Try to memorize your cars gear ratios. A good way to start is 1st - 10mph 2nd - 20mph 3rd 30mph and so forth. When shifting from say 3rd to 2nd, wait until your very close to or at 20mph for a smooth shift. But this will depend on the car.

That's why we can still drive manual for automatic cars now a days

Manuel saves me a lot of speeding tickets. When I’m on gear 2 in NYC I stay on that gear to avoid going faster and getting a speeding ticket especially on Sundays. Vs automatic you can hit 37mph by mistake and get a ticket.

Typically shouldn’t have a problem with messing up your car in this mode, computer is in charge of never letting any dangerous shifts happen to your vehicle. Only thing it won’t do is stop you from going in reverse at 70 mph or something, then…that’s a huge problem

I struggle with shifting up after coming to a stop. I try and let the gear run up to between 3-4k the shift up but when I do it jerks. Another thing I struggle with is downshifting to a stop . I have a 2022 Corolla and it shift for me if I let it run too low so sometimes I will be counting the shifts in my head when suddenly it skips and my rhythm is messed up.

I read, but this is not in the manual, that the manual shifting works from gear 2. You might use W mode instead. Chrysler Crossfire

Thats not the clutch its probably you’re e brake

I'm driving an Audi A4 2013, and when I downshift (between 1k-2krpms), I notice the car jerks a bit and the rpms go really high. I have never driven manual so idk if this is normal or I'm doing something wrong. I usually apply the brake while downshifting.

There a sweet spot for down shifting in every car, ur just not hitting it but it won’t do anything to ur car. Over time you’ll get a better feel for it

Nooo you don’t need to release the break or gas when down or upshifting You can use Manuel mode for all gears and if you mess up jsut shove back to D and it’ll correct itself

Thx for the video, just wonder if I need to lose gas when upshifting, sometimes my car shift hard on the cold start. And if I do shift and lose gas, it will not hard shift. Just wonder if anyone else do the same way as me

Not really. On the Camaro I didn’t have to.

I have a question, I've only driven manuals before and I want to know: if I'm driving in manual mode of an automatic and I'm slowing down, do I have to do the downshifts too? Like when coming to a stop and I'm going in 3rd gear, do I have to get it down to 1st or the car will do it by itself? Thanks for the video man!

It depends on the manufacture and year. My 2021 Camaro is an automatic 10 speed but as I slow down it downshifts on its own so that I don’t have to pull it down like 5-10 times lol

I have a 2013 Scion FR-S I only use manual mode and it’s shifts down but, from my experience and idk about others, manual mode gives me a much better stop ability so I shift down you don’t have to but for me it takes way longer to stop.

I’ve been doing this in my car I have a bmw 328i 2007 idk if my car will down shift on it’s own when I stop so I just try to downshift around 1k Rpm’s or 1,500 but sometimes I feel my car jolt just a little so when should I down shift

I usually switch it with low speeds. Tiptronic is the same concept. Using the + to shift up and - to down shift. The speeds to shifts can range, just depends on the car but I usually shift between 2k RPM’s & 3k.

I would do some research on the vehicle you have. With my Camaro I did it by accident a few times at high speeds and never had problems.

Can you only start in manual from stationary ? what happens if you are going along, say at 70/80mph, in D & then change to M on DSG gearbox. Will there be crunching sounds from the gearbox & will car drop speed abruptly ?(getting an automatic car next week & never driven auto before !)

I doubt it but I wouldn’t do it. It happened to me a few Times going aprox 50mph and all it does it tells you the gear is currently in and you take over.

If ur driving automatic n you change it to manual it will just switch over to manual and keep you in whatever gear automatic had you in unless you shift, so you can switch in between the two while driving and it won’t do anything to ur car

Why does this not work, when the belt slips, but on the next journey the belt is able once again to make the car go faster than 50km/h and automatically reach the next gear and the manual shifting is working? Chrysler Crossfire? Is this the transmission emergency mode?

What’s the best gear to start on when your trying to race someone on the track. Should I start at second gear, down shift and then start up shifting?

If you are prepared to jump up gears quickly you can start in first. If you want something akin to manual takeoff, start in second.

I used to switch it when the car was at a stop. Sometimes I accidentally switch it when driving normal and nothing bad happened.

When slowing down is when you should lower the gears but of course have to practice it and react accordingly

You don’t use the paddle at all You shove the knob to the left and up shift and down shift from there You can shove it into Manuel mode at any speed and rime

Using the option +/- and the paddle shifters could bring a different experience when going to the track, etc. It all comes down to personal preference but is mainly used just to try something different.

depending on the car you're driving it could completely change how it drives... for example I drive a 2012 Maserati v8 and its still a great car in regular drive but when I put it into manual mode its like I teleported to something entirely new. Liked going from a sports car to a sports car with 5x more juice lol

Idk if you saw the comment about it, but you don’t have to let go of the gas! They said it could mess up and put too much stress the computer that automatically shifts due to the transmission.

If I understand correctly, if you have paddle shifters holding the downshift paddle will automatically downshift into the lowest possible gear and then you can do your hard acceleration. If you have the gear select shifter, holding the selector in the downshift position should downshift into the lowest possible gear and then you're free to go crazy

Why would you shift with rpm’s so high wouldn’t that be harder on the car and transmission?

As long as your not in the red your good, manuals are made to use the full capacity of the gear, slapshifts allow you to to do the same thing in manual mode

It's not really that hard on the car. Unless you're really redlining it, engines and transmissions actually quite enjoy being used like this. It's when youre lugging the engine all day that the transmission and engine is working harder to keep the car alive. His only real downside is that the automatic is probably better at finding economical shifts than him.

you can damage the car if you downshift too early . and when to change gears depends son your car. but it usually is around 2k-3krpm. i think some many cars it would tell you when on the dash

You could potentially damage your car by "money shifting" which is where you drop from a high gear to a low gear very quickly. If you're in 6th and downshift to 2nd, that gear is going to be spinning so fast that it ends up destroying the gear, and that will end up running you a whole new tranny and it's an expensive fix. However, this is very rare. Good thing is that basically every single automatic with a manual mode has a throttle position sensor within the transmission circuit that determines the qualities of a gear change according to the load on the engine (where it gets the load from how open the throttle body is, and running some calculations). If the computer senses that the engine load is greater than is characteristic of a particular downshift (like there being a much higher engine load than should be allowed for a certain gear), then it will cockblock you from making the shift to protect the transmission. When you start using the system, sometimes you might downshift at inopportune times, and the engine will make a louder noise, but it's nothing to worry about unless you're redlining it beyond all recognition.

It might be different for your car, and I'm not well versed enough on the relevant electromechanics to give you a solid answer. Take it with a grain of salt and research your car to make a good judgment. Drive safe!

No...actually kinda bad for the trans. Literally every transmission I know of shifts while throttle is being used. Not when let off. Almost every auto is supposed to shift when accelerating...that's why the computer does everything. Letting go the gas pedal will just put more stress on the computer to make an unnecessary shift at the wrong time.

@@liljessivlogs9866 yesss but only downshift at the appropriate speeds Don’t down shift from 4th to 2nd while slowing down by 10 mph If you did it wrong the car will slightly jerk On my v8 it’s kinda like the feeling of going over a small speed bump

@@billyjones1873 depends on what year your car is but honestly first Don’t use manual mode if you plan on driving normal I use manual mode only for driving fast imo - I start on first gear at a stop and step on it Redline it to 6k rpm then I shift up and repeat with every gear There’s no way of “missing a shift because it’ll stay in that gear no matter what but If you’re driving manual driving normal usually up shift at 3/4 rpm and downshift at 1/2 rpm based on speed It’s all trial and error just mess around with it Upshifting early will NEVER damage the car or anything It’s just downshifting that will force the car to engine stop which cannn feel damaging but it’s pretty hard to mess up

First gear. If you start in Second gear the vehicle will move a lot slower
