HONESTLY lol. Been irritating me so much ruining my edges when stropping and sharpening, was thinking it would be good if you uploaded a spoon hook video and you have done one in less than 24hrs........OUTSTANDING mate. bless

I've been meaning to film a sharpening video with Nic for some time so am chuffed we were able to do that. Hope this video helped and happy sharpening my man! ~Peace~
Great video Zed and thanks to Nic for his knowledge. As a sharpener I’m asked daily ‘how often should I get my knives sharpened?’. My answer is whenever you think it needs doing, whenever you’re not 100% happy with the cut. It’s just too subjective and personal use varies massively. Personally I’d be really interested in the process you use to achieve the outer convex curve and the finish, I occasionally have to fix chips etc so requires more stock removal than usual. Perhaps we can have a chat at Spoontown if you have time. Thanks again. (Sam’s Sharpening)

Great insight on the frequency of sharpening Sam, as you know yourself it's a difficult thing to answer as there are so many variables to consider. Alas i'm not attending Spoontown or any events this year, that being said, we're long overdue a catch up dude ~Peace~

@@Zedoutdoorsshame you won’t be there, it would be great to catch up at the wood maybe? Let me know if you get down this way and we can meet up!
Awesome video, I save it to study how to sharpen my Nic tools, thanks for sharing!

Thats awesome to hear and thank you kindly my friend ~Peace~
Sharpening is a art in it's self. And when or how often is very difficult to say because it depends on so many factors. Type of steel and what you're cutting... the list goes on. I'm still learning and I'm 58 and been sharpening knives all my life lol I guess I'm slow lol

Indeed yes, I played devils advocate asking that question on video because I hear that from many beginner/intermediate carvers ~Peace~
I want to buy a couple of Nick's knives. Very nice...

R2 Wood here... Fantastic content as always Mr Z. 50,000 grit made me chuckle as some folks said I was excessive using a mere 7000...lol

As mentioned in this video, sharpening is always a minefield to talk about and everyone has their own take on it as you know all too well yourself! ~Peace~
Hey there Nick. You might be looking for alternatives for the PFTE rods and blocks. As good as they may work with self adhesive lapping films, all PFAS (including PFTE) are suspected to be detrimental to health and the environment. Thanks for the detailed instructions.

There not really space to go into this, but yes I agree that use of PTFE should be limited as much as possible, yet we commonly use PTFE tape to seal joints in our water supply, and cook with non stick pans. The blocks in the video are actually polypropylene, that was an error on my part that wasn't caught in the edit. I thought of doing a video on instances where only PTFE will work and why I still sell it, but it would be very niche.

Great video and got to see range of his tools set out on the paper relative to each other - am I right in thinking the order was Twca, finishing, fawcett, roughing and finally micro spoon knives?
@Zedoutdoors

Indeed yes well spotted Simon, those were actually orders ready to be posted out! :-) ~Peace~
I don't know if it's right or not, but on the Mora and similar hook knives that are not hollow on the inside...I grind a little hollow with a dremel. Never on a Nic blade! But it does seem to help on other less sophisticated blades.

If you're referring to the tools he makes as 'Nic Westermann' there is a waiting list you join on his website, worth checking out the video i did with him last year where he explains how his ordering process works. In terms of tools that are available to purchase now, they are all on the 'Hewn & Hone' website which i've linked to in the description ~Peace~
