I have done where you move the needle over like you showed. And like you forget to move it over once in a while. I like the painter tape the best.

Hello! I just came across your video while searching "how to scant 1/4 in seam" since I will be starting my first quilt next week. I have to say that you explained this better than all the other videos I've watched on this subject. Thank you so much for the time you took to share how to do this with a beginner like myself. You have a new subscriber!

Really enjoyed all your examples and explanations. The purple vinyl edge stop didn’t work for me when I used dark fabrics. My eyes made the dark fabrics blend in with the dark edge stop and I couldn’t tell where each of the edges were! I didn’t know they made it in orange, so I will get some to try. I’m also going to try the diagonal seam tape and make my own card as you showed. Lots of new options for me! Thank you.

Thank you, some good information. I really like your final tip 👍🏻. I use the cluck cluck tape and painters tape together. On the painters tape I use it with 3 pieces on top of each other so I can have a thick edge for the fabric to run against.

Very good tips. I am a beginner....a couple of questions. How do you know that your plastic ruler is lines up exactly straight before you place the purple stuff or the painter's tape down? Any tips for that? Also, what is that little piece of paper you sewed on before and after the fabric pieces when you were doing your measuring test? And what is the purpose of that? Thanks for your help?

Laurie, I put my needle down on the 1/4” line and line one of the horizontal lines up with it. Then I place my tape down. That little square is a piece of fabric that is sometimes referred to as a leader or ender. I sew on and off it to help control loose threads and to help keep my machine from eating my fabric (pulling it down into the machine). Ask all the questions you want! If I don’t have the answer I will try to find it!

I have to say after watching numerous videos on scant 1/4 and using different tapes to mark the machine, you are the first person to answer the question of how to know the tape, vinyl is straight when lining up on machine. Kudos to you. I am a new subscriber. So nice to just get instruction instead of why I need to purchase the newest gadget.

Valerie, I had a sewing machine that caused my fabric to shift…it pulled it to one side. You might need to have it serviced and ask the repairman about that.
