How to setup and use a graphics tablet with Photoshop - Wacom Intuos Pro

I recently purchased a new Wacom Intuos medium tablet to replace my old graphics tablet. We also got a small-sized Wacom tablet so Ashleigh (a member of our team) could learn to retouch using a tablet and pen instead of her mouse.
I show you how to correctly set up the Wacom and how I use a graphics tablet with Photoshop. Ashleigh shows you her experiences during the initial setup and how she adjusted to all the functions whilst using her graphics tablet and pen on a retouching project.

Very good on the basics. Found much here I didn't get anywhere else. I'm ready to dive in! Because you're left-handed, looking at your setup, for all us right-handed folks, is like looking in a mirror. Excellent! Only wish I had gone for the medium instead of the large...

The button on the pen I have mapped as alt and right click, it makes things like selecting a source for cloning and healing and selecting color with the brush much more convenient and less disruptive. The right click gives fast access to brush properties. The lower four buttons is mapped to shift, control, alt and space and the upper to the circular menu, touch on/off that I never use, redo and undo. I use the ring for brush size constantly, I find it much easier to use the ring than the brackets on the keyboard.

There is a lot of clear cut no nonsense straightforward content that Karl is purveying on this KZread channel. I find myself clicking on his videos whenever I come across them. Have just subscribed. Wacom had a sale this spring so picked up the medium size Intuos Pro model, but have yet to use it as I have been busy with other projects. Maybe get round to it in the next few weeks

I don't get how people don't use the buttons on the pen, they are awesome in my opinion. I use ctrl+opt custom keystroke on the lower button to quickly change my brush size and hardness. The other button i use for custom on screen controls (wheel that has my actions and keystrokes on it) On a multi screen setup i use Display toggle button on my Intuos (the only one i use) Thanks for the video its awesome

I often use buttons. "Export as" on LR and to create "merge layers" on PS..not to mention brush size that is much easier to adjust it with buttons. I think it is all about how you get used to it but "merge layers" button saves my life. All in all it is a good thing to have. One thing though, if you are left handed, as I am, the rotating wheel acts like you were right handed. It took me a while to figure out why the brush size was not working.

I bought the small tablet, like she has. I was REALLY bummed out to find out that I don't have the 4 modes for the scrolling ring button, like Karl was showing. I would have to move up to a larger size do you have this option. I would use that a lot.

Every model has 4 modes on that ring. You need to press it to get the other 3 functions. Did you read the manual? I doubt they took it out from the small. It was always there, even the older intuos 4 and 3 had those functions in the small tablet

A link to this old video just appeared again on Facebook, so on the off-chance that anyone is looking here, I have a question: I have used Wacom tablets for 20 years, but suddenly, the pen will not "grab" some buttons, such as sliders in Photoshop and Camera Raw, or the curves adjustment. It is the same for the Wacom setup panel itself-I have to tap and drag the pen repeatedly to get anything to move. What is happening here, and how do I correct this?

Took me quite a while to get it to work. Needed to show hidden files an folders so i could drop some apps in the wacom folder which are hidden. I still notice some apps do not respond. Apple really bunked down on security now :(

Thanks, but basically for what you are using it for, you do NOT need the Pro version. Like myself, The normal Intuos or cheaper tablets are just perfect and cheaper. Unless you are doing lot's of graphics or art drawings, the Pro is Over kill. I use one of the buttons set to "Option" so I can use it quickly with the stamp tool.

Great video, an£ agree about keyboard buttons Versus the buttons in tablet. Never used them. should have talked about the radial and express menus these are very useful. If she says “burning and dodging” one more time! simple fact is to do that expertly and skillfuly on skin you need a fair amount of experience and to understand what texture actually is. And painting skill. The amount of times you hear beginners talking this and “frequency separation” is nuts. When it’ll to take a few years of visual experience to understand WHY frequency separation is so fake looking.
