    Just wanted to add a comment in case you are still monitoring this site. I caught the gopher that had started destroying my lawn. I had to reset the traps a few times because I made some major errors that I realized afterward. I did a better job when I would reset them in the new tunnel it dug each day. Many thanks for going through the effort to make this video. I got the exact traps you recommended and they worked using the tips you gave. You probably saved me a huge bill if I would have had to call a pest control company.......THANK YOU!

    Im glad I could help. When I built my place, it was completely overrun by gophers. I spent my first year there learning how to trap gophers. I had to get really good at it. I probably trapped 50 gophers in my first year.

    I forgot to tell you that where there is one gopher, there is another. Dont be surprised if another gopher pops up digging soon. But now you have the tools and skill to deal with it. :)

    @@melissarider3819 I am keeping a close watch for sure! I think the gopher I had was by itself because no more mounds have occurred for 9 days now and there was new digging every day prior to that. I've lived here since the 70's and have only had one other occasion when a gopher dug in my yard so I don't think there are lots of them around. It's sure upsetting when they destroy your lawn though. I've got underground sprinklers and read they can do a lot of damage to the PVC pipes/sprinklers so I sure didn't want that to happen. This one dug right over one PVC pipe but luckily didn't chew it. I do feel more confident now if I have a future problem thanks to your help!!! Now I have a new dilemma though. One of my dogs who never dug before has taken a liking to digging in an attempt to find whatever was living under those dirt mounds. It looks like an archaeological dig site in my backyard.....ugh!

    Thanks Melissa. I inherited some downright medieval gopher traps, huge with spikes and such. My critters are far too curious to use these traps. I am going to give these Victor traps a try. As a point of clarity you might throw in that you stake the traps to keep Wiley coyote from making off with your dead gopher and trap.

  • @theclassifiedhorse

    @theclassifiedhorse

    I actually dont stake the traps. I tie the twine to the piece of metal pole so that the gopher doesnt drag the trap down into the tunnel. Sometimes the gophers get caught and they dont die. They will crawl down the tunnel and take the trap with them.

    Great Video, found three mounds today in my backyard. I have a mole trap, but I think these are gophers. The hole was off to the side and not in the middle, and the mounds are pretty big. I will go to the hardware store nearby and get me a two pack of these victor traps.

  • @richiemac2395
    @richiemac2395 Жыл бұрын

    You don't have to close up the hole. In fact that is part of the appeal to the gopher, which is to close it by back filling it. They want to protect the tunnel from predators and the elements. I do agree with placing the trap in as deep as possible though. To make a significant impact it is best to buy and set as many traps as you can. Just make sure that you stake them down or anchor somehow which will prevent the gopher from pack pedaling and you loosing your trap. Only set in fresh mound holes. Old holes are a waste of time.

  • @theclassifiedhorse

    That means he is smart to the traps. You have to try to outsmart him. The most important thing you can do is dig back into the original hole until you find a tunnel split. Then you can put a trap in each tunnel so that no matter which directions he comes from, he will run into a trap. Another trick that I have had work is put 2 traps in line with each other. Then if he kicks dirt in the first trap and set it off, he might climb over it and get caught by the second trap. The last think I have tried that sometimes works is to bait the trap. They like carrots. I have put a baby carrot in the trap to bait him into it. I hope one of these tricks works for you. Let me know how it goes :)

    You have large and healthy gophers. Mine are small that they fit between the strike plate and the claws.

  • @melissarider3819

    @melissarider3819

    Those are baby gophers. You can still trap them but they tend to not push on the the strike plate with enough force. Try baiting the trap with a piece of carrot to motivate the gopher to push on the carrot and set off the strike plate.

    I bought some of these traps today and within a couple hours, captured the one I saw yesterday. Unfortunately, it deployed on its rear leg and was very alive when I discovered it. Not sure what I did wrong, but I prefer not to let an animal suffer unnecessarily.

  • @theclassifiedhorse

    Sometimes that happens. Make sure when you pull a trap out of the hole, you pull it out with the twine that you tied to it. Dont stick your hand in the hole in case the gopher is still alive. It might bite you. Be prepared with a shovel to kill it if necessary. I would say that happens to me about 1 in 10 times of catching them.

    They absolutely work!!!! I have trapped over a hundred gophers with those traps. If it's snapping shut when your putting it in the tunnel, you are trying to cram it into too small of a tunnel. You need to get a hand shovel and widen the tunnel. Then when you put the trap into the tunnel apply a little pressure against the pressure plate until you get the trap in place.
