That’s why you buy two blades. Replaced the old with the new. That way you’re ready to get to work. Afterwards, sharpen and save the old blade. Swap out again when needed.

Bought a home last year with 5 acres. Never mowed since I was a kid. The prev owner sold me his JD x384 and mowed it 4 times, and had JD service come pick it up for service and found out it was almost $300 for an oil change and the kit is about $37 and new blades are around $60. So $200 more. I decided this year to spend the $200 on everything to do it myself and then it is only $100 season for maintenance kit and blades if I screw up sharpening them. After one mowing the new blades had absolutely no edge on them and was just beating the grass. Better to learn how to sharpen blades. BTW any lawnmower service is seven weeks behind and another reason to learn to do it yourself.

I have international professional experience and have always believed blades should be optimized for the job. If you're cutting light grass you can afford to have razor sharp blades but if you're into heavier growth and tougher circumstances a more dull edge is important because sharp blades will deform too easily radically altering their cutting ability. The factory Edge is basically perfect because it's not so sharp it's weak thus will deform too fast I've always just passed them over a nice big bench grinder a few times to clean up the edge and get back to as close as I can to factory but I'm always tempted to put a finer angle on it and frankly do if I'm really caught up and the mowing is easy however if I think I've got heavier growth I'm going to just get back to that factory Edge

I bought one of those wobble balancers. I got the metal one. And I think they are just junk as there is too high a margin of error. As I found the blade can slide around a little on top of the balancer giving you different readings. At the home on the cheap, the best method I think is the nail or screwdriver method. I'd say that should put you in the ballpark as it won't be perfectly balanced even if it shows it is, but hopefully it'll be within range of acceptable. The best would be those magnetic balancers that are mounted on the wall. If you take your blades to a shop to get sharpened, make sure they have a magnetic wall balancer to check balance. Otherwise, you might as well just sharpen and check at home. Which would pay itself off anyways since you wouldn't be paying a shop to sharpen them.

Actually, dull totally round edged blades cut well. How? The grass slams into the blade surface at high velocity and flattens there, and then the coefficient of friction won't let it just slide off. But since the blade ain't stopping, the grass is then torn off a bit below. Therefore, sharpening blades is overrated.

Yeah, I'm near 55yo, had probably 4 or 5 mowers over the last 40 years, never sharpened or changed a blade on any of them and have occasionally hit curbs, rocks, pieces of metal people thrown in the yard, as I live on a corner in a big city, but then again I am not concerned about having my yard featured in Better Homes and Garden Magazine or winning an award. I just want my grass cut every couple weeks so it doesn't become a knee high jungle. It looks about the same as 99% of other peoples yards that I see. Since my current Honda push mower is over a decade old I think I might just spend the $20 for a new blade and see if it really makes much difference. Definitely not knocking anyone from sharpening theirs though. If you have the time, tools and inclination, it probably will be easier on your motor, cut smoother & save on a new blade cost.
