Incredible to think all clothing was handstitched before the advent of sewing machines. And luckily there are some who will show others how it was done and with such beautiful results! This was such a very interesting and informative video - thank you for taking the time to share your time and talents with us.

I love how you talk about replacing the binding at the hem and being able to adjust sizes if need be. I know that's how the cared for their garments "back in the day", but it is refreshing in the ocean of fast fashion that some people treat their garments with care. It's inspiring me to be more considerate of this as I slowly start to make my own clothes. And thank you for a good tutorial!

It was so happy to see Portugal Folk dress in an english-speaking video. I have been thinking of diving into that aspect of my culture as a renovate my lacking wardrobe, to connect with it better, and thus I have felt even more invigorated to do so, as I watched the video ^^ I simply adore your videos, they are concise, packed with practical knowledge and instructions. It was, as always is, a pleasant experience.

I know that this is meant to mimic a Portuguese rural woman's garment, but it looks very classy to me. Cartridge pleats are used today in judges'' black robes where the sleeves attach to the body of the robe.

When machine stitching a hem facing, there are ways to prevent a horizontal line of stiches. Use a blind hem stitch. It looks like a weird zig-zag with some going wider. To use this you sew most on just the folded facing, but the tips of the wider zigzags go into the skirt fabric. The result is hardly noticable little pricks of thread on the outside. If the threadcolour matches, its really hard to see. I would recommend practicing first, but its fast once you get the hang of it

Beautiful! I had some lovely cartridge pleated items growing up doing reenactments and living history of the early to mid Victorian era... But as a kid, I had no idea how they got the fabric to do that (nor did I want to sit still long enough to learn!) These days, I think that style would just be a fun and comfy everyday maxi skirt. Thanks for the clear images and explanations!

How beautiful that was. I really enjoyed watching it, and it took me back to when I was little and we wore dresses, hand smocked by our mother. The smocking adds something really special. Please could I make a request? Please don’t add music to videos when you’re teaching because if anyone like me has a cognitive disability, it’s very painful. People will comment and tell me to mute, but of course I then live my whole life in silence! I enjoyed your teaching and I didn’t want to miss it. If people really like music, they can add music of their choice, but I can’t subtract it. Hope it’s OK to ask - I don’t find many videos where there’s no added music, but the ones I do, are peaceful and contemplative, which is a lovely thing in this noisy frantic world! Bless you ❤

Thank you for your kind feedback - I'll keep that in mind for my next videos as making my content easy for all audiences to understand is important to me (that's why I always have embedded subtitles on shorts and captions on videos)❤️

Watched this video thinking this would be a fun thing to try after I develop my sewing skills a whole lot more since there's no way this is simple enough for me to tackle right now. Wow! You made it look so much easier than I imagined! I'll have to try one of these soon. That two yard skirt honestly looks beautiful-- that's something I could see myself wearing to work!

Found you through your muslin coffee filter video. I've been wanting to sew myself skirts for forever, roughly this style (although perhaps closer to the one with the petticoat feel ;) ). I'm going to have to try this. Thanks very much for this fantastic tutorial!

I need to check my mother’s traditional Norwegian costume next time she wears it because it has these types of pleats! Mine unfortunately does not, but I love the look they give.

Great tutorial! I'm currently working up the courage to cartridge pleat the skirt of a gauzey-cotton dress, I'm afraid the fabric is not strong enough but am too cheap to fully flatline the skirt :') thanks for your video's, they're v helpful!!!

That sounds like a lovely fabric. Perhaps you could add a strip of sturdy cotton in between the top fold before you sew the rows for the pleats?

I have a smocking pleater. I can put pleats into relatively thin fabric, up to a medium flannel. The pleats are a bit more shallow than hand done.

Love those skirts. Will have to do some testers on fabrics to see how much I'll need and how small to make the pleats. It seems like you did about a 4.8 multiplier of waist size to fabric. With a larger waist, I'll need more fabric to get those beautiful pleats.

If you're working with a thicker fabric like wool, you can get by with fewer pleats due to the thickness of the material. That ratio sounds right - I think adding an extra half panel or panel of fabric is a great idea.
