    I hope you do more videos. You explained this so well. This is the way I make spaghetti straps too...but I don't enjoy it. Thanks for the tip on dying elastic. I'm trying to decide whether to buy a serger. I've been making costumes for my baton twirler for 14 years on sewing machine.

    Rose Stewart - I couldn’t live without my serger! I have a Juki that I got about 6 years ago for just under $400. It’s worth every penny!

    Really well presented - no excess waffle but still charming and warm in your presentation- now i'm going to check whether I have that stretch stitch capability on my sewing machine ... I subscribed - cheers from Australia

    I just saw your comment again ... if you don't have a stretch stitch, you can always use your zig zag

    Do have a video on how to make elastic to wrap around one leg?

  • @RhinestoneQueenCostumes

    @RhinestoneQueenCostumes

    Жыл бұрын

    I've actually never done that on a costume before. I suspect you can just make a spaghetti strap and attach it to the costume at the beginning point of the wrap then make a closure on the spaghetti strap at the end point so that it can attach to itself where it wraps completely around the leg.

    Thanks! I’m just getting started with dance Leo’s and this was very helpful! If using a serger, do you still finish the strap on the regular machine with a stretch stitch?

  • @RhinestoneQueenCostumes

    @RhinestoneQueenCostumes

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yes. I only use the serger to secure the elastic to the fabric, then finish with a stretch stitch on the regular machine before trimming away the excess fabric. Thanks for watching!

    I love your videos. Any chance you could share how you add a feather trim to the back of a brief? What is the trick?

  • @RhinestoneQueenCostumes

    @RhinestoneQueenCostumes

    2 жыл бұрын

    That's going to be a video one day. For feather fringe, I cut a .5-1" strip of matching lycra and Stretch it as I zig zag it to the ribbon strip at the top of the trim, then I zig zag the top of the strip to the costume. For feather boas, I put my project on a foam board that measures at least as wide as the dancer's hips, then pin the boa on. I then take it off of the board and hand stitch from behind where each pin is located. If you PM me, I'll send you pics of costumes where I used each technique.

    Hi love your videos. Could I ask what kind of foot you have on your machine?

  • @RhinestoneQueenCostumes

    @RhinestoneQueenCostumes

    I just use the standard foot that came with the machine. I know some people like to use a walking foot to sew spandex, but I just use my standard foot.

    Please forgive my delayed response!!! I just found your message! Not sure why it didn't come through to me in Messenger. You're always welcome to PM me if you ever ask a question in the future and don't hear back. I usually respond within 24 hours, so 2 months is not okay! So sorry!! To answer your question, generally, yes - it works with wider elastic. The only thing that may be more difficult is turning curves with wider elastic, but for straight runs, you shouldn't have any problems. Thanks so much for watching!

    I do plan to do something on headpieces, but it will be a while because we'll be moving next month and then I have a very busy costume season. In the meantime ... the product I use is "Fossflex". I cut it to the shape I want, then mold it to fit on a foam head an heat it with a blow dryer or heat gun. It then holds the shape and it can be easily covered with fabric. You can sew through this stuff! It's pretty fantastic!

    @RhinestoneQueenCostumes

    I don't remember where I bought it, but you can google fossflex and find a vendor. It looks felt-like, but has this crazy ability to keep a shape!!

    Please forgive my delayed response!!! I just found your message! Not sure why it didn't come through to me in Messenger. You're always welcome to PM me if you ever ask a question in the future and don't hear back. I usually respond within 24 hours, so a whole month is not okay! So sorry!! My first choice is always to sew in the spaghetti straps at every point of contact. A costume is basically a leotard that's been fancied up a bit, so it should function as a leotard. BUT, when I do need to use some sort of closure device, I use pants hooks and eyes whenever they'll fit, and regular hooks and eyes if I need smaller closures. I usually also add a snap or even some velcro to stop the edge of the strap that's tucked inside the costume from waving about. I know a lot of people use swimsuit hooks, but I haven't found any of those that I like better than the old fashioned hooks and eyes. Thanks so much for watching! Happy sewing!!
