Thanks for keeping language clean! I watch your videos with my kids. Learning a lot Thanks! Awesome artist and appreciate your fun attitude!!!!
Suggest, tighten the chain up for sharpening. Helps prevent rocking in groove, through stroke. So edge made more consistent & tend to run smoother. Was advised, better to file off bar then wash debris off, give oil bath, drip, refit. That way helps avoid filings mixing with bar oil to make grinding paste. Components last longer. Save money, buy more toys!

Ryan...HERE'S YOUR TIP OF THE WEEK Buddy....Try one of those new 2 in 1 sharpeners made by stihl.(a knockoff of Pferd's original design) They work frikkin awesome, they are idiot proof, super simple, and they file your rakers at the same time. Price is around $45. i am surprised not 1 person mentioned them in the comments below. It is 2 round files and a flat file all in 1, handle on each end. They have been around a couple years now. By the way...I'm brand new to carving...just started watching videos...mostly from you and Jordie and completed a 4ft tall wood spirit in about 4hrs. It turned out super cool. Thanks for all the vids. Your artistic talent is wicked, inspiring and instructional. Love your eagle piece you done for the weather lady. Keep up the good work, cheers from southern Ontario

Ryan, we angle down a bit on our longer chains and bars, simply to file out the gullet a bit (just thought i would explain the downward angle filing). but yeah it is not a necessity on a smaller saw and chain. Great vid as always and good tips for beginner filers.

@@RyanCookCarvin were I am in Scotland is same latitude as Saskatchewan BC we get about 8 inch off snow per year on average ,I think they get a wee bit more 😎
That little burr is the chromium plating on the tooth, it's totally harmless...the chromium plating is what makes the tooth sharp, when you comb the softer bedding metal into the harder chromium plating. That burr will not hurt anything, it breaks off the minute the tooth hits the wood, no need to roll the file across the tooth, but to each their own. Of course I file with one hand using my thumb as a giude,and have never used a handle on a file, and barely ever touch the rakers, and us climbers deep file all the time...lol... good vid man, it would be cool some day to compare notes and filing techniques... any time I've sharpened other peoples saws, they said they've never felt a saw cut till that moment...lol...

Wicked dude!. Kiddin me? I'm glad you put it out there, we all learn somethin new every day, dont hide stuff outta fear, or bashfullness...whats important is that is what works for you, you know by now, you put so many hours on the saws, I'm sure you learned quick like I did...Thanks for checkin my vids bro!I'm not more accomplished, just been in it longer, learnt so many different things about filing and sharpening, different chains need different love, for different uses...it dont hurt nuthing to get rid of the burr, nor does it to leave it was my point...lol... take 5 carvers, ask them to show you how to sharpen a saw, you might see ten different ways, and learn different things from them all. That's how we do!😁😁😁 love havin you here on tuby with us all! Great seein that ryan energy! It's nice to see you take time to chill with us and reply!

Been sharpening my own chains for like 40 years. Some good tips here. If the saw cuts well when your done, then well done, if not try again, again, again. These days watch more you tube , try again. Never over use a dull chain its a waste of your time and will destroy your saw.
@RyanCookCarvin

Great point!
Have you ever tried filing into the tooth. Put your saw in a vice and use the chain brake to lock the chain ,and take the slack out of the chain . Filing into the tooth leaves little or no burr on the tooth. I find the chain stays sharper longer. Enjoy your videos and keep on smiling.

Is it ok to use a simi chisel chain or do I want full chisel please let me know 🙏
Filin an MSA 250 sucks. because it is electric, apparently it won't freewheel. So, after you sharpen a short section, you have to mark another tooth to keep track and pulse the trigger to get it to where you can reach more chain.
I love the echos man the 620 is awesome saw do you get your saws ported or anything

Hi Ryan - How long should a chain last if filing properly. Do you get an average amount of hours on a chain. ? Is that a special clamp fpr your jaw horse for holding your saw? thanks

If you want but I think that it heats up metal.
Ryan I’m assuming u use the flat file for lowering the rakes. Is that right. I just didn’t catch the video where u lowered the rake or did I just miss that part.
@RyanCookCarvin

I suggest that. For myself I do it with my finger sander. But it’s not perfect an takes a lot of practice and wasted chain. Flat file works best for consistency
Cheers again, I was wondering when you are going to do a lion carving. I did a small lion for my second carving and screwed the face up twice, so I was hoping you would do a video soon. Cheerd

Just learning to do some chain saw carving. My teacher is going to show me how to sharpen chain but when using his saws I see that he has completely removed the rackers. I heard in your video you prefer a low rakers. I imagine that low rakers or no rakers makes the saw very aggressive. Any comments would be appreciated.
Thanks for a great video. quick question. I've learned that the chain should be much tighter but I see a lot of chainsaw carvers with hanging loose chains. How come?
@RyanCookCarvin

carving bars dont have sprockets which makes tips heat up. if to tight the tips will blow out and also allows chain top flex when doing swooping cuts
