron sights. My eyes start to hurt and see blurry. Ugh gotta keep working on this.

I think shooting with a pistol RDS should solve the problem for people that shoot irons with one eye closed ? They are then target focused and looking thru the dot naturally with a single sight picture rather than 3 with irons I’ve never had an issue shooting with both eyes open as my left eye is legally blind so right eye dominance has already been naturally trained into my sight focus But the thumb focus trick is the ticket to understanding this issue when using irons

no point using ironsights as they never work. no point using laser sights as they give away your position to the enemy. a scope is for the best but it only really works on a rifle. it's cumbersome on a handgun. handguns are meant to be shot from the hip.

Problem: when i aim with two eyes open the main image of a gain just stops existing, the wrong gun has a more solid picture so my mind sees the main one as wrong and gets rid of it unless i focus on it, which makes the target become fucked.

Now, I'm torn if I'm going to practice moving the gun or tilting my head to use my dominant left eye. I actually tried tilting my head and moving the gun to be in line with my left eye but my right eye is doing the aiming. Do anyone have the same experience? If you are, what are you practicing?
