Update: Dishes arrived safe from NY to CA!

Many years ago, I splurged and purchased a wooden, heavy-duty, 24-inch guillotine type paper cutter for a couple hundred dollars. I've been using it ever since to cut cardboard sheets to custom sizes for use when packaging. It's a real time saver, and makes nice clean and square cuts to the cardboard.

Thank you for this! I am a new seller on EBay and 90% of my items are glass collectable. Every time I pack an item, My Husband shakes his head and says " you are going overboard". I do everything you show on this video, including collecting boxes.!! showed this to my hubby! - No comment from him. LOL

Yesterday I shipped one stoneware plate that was a bit larger than average. I double bubbled it, put biodegradable peanuts in the void, then into a larger box with peanuts. The only thing I did differently was using foam board in the bottom of the box rather than cardboard. STILL I was worried about it! Today I have 3 Christmas plates to ship and realized I should research before shipping multiples. You’ve given me confidence that yesterday’s pkg will arrive safely, and I have new info for today’s shipment. I’m a new eBay seller and appreciate this video so much!

Thanks for this video. I always watch the shipping videos as I'm always trying to learn the safest way to ship items.

Several things...i sell lots of breakables and I haven't had a broken item in 20 years. Breakage is often caused by things banging around against each other, even with bubble wrap. I wrap up dishes with tissue, place a paper plate or a piece of small bubble wrap between each plate then wrap tightly with shrink wrap plastic so they don't move. Then I wrap the set of plates with half inch bubble wrap so all sides have at least two layers of bubbles on each side. Wrapping together also takes up less bubblewrap and less space. I also use lots of peanuts but heavy items will squish down the peanuts causing an increase in the voids during transport, causing increased movement. For these its better to use brown packing paper or newspaper in a pinch to fill the voids.

Glad I saw you tonight on Kats live. I am the one that asked about calculating shipping. I am like Kat and live in Alabama on the Gulf coast. Great packing! My post mistress said that things have to withstand a 20 foot drop. The University of Vermont engineering students used to have a competition where they devised a container in which to put an egg so that it would survive a 25 drop. I'm tempted to try it. Should it be a list challenge? 😊

My Costco always has bins full empty cardboard boxes near the exit. A nice variety of shapes and sizes. Every time I go grocery shopping I always grab a few bundles. Nice video 👍

Same here! I’ve actually shown me sourcing cardboard from Costco on my videos.

Shipping securely is so important because postal services are so swamped with packages stuff does get abused, thrown, stacked, squished , even kicked pretty much rough handling. So yeah extra packaging is extremely important. Thanks for demonstrating for us how to pack fragile items. It helps me gain confidence in shipping fragile items.

Wonderful instructional video Dom! I hope everyone double boxes and do not learn the healed way as I sadly have in the past.

Love this lot, wish I could find some PotteryBarn Reindeer items, very nice. I do the extra cardboard bottom and Styrofoam too. Great tip on not taping the original paper, would not have thought that. I do the paper, small bubble, large bubble and even wrap a thin Styrofoam when I have it. Tip with peanuts, put them in shopping bags (Walmart, CVS, etc.), when packing around items, helps from them going all over when customer opens box. Great Video!!! 💜💜💜

Hey Dom, good job. I've found for double box jobs if you have some gap between boxes like that a layer of medium bubble works the best instead of the enviro-peanuts. Every challenging pack job is different through. Keep up the good content! I love seeing how other people approach stuff like this.

I reinforce the bottom of the box with an extra piece of cardboard but securing it with tape is a level up! Really nice job on this sale and excellent packing technique! I’ve used those biodegradable peanuts and they are really nice! My kid put one in his mouth once so yeah…they dissolve LOL

Wow, I didnt realize they were worth so much. My parents still use those same plates every Christmas dinner. Not selling but good to know.

Thank you for preaching on prices. I see so many items with positive sold ratios and price erosion. We are killing ourselves. And so many KZreadrs are preaching beating the other guy with no caveat for high demand items.

I've shipped plates before, but wanted to hear another opinion, as I have picked up 10 pristine gold encrusted Minton plates and was planning to sell all 10 in one sale. I smiled at the advice/instructions as the ideas were very similar to mine. I still feel skittish about shipping all 10 in 1 box. It would be quite heavy & the box quite large. I enjoyed the video. It was well done & showed your experience.

Nicely done Sir. A tip for one and all. Your local Auto parts store, trashes 99% of their boxes. Many of them are ideal for smaller items like a coffee mug or a ball cap at 6"x6"x6" Obviously the pones with printed information are no good to resellers, but if the printing is limited to one side, guess where your shipping label goes?

Use the regional stores to your advantage. They may sell it cheaper than ebay but not everyone has access to them. You don't have to be the cheapest price on a ebay as well. If you have an account people can trust and specialize in specifical categories people will gladly pay a little more.

Nice, I'm a few minutes in as you taped up the box, and wondering what tape dispenser and brands of tape you or any other viewers would recommend. I've been using cheap Dollar General tape for too long and the few seconds at a time either running out or having the tape slip and get stuck to itself is adding up to lots of lost productivity.

I shipped a Pedestal cake plate and cut the shape of the plate out of 4 pieces of foam that were the size of the box. It arrived safely 🙏🏼

You pack well. I keep in mind that the box will be thrown against a wall and have a coffee dumped on it. If it passes that test, then good to go.

@@dnunn9475 I would make sure the original box had appropriate cushioning and void fill inside so nothing moves inside and the put that box in another box, making sure it can’t move around inside.

The moving companies say to pack them vertically, like in a dishwasher. Why?

People complain about peanuts, regardless if they are the ones that are easier on the environment, because they make a mess 😢. Great video 👍❤️

I completely agree on the wrapping of the plates themselves but as someone who values vintage items and the packages they come in I wouldn’t have put tape on the original box. There’s ways of reinforcing it without taping directly on it. Or at the least disclose in the listing you will be adding tape to the original box. If the picture shows the box without tape then you add it after, no bueno. Keep up the good content though!

I see your point. Normally I would disclose that in the listing but I didn’t realize the state of the bottom of the box until Mrs PT gave it to me. Also, We showed the top part of the box in the pictures but not the bottom. The top of the box already had a bunch of wear to it and the real selling point of this set is the plates themselves so I’d really be surprised if there was an issue. How else would you reinforce the bottom?.

How would you package a 2 piece glass cake/pie plate on a pedestal with a glass dome with glass knob on top?

Will the buyer be upset that you put tape on the Pottery Barn box? I always double box breakables but still, I can get breaks once in a while. Great video as usual!

I doubt it. The box already had significant wear on it and was evident in the pictures. We did not show the bottom part of the box in the pics and most people really don’t care what the bottom part of a box looks like since it’s sitting on the floor and not visible. She’s going to be more upset if she receives broken plates

No but I have FedEx put on fragile stickers. USPS charges $10 for those and they seem to target anything identified as fragile for destruction so I just rely on the packaging.

Will scrunched up newspaper work for void spaces instead of peanuts? Peanuts are very expensive to get here but I can get free newspaper. Thought, anyone?

Yes. That will work.

The only thing I wouldn't do is tape the original box. I post pictures when I have the original box and don't want any changes to the box. I cardboard the heck out of every side of the original box, but do not tape it. I also put it in another box.

I wouldn't tape an original box. Maybe shrink wrap

Using tape moves a collectible from mint in box to you just screwed the pooch. Yes there are pottery barn collectors who would not be happy campers. I won't be helping you again. You're green in collectibles and antique.

The box integrity was already ruined. What I did helped strengthen it. The original box was put in another box but without securing the bottom the plates could fall through when trying to lift that box out.

@@PrimeTimeTreasureHunter What you do is perfectly fine and I actually had done it your way on occasion, but I am also reassuring these people that it can be done like they suggest too, as I had tried that as well and both ways worked fine for me in the past. I had customers asking me not to put any kind of tape on the original box whatsoever.

Just take a heavy piece of cardboard and put it in the bottom of the box ?? If the original box was a selling feature, wouldn't want to receive it taped all over . Gotta be a better way .

Nope. The main selling point is the dishes. Ppl just want the box for storage convenience. They are not going to care about the bottom of it. And they are also not going to want to find themselves in a situation where they remove an untaped sagging box that results in the dishes falling out when trying to lift the box out. Most importantly, the plates need to get there unbroken.

Actually, you have no clue what you are talking about. Just go check my eBay feedback which is 100% positive including on ALL breakable and fragile items. And go watch my vids on how to ship glasses without them breaking because the person who received those items mentioned in the comments how she received them in perfect shape. So, get some facts before typing stupid comments.
