How to Sharpen Brush Hog Blades Without Taking Them Off the Bush Hog

Комедия

When you can't get your blades off the brush hog, or simply don't want to bother, here is a safe method for getting under the brush hog to tune up the blades. The grinder I use in the video is under $30 on Amazon: goo.gl/KKsvdX
No special grinding wheel is needed or anything like that. Note that you will want to take the blades off the brush hog every few years just to balance them and make sure they're the same weight. But I haven't done this in a while.

So glad you did the close up of the blade. I was watching and saying to myself, "really want to see what that blade looks like once done," and voila... you did. Thanks!

I have figured out over the years it doesnt take much of an edge at all on brushhog blades to cut well. Sometimes I think we could be swinging ball bats under there and it would be fine lol...

Ya know, you're darn right about that ... the other thing is that a sharp edge dulls quickly back there. It's really the speed of the steel that seems to do the trick.

You have a darn good rotary cutter in the Woods cadet. Hopefully you were able to get the bolts out and replace the blades. I'd be getting concerned about them being unbalanced.

Yeah, it's taken some attention and tuning over the years, but is running even better now. There is always work to do maintaining this old rig, but it's ready for another season of cutting and clearing!

yeah, keeping a lawnmower blade balanced is key ... which is why I use a simple sharpener, not a grinder

Bad advice! Never sharpen/bevel the flat side of the blade. Those blades are most likely way out of balance too being never removed from the rotary cutter after grinding. Great way to eventually trash your main bearing from unbalanced blade vibration. You really should make an attempt to do the job CORRECTLY and remove the blades from the cutter, then sharpen the correct side and weight blades to be no more than a few ounces from one another.

I can see your point, but at the same time the hog has been running smoothly for 50 years now. Perhaps at the end of this season I'll replace the blades ... thanks for commenting

I have a 7 foot woods from the 80s that has its second set of blades on it. They never have been off except to change them. The mower has its original seals and bearings. You have to pay attention to how much you take off each blade and not try and grind out the nicks. I'm more cautious on lawnmower blades, but not so much on these heavy duty mowers.

It takes 3 minutes with no sweat if you lift it up by the 3-point and stick a couple of jack stands under it.

You're sharpening the wrong side of the blade. Everything about your method is fine except for that. I do exactly what you do, but I sharpen the "top" of the blade, as it was from the factory.

@@metaspencer If you sharpen the top side instead of the bottom side, it will cut better. When the blade is sharpened on the bottom side, it will tend to ramp up on small saplings, and also push the grass downward more, cutting less of it.

@@metaspencer One thing about only sharpening the upper side, is the blade will want to dig into the ground a bit more, and dig into any logs that you may hit, so I guess more care to avoid doing these things is warranted.

Adam Gipson you're so smart! Except, it's not a BUSHhog, which is a brand name. The proper term for a generic brush mower is commonly called a BRUSHhog. Keep scratching that head...

It’s a BRUSH HOG! Not a BUSH HOG! BUSH HOG is a brand of BRUSH HOG Dummy. Nobody has ever bought one of these just to cut bushes. Google “BUSH HOG” and you will find a video about how the “BUSH HOG” company got its name. You should know what you’re commenting about before you make a comment Junior. Some of us 60 year olds know a little more than you do! 😏
