Finally picked mine up today to replace my EOS Mk iii! Loved that camera but I am really looking forward to shooting mirrorless. Thanks for all your videos. Keeping my EF lenses was a huge advantage. Mainly shoot real estate but can't wait for basketball and volleyball season!

The R6 uses both the processor and algorithms from the pro-sports 1D X Mark III body, and Canon say the tracking may be even better. The camera also provides the same AF configuration settings, which lets you select a 'Case' that describes the movement of your subject. These include an 'Auto' case that it supposed to adapt to the subject you're shooting as it detects its movement

I'm interested in these next few R6 videos! Most interested in eye-detect auto focus system as it relates to your experience shooting sports. Also, what would you use for shooting a sport with helmets (e.g. American football) and the athlete's eyes are not always visible. Is there a more-general head-detect option? Thanks for your videos.

Rob. Thanks for all the tips. I set up my R6 to shoot ice hockey yesterday and it was awesome and overwhelming at the same time. I had everything in manual mode and had it all dialed in after a dozen shots or so. Things got tricky with learning to shoot with back button focus while also being able to move the focus point with the joy stick and/or thumb on the screen...Add to that, depending upon from where I was shooting, eye tracking was either really good, or a nightmare...shooting from the penalty box which is at center ice, eye tracking was not so good as player are constantly crossing and not looking toward the camera. However, once I set up at either end behind the net or towards the corner, players are coming straight down the ice with their heads up to look for passes or shots, so it worked much better. My biggest challenge, and I throw this out as a question, with back button focus, my right thumb is occupied. So, how do a use back button focus while using either the joy stick or the screen to move the focus point around?? I need another thumb or two...not sure if the R5 possibly comes with that for the extra $$$ :). I also set it up so that my back button AF does AF only, and then the * button I assigned to turn on and off face recognition. Lastly, I set up the DOF button to toggle through the focus modes (I only set 4 of them...Face recognition, smallest area, the default that you can’t eliminate, and the expanded one)...that’ll take a bit to get used to but I like it!

Thanks Pete. Sounds like you had a great time at the ice hockey. Regarding your focus question I tend to either use centre point, single point focus and not move it around, alternatively I've been using the face detection and letting the camera find the focus itself. Hope that helps. Keep shooting!

@@RobSambles I can agree with you about the single point focus...not used to the focus moving all over the place and still find myself trying to frame the photo! I’ll give it another weekend of game to see if I get used to it. It’s helpful with my son as a goalie to have the focus to one side so I can get him at one end of the photo and the shooters coming in on him from either the left or right, depending upon where I’m shooting from.

Curious to know if BBF was even reconsidered for you when switching over to mirrorless. I did use it for most of my 2-3year journey w/ DSLR (1DX/1DX2) but the electronic lag has me reconsidering when going mirrorless. Finally picked up an R6m2 today. Cheers!

Good video, Rob. You might want to experiment with using HEIF instead of JPEG for sports. The file sizes are about the same and the details preserved in the higher dynamic range (10 bit vs 8 bit) may allow more edit opportunities in post.

Hi Rob, do you have a follow up for this video? I mean, how did it work in sports? Is it good enough for soccer or football as you call it in England? I changed from DXMKII to Canon R5, R6 is a likewise camera as R5 with some more megapixels. Maybe you've made more videos with the R6 in the field of sports? Just curious how that was, greeting, Martin, The Netherlands

Hi Rob, if you have AF configured for eye detect and quickly want to switch to single point with back button focus, can you configure that asa quick button or shortcut? .... and with eye detect I assume back button focus is no longer used? - just the regular index finger on the shoot button? Thanks

  • @RobSambles

Hey David. There's a load of customisation that you can do with the buttons so I'm sure that's possible yes. With back button focus that will then be the focus button for all types of focus unless you change it back to the shutter button. For me I've only used back button for everything 100% for about 8years now.

Im curious about using focus/recompose with back button focus on the R6. I just upgraded from the 6D Mark ii and I am struggling because when I focus on this, the square still moves when I recompose, even though I think the focus is staying locked? Its hard to tell as Ive just been playing around with it and havent gotten to really shoot yet. Im planning to shoot some snowboarding and hockey this week, so hoping to better understand whats happening

  • @RobSambles

I'm not 100% what you mean but it perhaps sounds like you're holding down the bbf buttom when you recompose? So that the camera is continually refocusing. Once you've got the focus you want, let go of the buttom before recomposing the shot.

Hi Rob, It is always enjoyable when I watch your youtubbe videos. In addition to my 1Dx2's, I now also have an R5. The delivery of the adapter ring and the RF 70-200 is quite delayed. But that aside. When the opportunity arises, could you tell (me) more about your PM6 workflow in a video, howto automatically import (the selected lock button photos) your photos. thanks in advance, Jaap

U should test the canon r6 vs the Sony a9ii and see if canon has caught up to Sony in a mirrorless sports camera seems canon is always behind especially in eye af iso iso invariance dynamic range etc. I tested my canon 1dxii vs the Sony a9ii and with never shooting Sony for basketball Sony killed my 1dxii for getting the most in focus shots with the 20 FPS eye and face detection electronic shutter. Canon should have put that new 1dxiii new af scroll sensor on this camera.

Most of the photos look good with sharp names on the jersey. Problem is there is noise in the faces? Not sure what is causing this? Any other settings I might need to adjust to fix this?
