Great video, this is what many service members would use when deploying overseas rather than purchasing a global service. Most bases have free WiFi and I used my disconnected cell in this manner when deployed. Key is to set it up prior to departing the states so like the video says use an older phone you want to take on deployment, not your fancy iPhone 7, which you will probably break overseas.

This is amazing. Very easy to follow, very concise and clear. Setting up a temporary construction site phone line using your method, using a wifi hotspot (since there is no wiring and physical connections on the site) - Thanks a bunch!

it works. I used groove ip lite and a bad esn lg running gingerbread. I had tried for days how to figure out how to do this on my own and followed your video step by step and got it working in twenty minutes. Seemed like the newest google voice menus are slighly different than pictured on your video but not to hard to figure out

This worked great and so easy to set up. Now I have two phones and only pay for one.

DO NOT TRY THESE INSTRUCTIONS. THEYRE FROM 2013. this doesnt work any more. literally every one of these apps is different than what pops up in this video except a few of the first couple screens on voice. talkatone requires you to make an account with them and they give you a totally different number, so you can do this very simply now in 2 steps with just the talkatone app and no others(you dont even need to sign in with a google account). this just started Nov 1st 2016. hangouts app works totally differently now,too. they have a built in dialer so you can use that and not go through all these steps. i wish i knew before i started. if you have your settings backed-up on your device, its a real pain in the ass to go back and reset everything once you already chose not to receive calls on google voice too. you have to uninstall, reset cache, reset settings, then reinstall. make sure you only reset settings for this one app or youll have to start everything over.

I have "Hangout Dialer" instead of Talkatone. Is there a difference and a preference? It seems "Dialer" is a one stop app to receive calls, call out and text messages. I did all this on my Huawei and wondered if this same process you wrote about can be completed on an older flip trac phone? I think its a Samsung.

Could you help me with a problem, please? I have two phones: Kyocera Hydro ICON with a KitKat OS; and a Samsung Young with a Jelly Bean OS. After closely watching both of your videos, I did the thing and tried it out, however people cannot hear me via the Wi-Fi calling, either incoming or outcoming, but I can hear them both ways. Do they need to be on Wi-Fi in the same way, or connnected with mobile data in order to hear me? You no on some phones how (especially budget phones) there is no noise cancellation or somthing, then put it on speaker so hear that caller while you resume aught your doing and that person hears there own voice, but you dont notice a difference? Well... its like that, I hear my own voice when using this method of calling with the talkatone app. BTW, if it helps, - though your vid. did not mention it, - I had to add another number (one with talkatone) in order to continue registering.

So here is my thing I have no cell phone signal at home but its fine when I am in town. Is there a way to use WiFi when I'm at home and regular cell tower when I out in town? with the same number? Any help would be great! I'm sure this would help a lot of people.

Set this up using Google Voice and Hangouts Dialer on an LG Optimus Exceed 2 ($15 at Best Buy) and works very well. Can send and receive texts and MMS via Hangouts. Only problem I had so far is that I can make outgoing calls, but incoming calls never come in. Always goes right to voice mail. Guessing I set something wrong. Phone is currently not rooted, I'd like to do that soon.

I don't think Google allows apps like grooveIP with google voice anymore. Google voice is integrated into hangouts now anyway. You can get hangouts dialer from Google play. It adds a dialer into the (updated) hangouts app.

Did Google Hangouts replace this ?

I have an I phone 5 and it works with wifi and I can receive phone calls on it when it's near my I phone 6 which has cell service as does my Imac but I can't dial out on it. Will it work on the I phone and do I need talkatone or just google voice?

having an issue with my 1. lg g2 - D800 2. running on Android 7.1.2 3. using lineage OS(cynnaogenmod) 14.1 4. I have set up google voice correctly(minus the step at 6:02 "do not use Google voice to make any voice calls". however now it seems that talkatone doesn't use the same setup, and is not being able to connect with my google voice. I ended up trying to link the number talkatone generated for my phone with my google voice account but that didn't do anything. 5. TWRP recovery system(if thats what you mean)

When I pick the number I want it tells me there's an era this happens with any other number I pick .. I googled the problem and a few people had the same situation but no answer think you can help?

Using google voice only would forward the call to any number you have set up to be forwarded to. And since this is a free work around you forward it to google talk. You could have the calls forwarded to any of your phones ( home, work, etc) is the beauty of google voice but again this is for free wifi calling. Signing in to hangouts which is google talk I believe, and hangouts not having the ability to take calls on android is the reason for using the other program with the calling capability (talkatone or groove ip).

This did not work on my deactivated sprint e4gt s2. Voice could not confirm the number since no texts were allowed, then talk at one would not associate the voice number with it, so it gave me a number which was not the same. It probable does not work on CDMA phones, or maybe just Sprint crap phones.

For local calls. But you didn't address calling international landlines and cellphones!!! Can you call them for free?!?

I've found that you can mix apps to acheive this, but using the same apps and methodology simply doesn't afford the capability. For example, using Tom's method works for one number/gv/gmail acct, but you only have one GV app and one Hangouts app, so to achieve multiple numbers, something like the "Mo+" app from the Google Play store can achieve the result of mulitple VoIP DIDs on the same Android. I hope that helps :)

TRUE COLORS yes....I have my phone set up like that...I have my phone number then I have Google voice linked to my phone so I can use that number as a work number

I followed the directions perfectly but in google voice setup it shows my activated cell phone number and not the google voice number i setup. Is that how its supposed to be or did i do something wrong?

Google Voice is a separate thing from Skype. Skype to Skype is free, Google Voice is free calls in North America (US and Canada).

Yes but thats only if you have a activated phone with a data plan. A unactivated phone will not work unless you set it up this way.

Doesn't google voice require loading some credit like Skype? I recall putting money in google voice just to call overseas! It maybe free for local calls but not if u wanna call outside USA! In fact skype now charges for local calls except toll-free so I'm pretty sure google is now doing the same
