Hey great video on the 1176 very helpful! Have you ever stacked an 1176 with La2a while tracking? With the 1176 only grabbing the peaks and the the La2a for gain make up and maybe 1-2dB of reduction, I've tried this once or twice and the only downside I really noticed was the vocals becoming more sibilant

Do you often have to reset the needle of the 1176 LN to zero?

Great info! I purchased the BAE 1073 with eq mainly for lead vocals . I have my u87 going into the mic input of the bae out of the bae into a ua 1176. I can't find any tips or tutorials on youtube using the BAE 1073 EQ for recording vocals only for guitar or bass did I make the wrong choice in purchasing the BAE for recording vocals? Thanks so much...

No you did not you made the best choice … don’t look for “bae settings” look for 1073 settings in general the bae is the closest copy to the real 1073 to this day..

Can anyone explain the reason why the release time gets shorter towards the higher numbers when turning the dial to the right? It seems counter intuitive to select a higher value for a shorter release?

It is what it is. I'm working with the WAVES-Plugins versions of the 1176 and LA-2A. The manual explains that the attack/release values on the 1176 work that way, slow -> fast 1 -> 7. Just think of it as opening the compressor. At a slow setting (knobs all the way left at 1) the unit barely does anything (even it still does because the 1176 always reacts pretty fast compared to other units) and turning the knobs then to the right towards 7 it "opens" up to show you the goodies :)

Do you record with it? How much are you pushing in with your pre amp if so.

very useful information thanks, though the camera shaking and blurring gave me a seizure.

Thanks! How much dB should the preamp be going into a compressor? I don't have the comp but have one with similar settings, and get a lot of noise when input is past halfway

push your preamp output/gain more so you get a cleaner signal going into the comp. if you push the input or output of the 1176 a lot, you'll get a lot of noise

Oh come on now. You've never learned how to push into that 1176 on a vocal. With all buttons in. And with the gain reduction meter. Looking like the windshield wipers on your car. While you are driving 70 mph through a hurricane or what you call a cyclone. And so you haven't lived yet. You are being way too timid. You don't yet realize what this thing can actually do. When you push into it. I mean you don't have to believe me. I've only been doing this for 50 years. I've only made history garnering 4 major music award nominations. And 20 years with a major American television network as one of their top Audio Engineers. And Maintenance Engineers. And custom fabricator. Of stuff like custom broadcast audio consoles based upon API and Dean Jensen operational amplifiers. Which I build from scratch. And I have no college degree. I just spent a lot of time at the library. Because it's free. It's all free! You can get a college degree for free. By going to a library and reading everything you can get your hands on. In your trade and field. You don't have to have somebody you spend $30,000-$85,000. To have somebody tell you what to read. That's really stupid! You go to the librarian and ask the librarian about books regarding audio recordings and production. They've got a lot of them. It'll take you a couple of years to get through all of them. But when you do. You'll trump the college professors. Who have never done it before. That's why they teach. They don't have the talent to do it. Some have. They are out of work hit engineers. And they are not too shabby. But most are. Most are frauds. They got themselves a certificate. From someone else who knows nothing. And has a bullshit studio. I'm one of those people. That corrects those multimillion dollar control rooms and studios. Designed by the big time Acoustic Engineers and Electrical Engineers. That make stupid mistakes of their own. Because they are limited by their textbooks and mathematical formulas. And they cannot think things through. They can't think elementary things through. It's sad. It's tragically funny. I think. That so many of these experts with college degrees. Don't know shit about what they're talking about. Because I've had to design build and maintain all that stuff. For the past 50+ years. And I honestly never envisioned myself as a world authority. Until I found out I actually was. Who knew? I seem to have a unique talent. And I'll be damned if I know why? But I know why. I come from that kind of stock. Both of my parents were semi-famous world-class musician. And I get my engineering talents from my mom's side of the family. My father and his family were totally technically inept. My mother's older brothers were world-class top mechanics. And mom wasn't shabby either. Mom was technically competent without doing anything really technical. And she unknowingly gave me all of my ear training. She had been a famous opera singer of the late 1940s. My dad was a leading violinist. And he played string tracks for Motown and Stax when I was a kid growing up. That's why I'm in this business. I grew up in the studios. I grew up in the TV and radio stations. I thought I was just going to be another professional musician. I played the French horn. But I'm really a much better engineer. I'm one of my own favorite engineers. And I have a lot of favorites. You know them all. And I know them all personally. I've either spoken with them many times are I have worked with them. Simply as another engineer. Mostly maintenance. Sometimes recording. Which is really where my passion lies. I like doing the live capture and broadcast thing. I get bored in the studio easily. It can be slow moving. That doesn't work for my ADD. Go get them! RemyRAD

People that come to comment on compressor tutorial videos implying that another engineer doesn’t know what their doing with said compressor and then writes a whole essay on why we should believe them. Probably is the one with the snake oil information. You don’t need to tell us your whole life history just to justify you’re an engineer. You can comment with valuable information on 1176 compressors but instead you gave us a history on your past that we can’t claim to be factual.
