I'm a retired paramedic. One thing I didn't skimp on was my trauma shears. I had 3 pair of German made shears. I always carried a pair of cheap bandage scissors on me, just in case a nurse asked to borrow my scissors. Nurses know that paramedics always have scissors on them. Paramedics know that nurses usually want to borrow your trauma shears to cut paper. I got tired of asking what they wanted to cut with them, and then arguing over why paper was bad for them. That's why I carried the cheap bandage scissors. Then everyone was happy. I wasn't entirely convinced that paper would really dull them that badly, but I kind of needed them to stay sharp. You need good, sharp scissors to cut through boot leather, when necessary. If it was a biker's boots you cut off, you also needed a good place to hide. LOL!
I’ve been sharpening knives for years having been a meat cutter. From there, everyone I knew wanted me to sharpen their knives. Inevitably, scissors were showing up. I refused an attempt to sharpen them but I always wanted to try. Because of your detailed video, I’ll be prepared for the avalanche of scissor requests from family. Thank you for putting this information together.
40+ years ago, I trained as an upholsterer before I trained as a joiner. We used sharp scissors on a daily basis. We sharpened them by hand as one would a chisel or plane. THEN...out came the 'serra-sharp' scissors; self sharpening scissors designed for the upholstery trade at first but probably found other outlets. They had one straight blade and one serrated blade. They worked somewhat but after extended use, still needed hand sharpening on the straight blade - they were not much good at sliding through fabrics. I now always sharpen scissors as we did back in those old days; make sure they are not slack, have an equal slight curvature on each blade so that they cut from heel to tip and have a very keen edge from heel to tip. They should sound as if they are rasping against each other as you cut - and they should cut cleanly right to the very tip.
Or you can always just get stroppy, and remove the burr that way. When I was a kid, I once sharpened my mother's scissors with a file and an improvised strop. I told her it wasn't perfect because I didn't have good files or a decent strop. A few weeks later, she gave me a good set of metalworking files and a leather strop. She said it was just to say thank you for sharpening the scissors, but the implied message was that sharpening scissors was now one of my tasks around the house. 🤣

Thank you for addressing the sandpaper myth! Great video, very helpful.
How did you know that I just found myself needing to sharpen a pair of scissors? Stop it you mind reader! Thanks for the perfectly timed content.
KZread was made for videos like this. Thank you!
I was desperate after trying several ways to sharpen my scissors, but nothing really worked, until I found this video, and it saved my scissors. Thank you.
I have several antique Universal Shear Sharpeners. The handle is set up for 1X10 stones or files. I was shown how to properly use these. I keep the files clean with muratic acid. For heavy fabric I just use the file. For lighter fabric I finish with a 320 stone. For silk, polyester and chiffon I use a 600.
Great tutorial and I loved seeing the Hand Tool Rescue adjustable wrench in action here! Always makes my day to see little crossovers between the various makers I watch
Glad you confirmed that sandpaper myth as I've heard that a few times over the years!
A fine surface stone does a good job for me , in cleaning the rust or imperfections of each surface that face each other . Enjoyed the tutorial on keeping these handy tools working as they should and learned something in the process ! 👍
Thanks for the explanations... it would be interesting to see a video on manual sharpening (without other devices such as a mini-grinder, etc.) of the small scissors in the manicure kit, especially the part at the tip, where they have a slight curvature due to their "construction" .
So helpful! I was considering purchasing a $90 peice of equipment to sharpen my scissors and knives and found your video. A much better option to try!
Hello Mr Wright I'm Mr Wright also from ne Ohio and enjoyed your content.
I return to this video often. I somehow need/want to sharpen scissors often and I come here for a reminder. Thanks for making this video!
Thank you so much. Ive tried to use scissor sharpening products for years to no avail. Guess what! I've just sharpened ALL my scissors to perfection doing exactly as you said. Bloody perfect. Many, many thanks
I've watched your content for years and I love how far you've come! Awesome work.
1:03 is a great thumbnail, James.
A very good and clear demonstration. Thank you.
i just bought a tormek so i could sharpen scissors lol mainly bought it for lathe tool’s though
Thanks for making great content with practical information about everyday workshop stuff! It has really helped me to dive into incorporating hand tools into my woodworking.
The (W)right video at the right time. Thank you James!
I'm so glad I stumbled on your site! I've been attempting to sharpen all of my various blades and have ruined quite a few using "This is the BEST way and product to sharpen _______", very frustrating. I followed your method and have some very sharp scissors now. Thank you!
Great video :) I got the dmt paddle for my drawknife then ended up using it to sharpen scissors, my axe, spur lathe centers, and even the small circular blades in my electric razor too.

I need to have another go at sharpening my drawknife, I didnt know what I was doing when I last tried.
Thank you for this! I have jewelers files that I literally use for anything, including resin edge filing. Just did a quick few swipes along the edge and my scissors are back to cutting through ribbon without making a huge mess or having me come close to rage quitting! You are a lifesaver. I am also a new subscriber, because as soon as we can set up our permanent studio where we are moving to in a couple months or sooner, I am inheriting all my dad's woodworking tools. The only thing we have to buy is a good lathe, and I have a friend who is going to see about getting that for us when the time is right. ❤
I've wondered how to sharpen my scissors. Thanks for posting.

Thanks for posting this quick and very useful video. I 'inherited' several pairs of old scissors and I like to pick them up whenever I run across them is good condition. I don't know about other people, but it seems you can't have enough of them. Especially in various sizes. Now I know how to keep them in tip top shape.
I was just wondering how to do this as I use scissors often in my hobby art and here you are. Thanks so much!
Very timely video for me . THANKS!
Thank you very much, I went on a journey TRYING to find a place to gave th3m sharpened.
Great and simple tips! Thanks so much!
That's a sharp video. Comment for algorithm
My brother obtained a pair of WISS “inlaid” sheet metal shears that were close to 100 years old, that needed s lot of love. (If you can find some Wiss Inlaid, snap them up, the steel is the best!)I removed the nut and bolt, flattened the faces on my DMT dual diamond plates and then filed the bevel with my diamond files ( a steel file would not touch them!) The nut had been peened over, and removing it stripped the threads so I had to make a new fastener out of an NAS 5/16-24 aircraft bolt and high temperature lock nut. When I finally got them back together, greased and adjusted, they cut thin paper, and close with the sweetest “whisssss” sound. Good for another hundred years of conscientious use. My wife and I trade haircuts and I sharpen those shears with the fine diamond file ACROSS the blade rather than along it. This creates very fine grooves that catch, hold and cut the hair instead of letting it slide out of the tips. When wood is ground into paper pulp, fine bits of mineral end up in the paper that WILL dull scissors. My Dad used to keep my Mom’s sewing shears sharp, and woe to us if we used them on paper!
Thanks for explaining how to sharpen scissors. Great video!
First time I’ve ever heard this. Thank you, I’ll try it.
Thank you. Super helpful. Can't wait to try this technique. Greetings from Paris, France
Yet another interesting sharpening video that has inspired me to try something I have not done before. I generally use mass-market scissors, when I can find ones that are TRUE Left-handed ones. (Many that "imply" that they are left-handed, are merely normal right-handed scissors but with different, supposedly "ergonomic" handles. Unless the blades are reversed, they are still very difficult to use by those of us in their "right" minds 😅. While growing up, all three of we boys knew that any scissors in mother's sewing room were strictly off-limits. Our sister was exempt, because in due course our mother was teaching her about sewing.
I am glad I got you in my feed and I have been watching you for few weeks. Just realized I didn't have subscription but I quickly corrected that. Many thanks for the tips 😊
Informative, easy to digest, to the point. A perfect how to video. Thank you sir.
Thanks for sharing this about the scissors
Another great video that cuts right to the point ✂️
Omg thank you so so much for this video!!! I was so sad that I couldn't continue my projects because my scissors just wouldn't cut well or not at all anymore. I tried the sandpaper method cause I saw it recommend so much, didn't help at all. Today I thought I'll try looking for one more tutorial before I give in and buy new ones and came across yours! Now my scissors are cutting like on day one again!! :D
Great simple video. Thanks for sharing
Nice explanation. I use my Tormek once a year for my wife’s scissors and knives. A lot of fun.

This really helps. I have a bunch of sewing scissors that I can practice on before I touch my good ones.
Thanks for all your help. and your shop looks great
So much stuff has such a "you need to have apprenticed with the old masters from birth" or "you need to have giant machinery" mythos about it. Thankyou for taking yet another thing that is behind a wall of mystical dark arts and saying "here's how you can do it perfectly fine at home"
Nice presentation. Thank you.
Thanks, this is very useful!
Very clear...good job!
thanks it makes sense. I'm going to try it
Thank you for your great video!
Shear genius James!
Great video. Thanks!
Great info, thanks!
I had a pair of Crayola scissors that I sharpened to a keen edge. They worked great. I was surprised at how well they held an edge.
I rarely use expensive, all metal scissors. What I do notice though is that there is a common feature in most common scissors and paper cutters: the blades bend concave towards each other. This helps engage the edges better. If you have cheap stationery scissors with riveted pivots that loosen over time, I recommend you VERY SLIGHTLY bend the blades.
Thankyou. Your video is very useful
Thanks for the great info
