How to Shine Metal, Another Approach - Kevin Caron

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

From www.kevincaron.com - Artist Kevin Caron shares another way to shine metal using something he first used as a child while polishing brass on a boat ....
Caron is shining a copper sculpture he has been making. A viewer had asked how he got the sculpture, Moonshine, so bright and shiny. The upper part of Moonshine is 3" diameter, 16 gauge wall copper from an old solar hot water system. Caron used it to make a trefoil knot.
It has a shaft that goes into a pedestal where there are two bearings so the sculpture can spin. While that pedestal is at the powder coater, Caron is polishing the knot - a lot!
Bare copper with no preservative will oxidize quickly, even in the desert. So Caron goes old school again. He first encountered this process when he was growing up in Connecticut. Being a little kid, he got to polish the brass on his family's boat.
One of the products he used was Nevr-Dull. Caron opens the can to show that it is filled with some sort of wool soaked in a chemical. It also preserves and helps seal the metal to keep it from oxidizing.
Caron has used this product a lot, including using it in the military to shine his buttons and belt buckle. It works great!
There's no need for a clear coat over the Nevr-Dull. It'll last 6 - 8 months, maybe a year, in the desert. If you're near the shore, you might need to polish it more frequently. Caron likes the look of the raw copper, and this allows it to stay that way. You're also able to touch the knot to spin it - the chemical keeps your body oils from soiling the metal or leaving prints.
Does it really make a difference? Moonshine is already pretty shiny, so Caron takes a piece of copper he hasn't yet worked on and rubs it with Nevr-Dull. Within a minute, it looks much shinier.
Where do you get it? There aren't many boatyards in Arizona, so Caron bought it at an auto part store. You can also get it online.
Meanwhile, Caron tells viewers they can find him on Facebook by searching for "Kevin Caron, Artist" and be sure to subscribe to this KZread channel to see more videos - he adds a new one every week.
You can also see more how-to videos and his wild work at www.kevincaron.com .
Or you can stick around for another moment and see what Caron was laughing about at the beginning of the video.

Hey Kev, boy do I remember taking the can of BRASSO to my Dad's emblems and Army belt buckles. I found out about NEVER DULL from a fellow Harley rider. Picked it up at a truck stop here in Houston , TX. Only minor problem is that both polishing compounds / swaddling cloth dry up after a while and usually left me with darkened finger tips. It does help on chrome and removes some heat "blue-ing " on exhausts. Keep em' coming !

Hey Kevin, here in the 🇬🇧 uk, it known as duraglit, or used to be, but it seems to be renamed “Brasso” and get the wadding, looks identical, we used to buy it for cleaning the brasses we hung from the wall, we used to live in a very old cottage. Circa mid to late 1500’s so old enough.. be safe.....phil

+Rita Weiss Vinegar: Simply pour a generous amount of vinegar onto a soft scouring pad* for an eco-friendly alternative to harsh chemicals. The stain will lift immediately. - Lemon juice and baking soda: Create a paste from equal parts lemon juice and baking soda, then scrub with a damp sponge. For tougher stains, leave the paste on for 15-30 minutes, then wipe clean. - Lemon juice and cream of tartar: Mix one tablespoon of cream of tartar with a few drops of lemon juice to create a paste, then smooth it on rust spots and rub it in vigorously with a soft sponge. - Club soda: Buff rust scuffs with a soda-dampened cloth. - Lighter fluid: If all else fails, try pouring lighter fluid on a clean cloth and scrubbing the rust spots clean. For safety, keep in mind that lighter fluid is highly flammable and can be toxic for the environment, so use this option as a last resort - and never around an open flame (make sure all nearby stove burners are off).

Kevin, As always I learned something new from you. Thanks. I have a question, many of your steel pieces are finished with what appears to be a rust patina. Does the process you use passivate the metal so that it won't corrode beyond the original treatment? What process do you use for that? Thanks in advance. Paul
