Thanks for this explanation. You will have to remember which assets you hide in Ledger Live, or write it down somewhere. If it's a lot of assets and you forget, you might not find some of them back

As long as you remember your alternate pin, you can always go back in and just try several cryptocurrencys by choosing add account. You might stumble on one you forgot about.

It does not mind if you login in the original account or the passphrase account, all your assets are visible in your Ledger live once you did ad the accounts or imported them. But yes when you have to do a new setup some day you need to remember the tokens/account you have. But actually that is also the situation in the original recovery seed account. I assume people know or write down their crypto buys and so the holdings.

You literally should do the videos for ledger. The Dan guy really was confusing. I thought I had to do a passphrase for each coin. OMG

Thanks for this great video! It will be a direct hit by viewers because off the extra safety for your Ledger holdings. I like to add that people can check the new pass phrase setup for error free working. There is no need to do a test transaction from the pass phrase account to check if you ever can whitdraw coins. Just do the steps to verify one off your receiving adres in your new pass phrase setup and if that’s okay it’s working perfect. Should be but just for peace off mind. The under duress situation can be a handy thing in some usecase but that’s not the biggest thing to worry about. I mean they can also force you to empty you bank account when someone is together whit you on a computer. Highly uncommon situation unless you are a known miljonair. Best is to keep your Ledger in some vault so you cannot sent crypto anyway. The 24 recovery seed and passphrase should be in very dark place and separated location as your Ledger devices.

Personally speaking for myself bc I own a ledger nano s. Your keys don't ever leave the device until you humanity import them into a software wallet or better known as a mobile or hot wallet. It's not that I trust Ledger because there is no trust in crypto. People need to take a step back and relearn to use a hardware wallet. I feel that more education is still needed but you're doing a great job crypto dad!

I connect mine to metamask but that's not importing the seedphrase. Is that what you're talking about? Or do you mean actually recovering the wallet from on an online wallet using the seed phase?

@@investing1223 if your using a hardware wallet the seed phrase never left the wallet. Now if your trying to connect your hardware wallet to metamask. Metamask will scan your device for activities and import it to the interface. Again the private keys never left until you humanity entered the private keys to metamask wallet than that's when you compromise yourself. Metamask has an opinion to scan hardware wallets like ledger and tezor.

They dont have the ledger nano s anymore I don't think the ledger nano s plus is the same as the regular s. I think there was a reason they dont make the ledger nano s anymore. Those lucky enough to have got them I believe have the best security. Thats why they dont offer it anymore but thats just why I'm thinking they "discontinued" it who knows 🤔 🤷

Yes, if you hold down both buttons for a few seconds, you’ll enter the command center. What you’re gonna wanna do is scroll over to settings, and then you’ll navigate using the right button over to “security” in security,There is a pin lock and a screensaver menu selection. In both of those I go in and set them to never, that way it never goes into sleep mode. Just remember to disconnect your device when you’re finished using it so no one can walk along and manage your crypto. 😊

Quick question: Do you have to be signed into ledger live and connected to the internet to complete the setup. Or can u do the set up of passphrase on the ledger by just simply plugging it into any laptop as long as there is power source to the ledger.

You just restore the device as usual and then go through the exact same steps in this video only this time there will be existing accounts since you created the passphrase already. Just make sure you use the exact same passphrase you used before. That is why I recommend that you write it down.

The PIN code used for opening your Ledger will never be needed to recover 24 recovery seed or passphrase account. The pin gets deleted when you reset a Ledger and does not be stored in the blockchain like the recovery seed and passphrase.

All you have to do is a restore, and then repeat everything in this video to regain access to an existing passphrase. Instead of creating a new passphrase, you simply use the one you already have.

When you are in ledger live will you see both the Base Account and the PP Account? Couldn't the person who had you under duress see all your assets? Watched to the end to answer my own question.

Yes you can see all the accounts once created but you can delete them afterwards and they will be gone. The crypto stays safe on the blockchain and under duress nobody will have a clu unless the sit down whit you and add all the accounts back but then you will have to give them the second pin for passphrase account, and that’s something we will not talk about offcourse to nobody 😅

Another Ledger debacle just announced by Ledger. Apparently there’s a way to sign using “clear signing” instead of “blind signing”. Can you help to understand how to set this up?

21:58 when you said “enter normal PIN”. Do you mean the base PIN (or PIN#1) on your paper? So we would never used PIN#2 unless we want to change/get to Passphrase configuration?

Correct the base pin #1 is for the base configuration. Pin #2 is for the passphrase configuration

Can the Pass Phrase account be recovered in any wallet other than the ledger, with the 24 words Recovery phrase + its 1 associated Passphrase. example: If I loose my ledger (or ledger goes out of stock/bankrupt etc) and I don't have any access to a new ledger for days, and in an emergency I want to access my funds of my "PASSPHRASE ACCOUNT" through a software wallet. will that be possible? I have some thoughts on that. They may not be entirely accurate, but this is my thinking. If you're using the set temporary option, a would-be hacker or cracker would have to try huge variety of combinations (uppercase, lowercase, digits, special characters) to hack your passphrase. Whereas if you were simply using the attach-to-pin they would only have to worry about cracking and 8 digit numerical pin. Another issue that some people have brought up is that, if you have done the attach-to-pin method, then you have effectively saved your passphrase somewhere in the device so that it can be implemented when you enter your secondary pin. Now I'm assuming that this passphrase is stored cryptographically, but the idea that it's saved somewhere would encourage me to use the "set temporary" method instead. However, it is extremely tedious to enter your passphrase on the device. The set to pin method is much, much, much easier to access your alternate configuration So there's that.

Crypto Dad I have one more question please, at one point in the video when you setup the passphrase you say make sure you'v entered the correct passphrase before confirming because if you have to recover your passphrase you will be royally screwed. Can I ask why is this? because even if you have to recover your device at this point your crypto is on the base account so you don't need the passphrase or even if you made a mistake you wouldn't have lost your crypto because you can just restart your device enter the base pin and your crypto would be there . Would I be correct?

If you store crypto using the passphrase, a recovery will not be enough to gain access. You will need recover AND the passphrase.

Hey. Great video. Let's say Ledger can see my seedphrase but not my passphrase. I'm safe. No one but me can access my funds. But, let's say that for some reason, in a month Ledger goes out of business and Ledger Live app won't work on pc or mobile. How will I be able to access my wallet which is created using the passphrase, hence the 25th word? As far as I know, all the other wallets only support 12 or 24 seephrase combination. Thanks

there are other wallets that support 24 word seed phrases and passphrases. You can restore to those. Trezor, Keepkey, Ngrave, are a few.

How do you feel about the security of other hardware wallets that may not offer passphrases? Example, dcent or trezor? Just curious your opinion.

Please help! My situation: i have created the passphrase and secret account (with my assets) a while ago. For some reason I hv forgotten the passphrase so I created a new passphrase (with new pin and acct) and hope to transfer the funds from first secret acct to second) only knowing the first secret acct pin is no longer valid!! what should I do as my funds are still in the first secret acct? thank you much if you could shed light. I didn't know the pin for first secret account would be overwritten once I hv created a new passphrase?! I can still "see" my account on ledger live just can't move funds out of it since my pin is no longer valid~~

Hi Rex. You mentioned in 30:45 about transfering ETH, is it safe to transfer all? Or are you suppose to leave enough behind to cover transfer fees? In a situation where you are no longer using ledger, and plan to move everything (ethereum) to a different crypto wallet, can you just transfer all (max) safely? Or will ETH get stuck because not enough to cover transaction fees? how does that work exactly. Also does the same apply for bitcoin and other crypto as well?

You should always leave some Ethereum in a wallet for fees if you have ERC20 tokens in the wallet. If you have moved all of your tokens out, you can empty out the Ethereum. It's not the Ethereum that gets stuck, it's the ERC 20 tokens. Bitcoin does not have sub-tokens (well there are ordinals now... but that is another subject). There are also other Cryptos that have sub-tokens like Cardano, Polygon, BNB. All of these types of crypos use the main to crypto for fees so you have to make sure there is some in the wallets if you have sub-tokens.

@00:20:05 Question Rex....if someone is standing over you w a gun and you logg in LL they will see both accounts, the one w the initial pin w their affiliated accounts w balances AND the 2nd one w the 2nd pin (the PP) w their accounts w balances.....at that time you cannot say this is all I got, cause they will see indeed what you got. Now you said you just hide the PP accounts and they will not be visible in LL...but here it comes now....the bad guy will look at the transaction history of your initial pin affiliated accounts and they will know something is wrong. So this video will only work fullproof with a new device!

I covered those concerns in the "Additional Security Considerations (Account Management)" 38:57 I know it is a long video! Long story short: to be foolproof, you would indeed need to create a new base (or diversion) account from scratch with no large outgoing transactions.

It is just my opnion not to be mean, but looking at the thumbnail or watching the whole video you only state my opinion at the last few minutes. In other words, during the video I already asked myself 'what about the transaction history in the initial accounts' and I had to wait until the very end to understand it is not foolprove. @@chullotm1970 Yes, I totally understand. Actually, the thought did not occur to me until the end. You could buy/use a new device, or you could do this: 1. Add passphrase 2. Transfer all crypto to a PP configuration. 3. Delete original accounts. 4. Create new decoy accounts and fill them with some decoy crypto. That way, you would not need to spend the money on a new device. Thanks for pointing that out.

After funding your passphrase accounts you can safely delete them in Ledger Live along whit the transaction history. The only transaction history will be in the original account but they see only some crypto send to a random wallet adres. When they don’t know for sure I believe nobody will have you hostage for very long time. Hopefully not 😢

There is no way to "attach" a passphrase to an existing wallet. When you enter a passphrase, you basically create a new wallet with a different master private key. After that, you can transfer your assets from the base account(s) to the passphrase account(s)

You can always delete accounts from Ledger Live (Ledger) but they only being hided. Once a account is added the will live forever on the blockchain whit or whiteout crypto in that account.

Anyone can "see" your transactions on the blockchain. But only you can move/mange your wallet because only you have the device (private key) that is how crypto works

You would just set up a new device and then follow the steps up to point 14:00 in the video. Then you would create new accounts. In that scenario you would not need to worry about transferring from your base accounts. However, it might be smart to create some decoy accounts.

If your crypto funds are on the passphrase account and you went to transfer them to a new hardware wallet like d'cent for example because your current ledger gets destroyed or lost, how exactly do we do that? because the funds wont be on the orignal account under the 24 word seedphrase do the other hardware devices allow us to enter 25 words?

Yes, the wallet that you’re moving to would need to support passphrases. Some do some don’t. I don’t think the D’cent does. Of course you could always just do a wallet to wallet transfer once you’re in the passphrase configuration

It’s always better to have 2 ledger devices so that it’s always possible to fast do a recovery of your accounts. Even when this means to temporarily reset the second ledger device, offcourse you need to be sure you did safe the 24 recovery seed along whit the (when used there) passphrase so you can set it back up after the debacle 😅

Yes, even passphrase-protected accounts are transparent on the blockchain (at least for most cryptos) but your private key is definitely secure (as long as you don’t forget your passphrase)

Yes, exactly When you restore a ledger device, even though it holds the master private key, it does not remember any of the apps that you had on there before. So you’re going to have to manually search for them by going through the “add account” process. That is, of course, if you’re installing it on a brand new machine. In many cases, you might need to restore your device, but your Ledger Live desktop is still intact. In that case after the restore, you simply need to go to each account and do a test receive. This will perform a hardware check to make sure that your hardware device is back the correct configuration. It will also automatically install the appropriate app as you’re running the check for example, when you go to your bitcoin account and click receive, make sure your restored device is connected and the pin is entered. Ledger Live will connect to your device and search for the bitcoin app if it doesn’t find it, it will automatically install it for you and then do the hardware check.

All three of those types use an Ethereum account/wallet. Simply enter your PP configuration and choose “add account” then choose Ethereum.

How do we know ledger could not get our passphrase ?

Hello, about the last part of the video, if you delete the Bitcoin Main wallet, does it not lose the transaction history? If yes, then we send Bitcoin from Bitcoin Main wallet to Bitcoin PP wallet and then delete Bitcoin Main wallet and again "install" it and it will appear without history. Am I right? You can remove and add accounts in Ledger live. But they won't lose their transaction history. The history will still be there when you re-add

New ledger firmware update has again come up ver 2.2.2. It has made some part of the OS code related to Ledger Recover open source. Safe to Update?

How does Ledger Live generate the address for PP when you are not in that configuration? I thought that addresses are based on the private keys, which are obviously not available when the ledger Nano X is in the base configuration. In other words: how does it generate addresses without a hardware check?

The master private key is stored on the ledger device and is always available for generating addresses or new accounts. When you set a passphrase, it simply creates that new configuration based on the existing master private key and your passphrase. This configuration will be available until you disconnect your advice.

Yes, you would simply restore to the new device and go through the exact same process you did to set up the passphrase attached to the pin. Just make sure you use the exact same passphrase on the new device. The crypto will still be there, of course.

Well, it’s a bit tricky, but just remember the passphrase is tied to the device. However, the device itself is already paired up to your mobile app. All of the configuration is done on the device. That’s where you enter your passphrase. once you have done that you should be able to create new accounts in the mobile app that are based on the passphrase configuration since you already have the device paired, the trick is making sure you know which accounts are tied to the passphrase and which accounts are tied to the base configuration. The mobile app does not allow you to name the accounts as they are being created, But once you have an account set up, you can go in there and edit the name, so for example, you could create a bitcoin account based on the passphrase configuration and then go into the app and rename it bitcoinPP or something like that. For the passphrase protected accounts it might make sense to delete them so that a casual observer won’t see them. only re-create them every time you have entered the passphrase on your device. That way they stay secret.

Easily add and remove accounts in ledger live. All you have to do is right click on the account and choose edit account and then delete to remove it. It won't be gone. It'll just not be showing up in ledger live anymore.. You can easily re-add it as I demoed in the video.

A fair point. Although I do agree that the Ledger interface for entering a long and complicated passphrase using a ledger device is indeed wonky and difficult. (The Ledger STAX implements this feature much, much better) I believe the length of the video is totally my fault. I tend to do demonstrations as if I were teaching in a classroom and speaking to people with no knowledge. It's basically just my style. Some people find it helpful, others would rather view a short overview. I admit I'm a bit of a dinosaur on KZread these days.

If I have a brand new ledger how would I add the seedphrase with the passphrase accounts? Would the new ledger that I'm putimg my old seedphrase in know that there is a passphrase associated with that seedphrase?

You just add the 24 seed phrase normally. Then in the settings (Security>Passphrase) you type in your EXISTING passphrase by attaching to pin (or setting a temporary one), just like when you type a new passphrase to create a new account, but here you type your EXISTING passphrase. Then login with that new pin to access your passphrase account. All your 24 word seed phrase + Passphrase should be the same as before.

Yes exactly. the Ledger interface always acts like you are setting a new passphrase. It should say "set new or existing" passphrase. This is a source of confusion when dealing with passphrases on the Ledger device.

Unfortunately many people will loose their crypto only by screwing up the safe store off their 24 recovery seed. There will be even more people who will loose their assets after activate and fund the passphrase account. That’s haw secure the passphrase account is 😅

You can always add a passphrase once you have your ledger accounts set up. Just remember that once you're in the passphrase configuration, you will need to create new accounts to store behind the passphrase. Basically, once you have entered the passphrase, it's like you're using a completely different device that needs its own accounts. If you wish to manage your existing accounts, all you have to do is disconnect the device and reconnect it without entering the passphrase, and you'll be in the base configuration.

Very nice. But for eg let's say I reset my ledger device...I enter my seed, I get my base accounts...what about the accounts that are protected by the passphrase? how do you recover those?...there is no way right?

All you have to do is repeat the passphrase setup to gain access to the passphrase-protected assets. (after the restore)

Would this be with a brand new passports but once that section is activated the hidden accounts would be discoverable. So loss of your 24 word seed phrase would still lose access to hidden wallets on the new device if someone new what they were doing right? So this is about in person deniability under duress?

Did the passphrase account only available at Ledger Device? or it can also be recover from other brands device that support the same coins?

Is it possible to change the phrases passwords in ledger so that no-one can know the new password phrases , if i am hacked?

You can't change your seed phrase without doing a full device reset. But then you would need to transfer your crypto to the new accounts/config. You can always use a different passphrase, but again you would need to transfer your crypto assets to the new accounts/config. There is no way to simply edit/change a passphrase on an existing configuration

Hello CryptoDad, I am total nervous, because they could get my coins on Ledger and Metamask. What would you suggest to secure the still connected coins that are connected to metamask and ledger? I want to avoid them stealing too!!! I am total shocked, really! Thnaks a lot!!!

If you forget your passphrase pin, then you lose access to those coins.

Instead of making an alternative "passphrase" account, can you just add a passphrase (25th word) to your current/main account, just for extra security? That way even if someone gets your 24 word seed phrase, they would still need the passphrase that you just have memorized and not written down anywhere? Then i only need to remember one word that I chose myself, instead of trying to memorize 24 random words.

Adding a passphrase does not protect the crypto that is in the base configuration. You’re not just “Adding“ security to your existing crypto. You must move crypto into the passphrase configuration like I showed in the video.

You got things mixed up! You never add an 25 word to the 24 recovery seed! It’s misleading term unfortunately and in fact you create a whole new area next to the recovery seed account and the new area can only exist when the 24 recovery seed account is created again on for instance a new hardware wallet.

I just realized that my ether and dogecoin sent out from my ledger. The only thing I did was update my ledger . It is wierd because I have the rest of coins. Any idea what could of happen?

If you see outgoing transactions in your ETH and DOGE wallets that you did not initiate, then your wallet may be compromised. If the accounts are simply missing, just go to the Accounts section on the left and click the "add account" button on the upper right side. Choose ETH and follow the instructions (i.e. connect our device and open the Ethereum app). You should find your ETH account. Then do the same thing for DOGE.

I cant transfer eth coins from coinbase account to my ledger without updating the firmware. Is there a work around this?

No, you need to update your firmware if you are using Ledger. However, you could also restore you 24 word seed phrase to a different wallet.

Blockchains are public. Anyone can see them. Unless you are using privacy coins like Monero or Zcash. They can't necessarily see your ledger live directly, they can only examine the individual blockchains of the crypto you own.

I thought the 24 word phrase are your keys and if that devise gets destroyed or lost your able to buy another ledger punch in your 24 word phrase and your crypto should be there.

You have to recover your device, and then enter the passphrase. So someone that has your seed cannot access your crypto, even if they do a restore. They must also know your pass phrase, which, of course only you know.

Well, first, you'll get a new device and restore it using the seed phrase that you wrote down when you set up your original device. Then you will simply create the same passphrase again on the new device, and you will have access to all of the Crypto.

You can access passphrase-protected configurations using Metamask (there is a place to enter passphrases when you connect your hardware device)

Metamask does not support Bitcoin so those will never show up in there. You need a hardware wallet like Trezor or Ledger second device offcourse.

Tangem wallet is great. I've been using it, but it really can't replace my ledger Nano X. There's a lot of cryptos that I hold and a lot of 3rd party wallets that I've got set up that are not compatible with Tangem. So I kind of used them in parallel.

Ledger's code isn't fully open, so there's no way to be sure their firmware can't export your passphrase too (or the key created by it). People need to stop assuming things when they talk about how hardware wallets work, especially Ledger. If the code isn't 100% open source, you can't know for sure the device is truly safe.

@@ozb10 Prove that Ledger's key extraction code can't extract a passphrase too. Don't quote Ledger. They've been lying to their users, so their word can't be trusted. Prove it. There's a saying in crypto: "Don't trust. Verify." Can't prove it? Can't verify it. Can't verify it? Can't trust it. I see a lot of people trying to make excuses for Ledger. Once Ledger's code gets hacked, they'll regret sticking with them.

Ouch that's a bummer. While you still have access to your device, I would recommend that you get a new hardware wallet. Make sure you write down the seed phrase of the new wallet and store it in a safe place. And transfer your assets to that.

Ledger does not have access to your seed phrase. Even if you use their recovery service, which I don't, it is encrypted and only you can initiate the restore process.

I went to great pains to explain the difference between the passphrase and the seed phrase. I also had longer a discussion about clarifying the terms: seed phrase, passphrase, password (for Ledger Live) and PIN for the device. I had to cut this discussion because the original video ran 50 minutes long! I always try to clarify myself when recording but end up having to trim a lot of my additional comments out during editing. I apologize if the end result was not a clear as it should have been

@@CryptoDad I think you are making my point. It is not a ‘seed phrase’. It is a ‘recovery phrase’. Throughout the talk you used language casually. I did say, the effort was well intentioned. Lastly, there seemed to be no structure to the content. It rambled. :-)
