I'm from the US and they don't really mind if you double-clutch or flout but when you're in a school I know they prefer you to double clutch for the test but after that its only recommended like you said in Canada.

I got my Class 1 in BC and during my test I floated the gears. I NEVER learned how to double clutch although I understand the principles. I used a hybrid method. I don’t use the clutch to upshift but use the clutch to take it out of gear on the downshift.

Otherwise double clutching is a good thing to know if you mess the shift up pretty bad. Double clutching usually saved me to make a correction without having to stop and start over.

I suck at floating gears. Especially since mine is a wonky 13 speed without quick shifting. Can't just drop the accelerator and shift, gotta clutch, neutral, switch, disengage clutch. Same for lo-hi and split: clutch-neutral-switch-disengage Due note: most frustrating is the splitter sometimes fails to work so going 4H to 1H. *this is done in a simulator rig*

Full gear is usualy worth 500 rpm ish. And a half gear is about 250 rpm. If you try for a downshift at 1400 rpm and need to make another 500 rpm for the next lower gear that engine is pretty much wound right out, harder on everything mechanical and if you need to accelerate again your gonna need a different gear if you’re slammed on the redline already. Easier to shift down low. These motors are happy down at 11-1200 rpm

You don't wear out a clutch by using it to shift, it's worn out by slow maneuvering, backing up into a loading dock or parking spot, starting out from a dead stop with a heavy load. So you can learn to shift without using the clutch, just be sure to save some money to replace the transmission as you learn to shift.

  • @markpolice3585

That's a load of crap. You don't need to use the clutch to shift. I've drove almost 800,000 miles, 500,000 of that with the same truck, and I've never had any transmission problems. Clutch, shifter, air switch, nothing.

Manufacturers often err on the side of caution. A lot of the big companies are switching to autos because they hire a bunch of newbies that can't float gears properly. If you couldn't shift without using the clutch, it wouldn't be so easy to do. Do you even drive a semi? If you do, I'm sure that the makers of clutch return springs and your orthopedic surgeon will be thanking you soon enough. About 1% of drivers double clutch on their actual job. The other 99% actually know what they're doing. Being required to double clutch at trucking schools and for state tests has nothing to do with reality. It's some stupid rule they came up to give someone something to do. I very rarely grind gears and haven't a clutch replacement yet. So try again

Does an 18 shift above or below the mph for a 10. In other words if I drive it like an 8 without splitting what are the mph ranges compared to a 10?

As a 48 year long haul driver I can tell you that your shifting is excellent. You pass! However, I was horrified to see that you chose to not have adjustable safety convex mirrors on both sides. You have dramatically narrowed your field of view. Why do that to yourself? A stick on convex is NOT adjustable, so the upper half is looking at the sky, and the inner half is looking at your truck. How is that going to help you? You now have one quarter of a useful convex. For the price of a couple of adjustable convex mirrors, you could save thousand in litigation and accident headaches.
