How to sharpen a French Opinel Carbone or Inox Pocket knife?

How to sharpen a French Opinel Carbone or Inox Pocket knife?
If you are like me you too may get frustrated when the tool you pick up is blunt drives you mad. There is no need as the Opinel is so easy to sharpen. The Blade is shaped with zero grinds although you can add a 30-degree micro grind i choose not to and purely follow the flats of the blade.

Yeah my sound all the way turned up and still had a hard time understanding. You are British with a lovely accent but the music makes it quite hard to follow then.

The edge is already thin enough without doing a full flat grind. I prefer a micro bevel, it’s a stronger edge.

Opinel recommends using a 15°-20° angle to sharpen. If you do sharpen at those angles and then strop you will achieve a convex angle like they come with stock giving you that “opinel sharp” there’s also 50 different ways to skin a cat and none of them are wrong it’s just different.

If you get a usb microscope and check your edges on a 500x zoom. You'll see to never ever use figure 8 strokes again in comparison to 90° strokes (can be tilted a bit, that doesn't really matter) But figure 8 strokes make horrible deep cross gauges resulting in an equally sharp but much more fragile edge than a clean 90° pattern. (Also showing that yes, you do really want fine, very fine stone and strop finishes, it makes the edge far more uniform on the micro/cutting level, thus far less likely to rip out chunks. Of edge on a microscopic level.) Is this all necessary? no. Not really, wood isnt too diffucult to work nicely with a dull edge (dull edge depending on which industry you look at) Also this is not how opinel ever intended you to sharpen the knife. It's NOT a full flat grind to begin with, it is a full convex (with secondary bevel) from the factory. However what works for you, works for you. And I do reckon this opi is incredibly sharp with such a thin flat edge. (Some people on razor shaving forums have modded opi's in the way to make em shave very well) But man is it a delicate edge this way.

@@fishing1335 They are all great knives and cheap. You can get a better edge on the carbon. The only problem I have is if I keep it in my pocket the groove can fill with fluff creating a stop and eventually restricting the blade to open fully. I rectify this by cleaning it with a cocktail stick! But if you are keeping in the tackle box that shouldn't be a problem. Because of the profile of the blade, it still surprises me how sharp you can get this blade.
