As we all learn to adjust in a world where working from home is the new normal, we thought it a good time to revisit how you can get a reliable, simple remote desktop setup up and running. This will work on any device you have across the board, so you don't really have to worry much with compatibility. Getting the whole thing working is quite simple and the end result is the ability to quite seamlessly connect to the host computer with little lag and full control over the device.

    Another useful addition for those that want to access their PC e.g. when away on holiday, is that you can add a scheduled task on windows to wake your PC up at a fixed time. If you create a scheduled task, check the "wake the computer to run this task" on the conditions tab. You can then put your pc to sleep (not shutdown!) and set it to wake up for example at some fixed time(s) daily & continue to access it remotely. You then do not have to leave it on for long periods when it is not being used.

    There is a software that can "wake up" the machine when it is turned off. However , this works on VPro machines. Great for Techinicians.

    this is the best demo I found on youtube. i was getting frustrated with it, but this was super clear. I could use a laptop to remote to my mac no problem. However, I then tried to use my Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 to do it too. It worked with the keyboard - HOWEVER, you cant use the tablet mouse to move the mouse on the remote computer. If I got that to work, I would be super happy. If anyone has a solution to this, I hope you can reply here. Great job on the video - you have a new subscriber!

    The other thing, that you left out, that is awesome about chrome remote desktop is that it survives reboots, thus if the computer updates - non-issue as you remote in then you will log into the computer like you are at work. It is so great. I bought a $169 chromebook from Walmart, 15" screen, only 2GB ram and 16GB hd. Some might baulk that those specs, but I use it over a remote connection, thus all I need it for is display and a keyboard. All the power is coming from my old PC that is hiding behind a bookcase. I remote is and use Visual Studio Code just like I am sitting right there. Turned based games work well too. Pretty much if you are not streaming video or video games, even a slow connection is good enough.

    Thanks for sharing your experience! Could you please share your experience about the data usage? Did you monitored that? I basically want to use this technique when I go sometimes out of the city and I only have my laptop with me and my workstation desktop PC is at home office. I want to use photo editing and video editing softwares (Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Premiere Pro) remotely in case I would need to use them when I am out, but I am not sure how much data it would require to run these heavy softwares remotely. Also, can we share files between our remote desktop and our system on which we are accessing it remotely?

    Guys great video once again. Very on point, I'm slowly upgrading my home work space in my kitchen! Anyway, I've got the hp Chromebook x360, I've picked up 2 monitors... I've managed to get them up and going and both working via my a UCB c hub. Anyhow I'm struggling... I'm not sure how to set it up properly, I mirror to the monitors, but whatever is on my chromebook goes to both monitors... I was hoping that I could use one as my main display and the other to move stuff to... For my work I use VDi and log into windows 7 which is great. If I could just figure out these monitors it'll make the whole working from home so much easier .. any ideas? Hope I'm making my clear what I'm meaning. 👍

    I'm assuming that the remote computer you're connecting to has to have a regular connection right to the Internet. So corporate environments where the office network is behind a firewall won't work ? (e.g. we don't allow connection initiated FROM the Internet to any of our PCs "inside" the corporate network, except for very specific ones - like from our VPN concentrator)

    To me this is the real issue. I have used Windows RDC for years to remote in to various company workstations 200 miles away. I must go into their network through a VPN client the company supplies, and then I can log in to any workstation that the network administrator has granted remote login privilege. I do all programming and support using this method. If I switch to a Chromebook from a PC, I will need more information about how to set this up.

    What happens if your Mac turns off, reboot the file you started with?

    Can't let the Mac shut down, rebooting is fine because it will "start up" again. To keep the Mac from shutting down due to a power surge, plug the Mac into a battery backup to keep it running even with a short power outage.

    Can I turn off my PC by this tool?

  • @lindapogor
    @lindapogor11 ай бұрын

    Well, there was something I didn't know. If it shuts down etc then the 'connection' is lost. I thought I had it set up on an old Chromebook I left for my 91 yrs old mother. (see, there IS a reason to be able to remote in) Now that she's forgotten how to do anything (due to lack of use) I'd like to remote in and show her how again. But now I have to figure out if I can lead her to the screen to set up the session again. It may have to wait until I'm physically with her with both machines. Unless I can sign in on mine from home while she's on hers....would she see what I'm doing?

    Most companies require you to connect to the terminal server PC rather than your own PC at work, so Chrome Remote isn't appropriate. Microsoft RDP app on Chromebook also doesn't work well enough, and you can feel the lag. Best to use a Windows PC for this.

    @@andrewjardine3924 thanks! I would be more than happy to move over to a Chromebook from Windows, but in an emergency like we are now and in need to work remotely, most (if not all employers) run Windows. Think I'll try converting an old PC to Chrome OS to test. 👍

    Get a portable monitor with usb c as long as the tablet supports it or you have an adapter. I have one with a 15 foot usb c cable ran to a music workstation. Works great.

    Great job....in the past I have used "Anydesk" and "Teamviewer" but eventually I needed to pay for them and I didn't like that. Chrome seems to do as good as or a better job of remote access and it is very easy to configure. Now I can get remote access on both of my laptops from my desktop!
