Love it, that is a beefy reel! I went yellow braid and had THE HARDEST time seeing it in the setting sun light while fishing the east coast of FL.

The same principles apply to a spinning reel? I have a Daiwa BG that's setup Braid with mono leader, but you just blew my mind with this video.

Braid is your shock leader? I think you have the concept a lil backwards.Braid doesn't have any stretch so how does it act as a shock leader? I was always told/taught the shock leader is mono and is the last bit of line to go on your reel and is there to stretch some when you cast and a fish is in close and takes off to smooth out the sudden shock to the hook, line, rod, reel, etc. With braid you run a big rish of pulling a hook, straightening it,or snapping the line. I spool all my reels (fresh and salt) with braid. In the surf I have #20-30 braid main, then I'll use about 3-4 or 5 rod lengths of mono either #20-30 up to #50 if the toothy fish are biting and that's my shock leader.I rig my shark rods about the same, braid, about 20-40' mono, and a steelie. I use Hercules Braid and being so cheap I just fill the whole spool with it,plus #20-30 is about the same dia as #8-10 mono.I have had the same braid on them that I spooled up 6-7 yrs ago as it doesn't breakdown, not like mono or fluro does, and all I do is replace the leader when needed.

Nice vid chip! You still need to teach me how to cast these things we have 3 now. I was casting about 100 yards the other day at the soccer field with the brakes all the way down. Need to improve my form. Keep crankin content brother good stuff.

Since mono has some memory why are you sideloading the reel. Now you have a built in curvature to the mono when it's not put on the same direction it's on the Spool.

Seems like everyone does shock leaders differently, or some don’t do them at all. So I’m curious, why the braid shock leader? I thought mono shock leader was the way to go because it stretches on the cast and helps preserve the sinker better?

Why exactly in your opinion can you not just do straight braid to a mono/fluoro leader rather then needing a shock leader?

I use 30lb. braid w/ 30lb. Mono shock leader and it goes well over 100 yards plus … No problem..! I also use a 12’ heaver w/ 65lb. Braid w/ 50lb. Mono shock leader and I get over 150 yards every time…all w/ conventional reels…it all depends on how hard you’re willing whip it…!

Is your knot going through the eyes of the rod on the cast? If so, what knot do you prefer? Or do you tie on a long enough shock leader so that doesn’t happen?

I guess the same question can be said why not. I like fishing with a conventional reel and not a spinning reel.
