I am a novice sound guy just starting out with no schooling on this subject. I really enjoyed your presentation. I just purchased the PPM 1012 powered mixer. Thanks a lot!!!
this video is 3 years old and it helped me last week lol thanks!!
Fantastic video, I've been looking for a straight forward explanation of a board for a long time. Thank you.
Wow, with you AWESOME video I have understood a mixer better than ever. THANK YOU!!!
Thanks a tonne man, this is am excellent video, pack with excellent tips, keep it up man. i been doing this about 3 years now and i am still learning, every gig i do i lean something more. Great stuff man!!!!
Awesome! You really know what you are doing and can convey this wisdom and ability in a very efficient and helpful manner. Thanks very much Jim!
I found several opinions here in the net about CAT5 cable, definitely this cable is not suitable for an AUDIO SNAKE (if we intented to use it on the go, abused and stepped on). Obviously not for the band that go places. But it took me 2 weeks to troubleshoot the buzzing and humming at 12:00 vol. level. It worked perfectly fine, only, I did it for permanent setup. I run it fixed on the wall from the stage of our church to the back seat area. Not an entry level audio snake but it works. Cheap!
Really Informative and straight-forward. Great job Jim! Keep up the great work.
Very nice explanation. I knew a lot of this, but the first time I had it all tied all together for me. thanks!
Very nice, well-explained run down. Thanks! I'm sure I will watch this again.
Outstanding perfect post. To the point, clear and informative
Another great video ... Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Great video and very clear explanations. thank you!
Thanks a lot. I'm gonna use this info in my exam this Friday. :)
Thanks. Your video is very good and a testament to your knowledge and experience.
Jim, Your video is very good. I congratulate you. It is simple and smart...
That was a great video you covered everything well. I've watched heaps of videos and yours is the best, well done.
Good stuff.. Really helped me to understand some important things which could easily be missed. thanks
Thanks for the tips. Please give us more. You are a very good explainer!
Well informative video man - helped me out very much !
Great video by the way it gives me a lot of info. Thanks.
straight forward and well done. thanks so much for the lesson
Man you should put more video out on this please good work. Thank you !!!!!
Thank you for this nice tuition, I am using this Mixer in my system, one thing I need to know is "What is the FX for ?" and how to select them ? once again I gain alot of knowledge from this video.
Right on. Very educational. Well done.
Great video thank you much for the demo
Thank you for uploading this video; it was quite useful.
best video I ever See before good job men i love it is perfect for my church knoladge GOD bless you
There are so many "How to..." videos on the subject of live audio systems on youtube and most of them are pretty much useless. U wonder why people even waste their time. A lot of guys really know audio, but they are not very good instructors. This man knows the ins and outs of live audio **AND** he knows how to explain it in a way that beginners can understand. I'd like to see u go a little more in-depth on setting up the mic inputs/unity gain and pfl from soup to nuts, a 'real-world' example.
Brand new to mixing - thanks.
A must video for all beginners
That was very informative. Oddly I have the same Mackie board and the same BBE compressor and am really happy with them. Good equipment for working musicians at a reasonable cost. Love the tips on the where to run the compressor and eq. I like your style or rather lack of any pretension. A regular guy explaining things well. Bravo and thanks for taking the time to make this. I learned quite a bit. Bought a snake and was wondering if you can use them as sends for speakers as well as inputs?
nice mackie i have the 1202 but would eventually liek to upgrade in the future.
Very helpful tips.
Watch this video. Explains about speakers amps and mixers well. Basically you will need an amp somewhere in your setup, it may be built into your speakers (Powered speakers), built into your desk (powered desk) or as a stand alone amp. You will also need mics, mic stands, cables (spares as well), and maybe a couple of DIs.
Greeeeaaaat video! Thanks a lot! really useful!
Thanks for the info,Just purchased my first mixer (Mackie CR 1604 VLZ) Similiar to yours, but no built in effects. Will eventually use this equipment for live sound, but it's main use will be in my home studio.I found most of your information helpful.I am also interested in hooking this mixer up for recording in the studio ( I have 2 Alesis ADAT machines ) And an Alesis io2 digital interface wit Cubase LE software. The manual with my Mackie is a little confusing. Thanks again for the information
Great video. I learn't a lot from your video.
Very good video. Do you have any videos on more detailed use of comps/gates?
12 o'clock is fine, or even 3'oclock, as long as the gain from mixer through processing is correct. The attenuators allow you to set for desired or legal volume levels by trimming back the signal sent from the mixer/fx rack instead of the other way round(amps fully clockwise but faders &trims on mixer set very low = noisy, thin sound to both house and stage monitors).
Good Video....Very Informative
Very Informative Thankyou !
i love this mixer
Great Job!
Yah, on your channel strips near the faders, there should be a button called pfl or solo, these buttons mute the channel from the main mix and puts it in the headphones output and shows that one channel on the led meters, but that will put it out of the main mix so nothing will come out of the mains (and moniters or aux sends) - Ben G.
@6sebastiancol you want to put the eq, compressor in the main inserts so it has a constant level. the main out goes to the crossover, then to the amps. monitors go out the auxes.
As a beginner...can you do a video on how to wire the whole system together (incl crossover, amps dual eq etc)? Awesome video, easy to understand. Thanx
Great Job.
thank you very much it helped me a lot . and that is a nice vaporizer! =)
Awesome job Jim! I have the exact same board except mine is 20 channel. In fact I just graduated up from a powered mixing board and still have a lot to learn. How do you setup a subgroup for drums? This would be an awesome help for me while running sound and fighting sound issues.
The problem with signal leakage when using the panning knobs is due to the quality of the board you are using. Mid-quality and higher boards DO NOT leak signals between panning knobs. Also - if you are using sub-groups, you need to pan the channels to get the full signal!!
i do appreciate this
Awesome video, I need help with connectivity. I use 2 amps one for the Mains and 1 for the monitors I also just purchased an EQ similar to the one on your video. How do you have your system connected in this video. I really need help with this.
Great Video! What kind of case do you have for your mixer. I've got a board just like that and I'm looking for a case for traveling. Thanks.
Awesome video! I learnt a lot about running PA systems. I didnt realise you need much more than 2 FOH speakers, 2 monitors, a mixer and a power am. had no idea about running compressors, eq's and crossovers. so now im left in a world of confusion and wondering if you could help.
hey Jim great video, so is is main outs to the line eq then to the crossover then amps and speakers?, what about the auxes for the monitors?, I'm confussed in that part, thank you very much
I am totally new on this! what you need to start audio system? speakers, cables, laptop, mics, mixer, do I need an amp also ?
good stuff thank you
good job
Great vid I found it very useful. I see you have an iPod plugged in. I presume you'd want this to be play back music in stereo. Your vid is about setting up a band in mono. When I plug in an iPod or such device into a stereo jack of my mixer the output is in stereo but sounds bad/flat. It doesn't sound very good. Simple set up as were building up the PA Edirol M16-DX digital mixer > Cerwin Vega 2800 power amp > Peavey monitors. Any suggestions on getting a good sounding mp3 playback on the PA?
Hi good video, could you please show just how to set up and how to pug in for Aux 1 & 2 for a two monitor mix. Thanks
really good........thanks :)
Very helpful, I've being turning my power amps up full for years,,, I'm getting a muddy sound in my foh mix, especially my lead vocals, any ideas? using an allen & heath 16 channel mix wizard desk. I just bought a 32 band graffic. but no idea how to get a good clean & clear sound from the band, 5 piece
I'm a newbie getting ready to purchase an active system and a PreSonus 16.4.2 board.....it comes with compressors....do you have any experience with there digital boards? Awesome video!
Subbed...thanks!
Hi ! I do really like your video and i have a question. i am currently using yamaha mixer 24 channels when i record a live sound with it it doesn't catch the public sound. what would you suggest me to do?
good job.I appreciate
I have a Mackie CFX12 There are XLR main outs as well as 1/4 inch main outs whats the difference? can I use all four at once? and one more question when I use my 4 Sub Out's I get a dry mix (no Effects) Can I get a wet out? Gret Video by the way I enjoy watching videos here you allways can learn something new thanks.
Awesome video! I learnt a lot about running PA systems. I didnt realise you need much more than 2 FOH speakers, 2 monitors, a mixer and a power am. had no idea about running compressors, eq's and crossovers. so now im left in a world of confusion and wondering if you could help. Basically i have the same mixer as you do, and was wondering how to run guitar amplifiers and bass amps through the mixer for a more live sound.. please let me know a simple setuo for a small church band.. :)
You wanna run the stereo main outs on the non powered mixer to the power amp inputs on the powered mixer.
Are you plugged into a 220 box? Plug your rack gear into it mixer, rack, etc. then it goes into a 220 source from the club. Like a dryer plugs into.
I also use three amps lows, mids, and highs I'm making custom towers that's why I said I will show you in the summer
@SophicMedia Thanks!
Regarding with the mixer that you have (Mackie CFX II). I got the same mixer. One thing that I hate is the clipping of the EFX. I am usually putting the main level EFX 2 to 12 o clock position. Then same with the individual channel EFX volume. But with these settings the EFX clips and sometimes the mixer shut off. Unlike in my Yamaha MGCX I got no problem in clipping of EFX. Try to set it and observe it. If you have some idea how to avoid it will be appreciated. Thanks
it is good
I have the same board and saw that you are using left main out only for your mains. Without using the right main out how are you getting a full mono mix as it looks like all channels are straight up?
You can plug a bass guitar directly into the board if the bass guitar signal is being passed through a DI box.
Hi Jim, I recently bought the Mackie ProFx16, very similar to the one in your video. It has an USB router to connect to the computer which has Traction3 bundle DAW Software installed. However I am very new at this and recently updated to this Mackie. I just want to know how can I send input audio signal from guitars , bass etc to register in the tracks in the DAW. I don't get signal or sound from mixer. Like I said I'm new at this and have a lot to learn. Could you help me with some info. Thanxs
do u have the main compressor on the main out then to the eq or a main insert?
Great video, but I have a question. When some bands perform live, like professional bands. They have in ear monitors and I'm pretty sure what they hear is a click track in one ear and then the recorded song that they are playing in the other ear so they can keep tempo and what not. Do you have an idea how to do that with a mixing board? I have a pmp6000 and I feel like it's capable of doing this I just cant figure it out, Thanks.
Which A&H do you have? How many sub groups, stereo or mono signal to sub gruops?
hey, isnt pfl the same as muting or temporary turning down other channels while checking single one separately?? is this a way to go if u dont have pfl option??
so, does the break switch also kill the signal going to the auxes?
I'm starting to do concerts for my Rap Group how much for all of it?? And will that work for the same method as recording too??
What mixer and eq's would you suggest I buy for my home audio I'm a audiophile and will show you my setup this summer if you like I need the the things to be RCA and nothing too expensive whenever I find one that I like its xlr in puts and out I will be using this with my iphone, TV, ps3, DVD player, and so on and so fourth. Your help will be greatly appreshated
Not sure if you're still checking this for responses, but I'm curious to know why you done have compression on the snare drum, except through the main mix. Thank you.
Question - if all my settings should be at unity what volume should my keyboard be set at? Should it be at high to max volume with as little gain as possible or lower with higher gain on the board? There is no unity indication on my keyboard output volume fader. Thanks!
What I need ti know is how to use the E Mac, EFX etc. thank you in advance
are you from minnesota? you sound like you could definitely be my neighbor!
i just purchased a mackie dfx 12 which is a bit smaller than yuor but i was wondering how do you use that fx?? do i need to run the aux send back intot hereturn to be able to hear it or do i what? i tried turning the aux2 fader alllt he way up but i still dont hear the fx.. can you help
So do you insert a compressor over the whole mix?
cool
Did you side-chain your effects and processors?
Hi. Can anoyone help me. I recently acquired a 15 meters, 12 channel audio snake. It uses CAT5 UTP cable. 8 XLR and 4 Unbalance 1/4 inch jack. Everytime I plugged everything in the mixer, it produces hum and buzzing whenever I cranked the volume up to 12:00 o'clock and higher. I tried to use ground lifting AC adaptor, connect a wire to any metal to grounding source and even used a power strip with proper grounding, but the hum noise remains. Is CAT5 cable good choice for audio snake?
I need to make one, I just made three videos on more advanced topics such as gain structure and speaker placement. Check them out when you get a moment.
My question is about subgroups. Suppose I only have one microphone in my setup, and I have no subgroups. At what levels, specifically, do I put the 4 subgroup sliders at and do I depress the 1-2 and 3-4 buttons up or down? If I only want to have 2 subgroups and not 3 or 4, how do I work the 4 subgroup sliders and the 1-2 and 3-4 buttons?
correction on my question: ...curious to know why you have no compression on the snare drum, except through the main mix....
I'm using the same mixer, but never have the l & r level go up at the same time. only the level signal is showing. pls. tell me what i doing wrong or something wrong with the mixer.
I'm just getting started in sound. But I am the drummer in my band but also own the PA system. I have a 12 channel mixer, two mains passive, two non-powered monitors, and a amp. I'm only running vocals and my kick and snare now. Do I need a EQ, and compressor, and power conditioner for my setup?

Thanks for the info.
I would say, Insert the compressor into a buss send and return and send all of your audio to the buss.
