How to sew crumbs (scraps) together

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Watch me start with a pile of scraps and end up with a beautifully colorful tote bag! If you'd like to see how to piece crumbs of fabric together so that you can use all your small pieces of fabric and turn them into wonderful pieces of art, then this is the video for you!
This isn't exactly a tutorial, but I filmed it so you could watch my process from when I start piecing the differently sized fabric scraps together, up until I turn them into a tote bag. You could use this process to make any number of items, such as potholders, table runners, mug rugs, quilts and more. Use your imagination to take your beautiful scraps and turn them into beautiful creations! I hope you enjoy watching me sew!

Aww, thank you! I am sometimes quite shocked with what people comment. I used to leave them all up, but now, I sometimes delete the nasty or negative comments. I guess I don't understand the need to say something negative, instead of just moving to another channel.

I am enjoying this video very much. Thank you for putting it up for us to see. I do enjoy watching and making my own scrap/crumb panels. I think people post negative comments because with the arrival of social media they begin to believe their opinion matters most of all. Instead they are just rude. Again thank youn for posting this great video.

My grandmother made scrap quilts. She sat on a slipper rocker by the oil furnace and piece the top in winter. In summer her quilting frame was set up in her bedroom. The shades down, window open. She’d sit in front of it and quilt in the darkened, cool room. I consider it a great blessing she lived next door to me. She didn’t talk much to anybody so I didn’t talk to her. One day she took a break from piecing, took down her top knot and combed her long white hair with the same combs she used to keep it up with. I was sitting on the floor watching. Uncharacteristically, she stopped, turned and looked right at me and said, “Long hair is a woman’s glory.”

God bless you. I am 80, and although I sewed quite a bit, even supported myself with my sewing for two years, I haven't touched a machine in ages. But now I'd really like to try a scappy quilt because it looks like fun, but I don't have scraps, lol. My second choice is a Jacob's Ladder but for that I'll buy new cotton. Looking forward to a busy winter as I have four great-grandchildren to make quilts for, and I've never tried quilting before. LOL and I thought there would be no more "firsts" for me at this age. :)

Thanks! Yes, I’d gone over a lot of techniques in my 5 part Freestyle Scrap Tote Bag series and so I used this video as less of a tutorial and more for people who wanted to see how I get crumbs put together, start to finish. It’s my #1 question (how to sew crumbs together), so I figured this video would be helpful to those people (my Mom is one of them). I hope you give it a try! Of course as I’m sure you know, you can turn the crumb fabric into anything from a bag, to potholders, to a pillow. Have fun!

So glad I found your channel when Brenda sent us over a couple months ago. I have been enjoying your videos. Yes I have crumb been quilting for about 4 years. Your comment about relaxing you is right on. It is great to see how others do projects so when I can’t sleep at night I turn down the volume and binge. I started with Darlene Michaud. The first thing I learned was the only thing you need to do is have a straight edge. WELLLL from there I evolved I don’t pin with the crumbs as I have my magnet for my seam, but I do press and trim I do sew my triangles together to make a square if they are in my stack. I have learned that pressing open my seams on the blocks with really small pieces reduces the bulk. Finally hit the subscribe button always the like button. Thanks for the refresher. One thing I learned was seeing the corners of the bag and lining together. I have always just tacked the bottom. I like this much better. One tip I leave a handful of pieces big and small to fill in when near the end so I can add to if a little short rather than trimming off to make my blocks. I also try to have only bigger outside edge when almost done for trimming so the seams don’t come to close to the edge after trimming as less of a chance to pull apart after washing .

Hi Connie, and thank you so much for your wonderful comment! To be honest, most times, I don’t pin my crumbs, but since I was filming it to put up on KZread , I thought I should maybe do it. Although sometimes if I want them just right , or just in a certain way, I tend to pin them, but usually not as much as I did during this video, ha ha. I agree wholeheartedly that pressing my seams open allows for less bulk. I’m so glad you subscribed and I really appreciate you taking the time to write to me. Thank you and have a wonderful week!

I found it back in July when I was working on this for my friend and I hesitated, dropping it since I have never really made a video similar to this, and I wasn’t sure how well received it would be, since I spent so much time on just the piecing. Judging by the feedback I’ve received, I’d say that it was well received, and I’m happy that you found it helpful. My friend absolutely loves her bag! Normally, I use all kinds of shapes in my crumb piecing, but since she’s blind, I wanted her to be able to easily feel and distinguish between the shapes easily, so I kept it with rectangles and squarish shapes.

Marie, loved this video! Learned a couple of new things too. Like the idea of serpentine stitch in middle of straps, going to do that on future bags. I don’t quilt as close as you do though, my preference is to quilt enough to keep things together and still have a pleasing pleasing affect. As you often say, “It’s your bag, do what you want”, do love your quilting though. It was not at all boring and I was able to do some hand sewing of my binding to the back of my latest finished quilt. Thank you so much for sharing all your informative tutorials.

Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment. Yes, we all have what we like about each way of doing things. I’m glad you were able to pick up a few things, that’s what I do, too. I take what I like from others and store the rest away, ha ha. The past six or eight bags I’ve made, I’ve been quilting close like that, but I don’t always. Since the friend I made this bag for is blind, I tried to get as much texture as I could into the bag.

I know exactly what you mean, Kelley. Personally, I think most people actually know how to sew crumbs together, but because there is no set pattern or measurements, they might feel like they’re doing it wrong somehow,so they look to us to show them the way that would be correct or right. But, as we know, it’s just like a wild free-for-all, ha ha!

This was a great video this morning. My process of sewing crumbs is very similar to yours. I also love to give them a good press. I find it makes for a much neater finish. You use more pins than I do, and that’s probably why I get a little off kilter at times! And don’t we all wish we could speed up that fast sometimes?! Your finished bag was truly delightful!

  • @MariesScrappyCreations

Thank you, Nancy! As I had just told another commentor, I normally don’t use that many pins when it’s just me, but since I was filming for KZread, I thought maybe I should set a good example, ha ha. I’m really laughing about that, since that’s about the only time that I set a good example… when I’m filming, lol. I agree, that ironing makes a world a difference. I have seen many videos where the KZreadr doesn’t press and it drives me crazy. But then again, I’m always saying everyone should do their own thing. But that’s of course, not counting my OCD, L O L!
