How to Set Up Maps and Encrypted Comms in ATAK

Ғылым және технология

ATAK is one of the most powerfully complicated mapping and communication tools ever made. In the past it has been hard to obtain, hard to install, and hard to configure, as described in this video: • Move, Shoot, and Commu...
Today, however, it is available on the Play Store, there are numerous plugins and map sources to add, and we will walk you through getting started.

I had a hard time getting mechtastic to work right with atak. They show connected however no messages. Hammer worked ok just sometimes it misses messages, also it conflicts with VNS when it's loaded. The best system I found is a wifi router and a tak server running on a pi or computer. You can use a travel router or a Alfa adapter. Only issue is you can be tracked ez, if your trying to run something for shtf I'd skip this.

South African here. Our community policing is coming together. ATAK has been mentioned as a possible co-ordination tool. Our last operation involved a raid with local police on a location that was fairly large. We did used google maps to identify possible escape routes and we split to cover but our control of assets was very loose. While we did make 18 successful arrests we also lost some of the fast movers due to limited communication with the drone operators and the very basic nature of our strategy. Due to our cell networks being very unreliable and cover limited, if we use this tool we will need mesh networking. We may also need tiers of op data where mission command has an uncluttered overview of our groups while each group has more detailed information of their sectors. Finally, radio comms integration, possibly tiered again where group leaders have better comms with command and the drones and their groups are able to communicate amongst themselves without interference. The groups being able to see every member as well as other groups leaders location or better yet able to toggle the amount of friendly units one is looking at might be helpful if that is an option. Thanks.

One of the things I have considered using ATAK for was replacing the use of Garmin Rino’s for things such as ATV’ing and Bear Hunting. We use Garmin Rino’s to make sure we can keep locations of other people in our party (especially for bear hunting in PA) as we try to drive through brush to make sure we are driving the bear in the right direction while also knowing where the other part of the party that’s posted is (for obvious safety reasons). We’ve found the Rino’s too to be helpful for locating other people in our group while ATV’ing as well to ensure we can stay connected and know where other ATV’s are in the group. The issue we have with the Rino’s is that they are pretty clunky to use, go out of sync all the time, And they are often fairly expensive to buy while also having limited capabilities as GPS’s and Radios outside of the “connected location monitoring use”.Where we’ve considered using ATAK as a replacement. Our big concern though is that we often don’t have cell service, so we’d like to figure out ways to plug in ATAK with radios (DMR’s, GMrS, or HAM) or mesh networks to be able to communicate off grid.

Didnt even know the labs channel existed. I have been looking at ATAK stuff over last few days, S2 underground is a great resource too. I have played with ATAK thinking about usecases: my family is going to a festival, how can we keep tabs on where the kids are, where the tent is pitched, the car parked etc. Next, its a field how can we communicate if no mobile data? (Meshtastic for example). Another use case was for replacing life360, to keep an eye on family and when they arrive at school, worl, home etc. I think having a use case and then walk through and/or homework would be great to help us learn how to use. Next I want to learn how to add camera feeds from static and drone cameras, like US forest fire service somewhere - that way I can set up a nice command portal to keep tabs on HQ(home), my CO(wife) and SpecOps(Kids). Keep up the great work Trex arms, labs and everything else

For me I would love to see offline communications through mesh radio networks. At distances or situations where you can't have network access but only able to send data through radios, more secure the better, and if possible able to connect with cheaper radios like the UV-5R for the friend who didn't prepare with more expensive radio setups, and allows for mass additions to new members if needed.

What I would love to see is an overview of examples of how to use ATAK in a squad. For example: -If you're using it to gather intel of an enemy emplacement, what does that look like? Can it involve the integration of other devices actively gathering data for you, like live-video feed from a drone of a specific area (like a CoD UAV or a Ghost Recon spotting drone, kind of)? Can it be used with other devices to triangulate locations of radio transmissions or the like? -How to use ATAK to set traps for unsuspecting patrols. Can you connect motion-sensors and trigger devices remotely from ATAK itself? -Is it possible to feed radio or other comms through ATAK to consolidate squad comms through a single source? These are just a few things that I would love to see because I haven't found them anywhere else. Everyone talks about the basics of it and navigating the UI, but nobody does a great job of expanding on the cool possibilities or giving alternative selling points to just the squad communication and navigation aspects of it. Thanks in advance! Loved this video for how simply it showed what the rest of the internet makes overly complicated in just what ATAK could be and how to get it useable, lol.

I'm working humanitarian aid and evacuation missions on front lines. Cell reception is very rare, GPS available up to 100-500m to the zero-line. No internet available at all (without Starlink). We work in a number of crews with a number of vehicles, spread up 1-3km at times. Radio comms work ok on 2m bands, 70cm is a no-go. We usually are unfamiliar with the terrain, memorize paper maps as good as possible (google maps rarely works). We need a system where we can check up on each other's positions, paint routes, mark dead zones / no-go zones, mark evacuated buildings / zones, ect. ATAK seems to be the perfect solution, but since no cell / network is available, we must rely on 2m radios to share the information across the devices. A tutorial / how-to about analog / digital radio integration for ATAK would be very helpful. Thanks a bunch.

Multiple digital data types are allowed including F2D telemetry(GPS) and F2B teletype(messaging). Encryption and F2C(images) aren't allowed but it could still open the door to some aspiring plugin developer. There are plenty of inexpensive MURS radios with the common Kenwood K1 plugs that will readily accept a cheap Bluetooth TNC.

The Achilles Heal is the data connection. While cellphones are great at sending and receiving text, pictures and such, how about a video about VHF Packet Radio? Maybe even a video about SSTV and FSTV for sending images? I've been playing around with APRS for while and it can come in handy. Haven't tried SSTV or FSTV on the air yet, just sending a picture to my IC-705 from my ID-52 (no longer have the ID-52) via the Icom RSM1A app. Could even go farther down the rabbit hole about crossband operation. The downside to what I've mentioned is one has to have an Amateur Radio License to use the amateur frequencies. Not sure if it can be done on the MURS, FRS or even GMRS frequency spectrums.

You can do SSTV on Murs, FRS, or , gmrs. Just may not be within the FCC's rulings. They have androids apps for this. I don't think setting up a packet radio network is beginner friendly I could be wrong. I do like the idea of a video on it, this channel does a great job at explaining things.

@ashaphter9738 There are some SSTV apps, but the phone has to be close to the radio. Packet and data burst are harder to track down by RF direction finding techniques. For voice communication, digital modulation is the way to go. Radios that are capable of that are a bit pricey. The problem with that is not all can "talk" to each other without causing interference. All digital radios must have the same digital voice modulation.

  • @ashaphter9738

    @ashaphter9738

@@pale_2111 I've used a wired setup for SSTV and android which worked fine. The problem is how long the transmission takes. Burst are better yes harder to find you. Digital or not if your talking non stop it wouldn't matter if someone can understand the Convo or not, you will be ezer to find.

Im gonna put a wild suggestion out there but if you have a designated bug out vehicle there is nothing stopping you from using ATAK on an aftermarket android radio unit. Not an "Android auto" radio, you want one running actual android as the operating system for the radio. I have one installed in my daily and use it for OBD2 reading w/ the Torque app, I use the JBV1 app for radar detecter integration and speed trap alerts, I could even watch youtube videos on it. ATAK could be a great addition for hands-free bug out navigation

Since the T.Rex team probably can afford some expensive communication products, it would be awesome and very useful to see some content about off-grid solutions for ATAK, that goes in between Meshtastic and Wave Relay. Beartooth would be super interesting to begin, then maybe GoTenna Pro. Something that would get the average Joe to level up his capacity to communicate in less permissive environments without dreaming about MPU5s he probably can't afford.

I would definitely like to see a video on how to set up your own server in ATAK and how to connect personal communications equipment to it and ground based GPS so that you don't have to rely on space satellite networks in your local area for real time positioning information. To answer the question asked at the end of the video: The end use case here is organize a private local militia that fellow neighbors can join in times of crisis and to also set up security teams that patrol areas. Obviously that involves mesh networking(something like Meshtastic but that can be internalized for security purposes) and advanced communications systems, drones, cameras, analog/fiber systems separate from ISPs and government intervention, etc.

@Issac: ATAK-Brainstorming: Control a couple of drones, which could act as signal-repeaters for each other. Controlling drones behind a big hill, inside of a big "concrete bunker" building etc. where a single drone could not go because of missing signal strenght. Channel-Brainstorming: Make an old school email newsletter to which people can subscribe to. For every new video an email goes out (yes, extra work, but not much), so people get informed about it. So you can reach your existing audience even if youtube doesn't show you on people's startpages. (And it's a backup plan in case youtube shuts down all of your channels from one day to the next). IMPORTANT: It should be a specific newsletter for video-notifcation only, with no additional product-advertising and no black friday bullshit and things like that. Keep it clean.

Thanks for continuing to put out info on this … my essential needs from atak and what I’ve “mostly” figured out but would really appreciate is essentially grid down communications with basic data shared and viewable over atak via radio (analog/ and LoRa ) I want to be able to give my family members an android and radio and be able to get their location and communicate with them in grid down scenarios ( and what system would facilitate that best using something like atak )
