Great tutorial - thank you Tom!! I would like you to show us - in the same way, slowly, no bla-bla and directly to the menu-explanation! It would be super if you could show us how to program all the Fn-buttons 1-n - especially by subject, such as: Sports e.g. ski races (slalom), Football e.g. standing outside aside the goal near corner with 300-300mm lenses, Macro (insects, flowers and other small stuff), birds, street photography, portraits with flash (Nikon 5000), the famous dog - running like mad against you while you are shooting with cont.focusing and w. 20 p/sec... etc. Each subject I would like to program on just one Fn-button. Possible? Thank you Tom - looking forward!!! Best regards from Switzerland! Rolf

Thanks for this well explained BBF on the Z9. Can you explain how your focus point colour in AF-C turns green when you subject is in focus, this normally happens in AF-S for Nikon. Mine remains yellow, or do i need to change a setting? Any thanks.

I have my front button assigned to Wide-area (actually I change it regularly) and the back button to 3d exclusively. Seems to work fine, when I get a subject in the rectangle and then press the back button the 3d will stay with the subject out of the box, so to speak. BUT, does the back button "step on" the front? Or, does it go with which one I press first? Out of the two, which is well and truly the boss? Haha...little lost here...

Thanks for the question. I just set mine up like yours and it was definitely prioritizing whichever button was pressed first. I’m currently sitting in my backyard testing different settings as I type this. I’ll let you know if I come up with anything revolutionary. Lol! Thanks for watching!

I just upgraded from my D4s to the Z9. Yes this is quite a leap. I am trying to get used to the back button focus. It is driving me crazy though. If I have the 3d focus set to People. Does the back button focus override the 3d focus. Any tips for getting used to this focusing technique?

  • @TomReplogle

Hi Cindy, thanks for watching! There's really no shortcut to getting used to this focusing technique except to shoot a bunch using the back button. I don't remember it taking very long for me before it was second nature. As far as 3D tracking set to people AF, as long as you're holding down the back button it will track and focus, once you lift off your thumb it will no longer focus. Think of the back button like a half-press of the shutter.

NIce for forcing back button focus only. But what I prefer in sports, is to press the AF-ON to lock into a location until shot then revert to Auto Focus. Is that possible with the Z9? Summary: Camera is on auto-focus all the time. Zoom/lock in focus on a jump using AF-ON, then get the shot, camera goes back to auto-focus...

I "think" you can assign that function to one of your lens buttons....not 100% sure on that as I don't use that technique. If you have a Z lens with function button(s) on it, goto Custom Settings Menu, then "f Controls", then "f2 Custom Controls (shooting)". Once there, scroll down until you see the area for programming the lens function buttons. There are 3 options there that I believe will get you close to what you want to do: 1. Preset Focus Point 2. Save Focus Point and/or 3. Recall Focus Point. I've never had the need to set my camera up like this but check it out and let me know what you find out! Thanks for watching!

So I just confirmed on my z70-200 that it does work. I mapped "Save Focus Position" to L-FN and "Recall Focus Position" to L-Fn2 and it works great. This would allow you to focus on a jump, press and hold L-Fn until the little "focus" icon appears and then press L-Fn again to save the focus position. Autofocus works in the meantime and when you need to focus back on the jump just press L-Fn2 and your focus will snap right back to where it was programmed. I may use this for my Moto-x work. Thanks for brining it to my attention!

Nope. Works just fine for me. Also, I had a D500 and had BB focus set up on it and seem to remember being able to still focus in Live View.
