If a button comes off on your leather coat or jacket, you can try to sew it onto leather clothes yourself. To do this, you need a thimble, a thick durable needle, a large button and a small button.
Note: The thread in the needle must be inserted into four additions.

I used this method, but without the shank, to sew a button on a leather vest that had torn a small hole in the thin leather. The backup button was just the idea I needed! Thank you!

To make it easier to make a shank for a button, you can lay a pencil between the leather and the button

What string should be used for leather button repair?
So exactly how you do it with just any other fabric. But how do you do with creating new holes?
how do you know how long to leave the shank?

The length of the shank depends on the thickness of your overcoat, within 0.5 - .5 cm
I sew it with artificial string but it was a mistake, it didn't hold.Nice to see your string is cotton, well at least most of it. Thanks.

I got the front button but I lost the small back button to my coat is all hope lost. And I don't have a sewing needle will a regular safety pin work?

None it will not work, but you can buy a standard needle and use any small button

Rather annoying not doing a crossover, I followed this to the note but didn't really like how it looks. I don't think I can be quite bothered to do it again though.

You need to make a cross-winding necessarily
You should use a leather needle, the one you are using is for fabric and it gets "attached" to the leather instead of going easily through. Leather needles are not round, they have 3 sides, so they "cut" the leather and make sewing in general, much easier, the same ones are used to sew furs.

Looks to me as if the seamstress is doing the same as I do, which is to use the holes that are already there, instead of making new holes, thereby ruining the leather. If not, it would be very difficult to get the needle through the leather.
