How to set up media in canister filter Eheim Classic 1500XL

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

This is how I set up my canister filter, it probably will be a similar set up for other canister filters in general. Excuse the sound quality as I decided to make the video before I put my filter back together. I did end up putting both bags of lava rock at the end.

I have two Ehime 1500XL on my 200 gallon Angelfish/Rainbowfish tank. A few suggestions I have would be to not use the fine polyester filter floss since you are already using purigen in the canister, and you have a course and medium sponges at the bottom. This will allow you to not have to clean this filter as often, especially because you are using a really good bio media in Biohome Ultimate. I think the lava rock isn't adding much and just taking uo space and weight. Just pack more Biohome in there. I run an Aqua Clear 110 HOB on all my tanks. That's were I place the fine polyester floss and the purigen. It's easy to monitor how dirty the floss and purigen are so I can replace without opening my canister. Thanks for the video!

Biohome has the same low performance as lava rock as biological media.

This is exactly what I do. 2262 and AC110. Utilize the AC110 for mechanical with the filter floss to reduce opening the canister and frequency of changes.

Those sponge filters from Amazon are the greatest for the money. I bought mine from the original seller's website for less than Amazon. Also, the placement order of those sponges are as follows: blue/coarse, black/medium, & green/fine. Some Amazon reviewers state that the blue and black sponges are the same porosity, but I disagree. I've used those sponges in all my HOBs, & they will probably outlast all my pets😉 . I'm waiting for the day when I can finally order and set up my very own 1500XL. Right now, my largest tank is a 45yr old 55 gallon which is filtering off of 2x Seachem Tidal 110s. Your specific set up is closer to what I'd do with mine...without the lava rock.

Well explained good filter. A little advice though Purigen is only good for initial setups as the bacteria load in a canister filter will be starved and never thrive. I only use Purigen in a small seperate filter in heavily stocked tanks until the bacteria load has built up in the main filter. Another tip would be to add some bio pellets with the Biohome to add a cardon food for the bacteria. Lava rock is not that good as a bio media. I would recommend Growstones or a pumice like Matrix much better surface area and nitrate reduction. Be careful though unless you are keeping hard water species some pumice will leach KH. Matrix is inert. Growstones will release a little silica so great for algea growth in Malawi/Tanganika setups.

I should have mentioned that you can actually put a bag of noodles in the bottom surrounded by a few loose pieces. Easier cleaning and a lot more media for that space. To make the suction easier on restarts. Just use a piece of tube about a metre or less. Put into the outlet and suck.

As general rule you should have one small sponge filter per 48 shovel nose catfish, an eheim xl is over kill unless you keep sea monkeys in a small jar, then it's 1 eheim 1500xl per 2 sea monkeys aka brine shrimp. (Note. DO NOT take a single thing I say seriously, except this statement inside the brackets of course)

I filled mine with 150 pot scrubbers. Finally got crystal clear water in my overstocked 100gal African cichlid tank. Matrix, lava rock, ceramic rings are expensive trash and I've been using them for years like an idiot because I was following other missinformed people.

old video, but if you are watching this the top grate goes in legs up. this creates a dead space for complete water circulation. that is also why you should really fill the bottom void below the bottom grate either

Totally wrong, you're media should go, as the water flows; 1 very fine micron pad to block up instantly 2 very smooth substrate with nearly no surface area at all 3 something that dissolves in water making it poison to fish 4 and finally one super course but light stone to try and damage the impeller and make it noisy as hell. Simple
