How to Setup a Vision Rack System (step by step)

We have two new racks!! We bought a Vision rack to use as our quarantine rack for new and rescued snakes, and we also got a Vision hatchling rack! In today's video Ted (from Custom Cages) and I show you how to setup their rack systems. At the end we show them all setup and in action with reptiles inside!
I want to send out a huge thank-you to Ted from Vision for delivering them and helping me set them up! To learn more about Vision racks and caging, go to www.customcages.com
(No, this isn't a monetized/sponsored video. We just love their caging systems!)

I just need to say that Emily basically dedicated a whole portion of the video to not only explain why the rack enclosures were so bare, but also to apologize for it and assure us that it won't stay that way. There are some big name breeders on this platform who have whole rooms (sometimes whole buildings) of snakes and hatchlings, and most of them are lucky to get a hide, let alone be on substrate that's not just a paper towel, if there's even a paper towel in the bin at all. They go on and on about how they care about their animals and their product, yet they are pulling out bin after bin that has literally nothing but a pregnant snake or hatchling in it, with no mention that the bins are temporary. This is why I am subscribed here and not to those other channels. I just want to say thank you for showing me that you care about the well being of these animals instead of just telling me you do. I am very proud to be part of the community for KZreadrs who pay such attention to the quality of life of not only their product but their breeding stock. Even the quarantined animals have hides and substrate, and leaves and sticks for stimulation, even though their homes are temporary. These videos are truly a pleasure to watch.

Hi Emily! You mentioned that the caves don’t fit in the new narrow tubs and I think adding egg carton as a hide could benefit you! And you can compost the egg carton (or recycle) when you’re done :)

I love snake and your care for them but as a person that owns pet mice I hate feeder breeding conditions. They should have more vertical space even if they are going to be fed to another animal I still believe they deserve the best conditions when they are alive. It isn't as bad with mice as long as the floor space is large enough but rats need tons of vertical space.

I just started breeding rats for feeders- as I was doing research on them I read that they should have 2 cubic feet of space per rat. I have NEVER seen feeder breeding rats kept in that much space, but I got them a critter nation cage that's more than big enough for them! It's sad that so many of them are kept in such cramped spaces! I'm also planning on getting two more females and another male so that Oberon and Andromeda don't have to be alone while Andromeda has pups.

I’m curious about the quarantine rack concept; do the bins really isolate the animals effectively enough to be a true quarantine? The only way I can see this working is if all the animals go in the rack at the same time and remain quarantined for the same period of time - otherwise, an animal who is almost ready to come out of quarantine could be contaminated with a pathogen or parasite from a neighboring bin containing a brand new animal... 🤔

  • @AlbinoAxolotl

    @AlbinoAxolotl

    4 жыл бұрын

I was wondering about that too. Those bins are open enough that anything that crawls, flies, or is airborne could easily travel from bin to bin and contaminate every animal. Though I guess if one animal was quarantined and turned out to have an issue they would treat everything in the area and probably the room. I think it’s more of a “best practices” assurance to hold each animal separately and away from the rest of the larger collection in a smaller group that could more easily be watched carefully and treated if necessary.

As the heat cables can be purchased separately, I suppose you could have a cable for each level with individual thermostats so the upper levels will compensate for any radiating heat from below.

I absolutely love this video Emily! I would love to see more equipment videos like this. Ted sounds like a great guy! I would love to see more collabs too! The videos of you and friends having a “snake/reptile” get-together or going herping are so fun too

I absolutely love snakes and other reptiles. I was wondering what a good starter snake would be? My parents had a 5ft long rock python named falcore when I was little, and he was awesome.

if you have a tiny trouble snake (like i got this year) that has you worried about the size of the holes, use a pair of cut up tights. after mine escaped through a really small slot in my hatchling tub we stretched a pair of tights over the top and clamped them down. still loads of airflow but it effectively seals up the gaps and now i can rest easy that she wont get out again.

Two questions: do you have issues with sag between levels especially with larger species? And have you recognized any increased activity related to having the feeder breeders on top? Would the smells from the rodent cage increase or induce feeding behavior in the snakes closest to it?

It's life. Even the family dog and cat eat cute little chickens and gentle sweethearted cows. The snakes can't go vegan. She did treat the mouse with respect though and it did seem to like her. (Just so you know, I own pet chickens that I love. Pets are pets. Even my chickens manage to find mice nest and eats all of them before I can stop them. Yes chickens eat rodents. Life is life.)

That is awesome!! I will have to bookmark this video for if/when I breed my bull snakes that I just got. Thanks to your lovely new ghost mutations, I fell in love with the hypo white-sided bulls. So I hunted around and eventually found 2 breeders that hatched clutches around the same time and each had 1 available white-side. One had a male, and one a female. So now I have a pair of hypo white-side bull snakes I'm going to raise up and potentially breed when they are old enough. And if/when I do, I will be coming back to this video to remember how to order and then when I get the rack, build it for babies.

When mice grow up, they are actually very hard to keep in well running groups without them getting in dangerous fights or killing each other. The group members have to be selected carefully by their character and eventually be separated for the rest of their lives if they don't get along. Responsible mice keeping requires a lot of knowledge and space.

Everyone should put a like on this video because they take such good care of their reptiles and don’t leave them in just boxes with nothing not even a paper towel like most KZreadrs. Emily puts paper towels, leaves, water dishes, and more in their baby snake bins and we can’t forget Ed he helps a lot too. Emily also helps all the snakes and helps us understand how to take care of reptiles too. She always helps her reptiles don’t forget Cheyenne. She just puts so much effort into all her animals in helping them, caring for them, feeding them, and so much more! And she also makes new enclosures for her snakes. Like she did with nearly headless nick. He will always be with us. Janet will always be with us too. It broke my heart to hear Janet and Nick passed away. 😭😭😭 I can’t even imagine how sad Emily was when that happened. R.I.P guys

I love all of your noodles. I really like how you always find a good and safe home for them no matter what. I can’t do what you do, boy I saved a snek once. It was caught in bird netting, and it was bleeding, the yellow jackets were starting to arrive, it was bad. So I got scissors and cut it free, took it inside, and with a magnifying glass, 6 hours, and a pair of fine tip tweezers, I got all the netting that had been caught underneath the poor guys scales off. I took to KZread found your channel and watched your video on how to give little feisty slippery tube dudes a bath. I gave him a bath, put him in an old modified fish tank, and watched all of your videos on murder spagurrder care. He began eating after he shed a few days later, I had gone to the store got little pinkies? The ones a size up from the really little baby ones, and after watching YET MORE OF YOUR videos, I worked him up to the correct mouse/rat size he should have and I let him go. It wasn’t as amazing as your Rex alligator rescue, but this happened a year ago and have been watching your channel ever since. Thank you for helping me save a danger noodle! If anyone has more questions, ask in the replies and I’ll try to answer them. Thanks!

An acquaintance of mine had the same problem with the thin bins. He had strong plastic cups which he colored black with some kind of non-toxic paint and then made a hole for entrance with scissors and melted pointy edges with a candle. Worked good for him, maybe works for you too. The only downside I guess is that its a lot of work for a lot of bins. He also suggested that pipes with one side closed off works great too, but the baby snakes may not feel very secure in them, as they need tight spaces.
